The newsletter of Holy Comforter Episcopal Church Fall 2018 Comfortable Words Sunday lunch to continue The luncheons at Holy Comforter on Sundays after the 10:30 Mass will continue. LaFaye Grimes, the former manager of Wildflower Cafe, is our cook. The cost is $7 for adults and $2 for children. Lunch is free for all visitors! We are paying LaFaye to shop for the groceries, cook, serve and clean afterwards. She is a great cook! Vestry votes to buy property The Vestry voted to purchase the house located at 216 E. Peach Street, and the purchase has been completed. This was formerly the home of Eric Smith. One of our parishioners, Eloise Lostak, was also reared in that house by her parents, the Davis Family.

Wednesday Bible study starts back Choir rehearsal begins Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 7 P.M. following the 6 P.M. dinner. There are many good voices in the congregation, and we would treasure your presence among us. The Chancel Choir functions much like a small group within the Church. It is not an onerous task, but rather an enjoyable hour of singing. We serve primarily to lead the congregation in their singing by rehearsing the hymns for the upcoming Sunday and working ahead on an anthem. Try it! You will like it! On Wednesday evening, Sept. 12, our study of the Book of Acts will resume. Dinner will be at 6 PM, followed by the study at 6:30 PM. Text message reminders If anyone is not receiving church texts and would like to do so, please contact Sciobhan Short at snshort80@gmail.com

Study of Acts set to begin on Wednesday nights The Book of Acts that will be our focus for study on Wednesday nights beginning Sept.12. In time past, it was known as the Acts of the Apostles which is not a bad title, but it could also be known as the Acts of the Holy Spirit. This is because the aim of the author the friend and companion of Paul - in writing Acts emerges firstly in the manner in which the Holy Spirit was given on the Day of Pentecost, and secondly that the subsequent work of the Apostles was due entirely to the agency of the Spirit. By unanimous consent, the early Church identified Luke the beloved physician as the author, viewing the work as a sequel to the Gospel of Luke. Catholic theologian Justo L. González has written a work entitled The Gospel of the Spirit. Acts, however, is neither a Gospel, nor an Epistle, nor an Apocalypse. On the contrary, it is a narrative in the tradition of Exodus or I and II Chronicles. In Acts, Luke first writes of the early history of the Christian Church particularly the history of the Church in Jerusalem and then the spread of the Church Catholic throughout Judea, Samaria and the surrounding country. Next, he addressed the life and ministry of Saint Paul as he toured the known ancient world proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The end of the book records the years of imprisonment of Paul. Through the lens of Luke the companion and friend of Paul - in Acts we perceive how the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church evolved as the Apostles simply proclaimed the life, passion, death, resurrection and ascension of our Lord Christ. As a consequence, thousands embraced the truth of the Gospel and openly professed it in spite of the imminent peril of having done so menaced by their Hebrew brothers and sisters as well as pagans devoted to emperor worship and other gods. The tremendous change in lives was the result not of force or of persuasive eloquence, but by the self-authenticating truth of the Gospel attested to the heart by the Holy Spirit. Fr. Preston HCES seeking benefactors for student Holy Comforter Episcopal School has received a request for financial assistance for a student, for whom tuition will still be difficult, even after the school offers tuition discounts. If you are interested in sponsoring this or other students at HCES, please contact Sciobhan Short at snshort80@gmail.com or by calling the church/school office.

Smiths make a mark on London church and its priest Fr. Travis and Suzanne Smith were featured in the newsletter of St. James Church, Islington, after visiting there during their recent trip to London, England. The couple chose to worship there during Evening Prayer on a Thursday night after touring the nearby stadium of Fr. Travis favorite British soccer team, Arsenal. The priest was stunned that two Americans would walk to his church for prayer services. So stunned, he wanted his congregation to know! Suzanne said. We later shared that we are total church nerds, and it was a joy for us to do it. The priest, Fr. John Burniston, wrote in the newsletter: One of my favourite Old Testament stories records when Abraham entertained angels without knowing it. On Thursday of last week, two visitors showed up for Evening Prayer. They had walked from the Emirates Stadium, and we were the only Church saying prayers locally that night. We soon discovered that Travis Smith is already a priest in the Diocese of Texas, and his wife, Suzanne, will be ordained deacon there next Saturday (June 23). They had left their three children behind for a two-week pre-ordination vacation and ended up on our doorstep! So in this ordination season, we have a special name to remember and perhaps a new relationship with the Church in the US, too. We assure them of our prayers and thank them for reminding us that you never know what blessings come from God when you are just doing the usual!

Some JDOK from Florida did liturgical dancing, which was a beautiful addition to the services.
