Baton Rouge, LA Phone (225) Fax (225) August 18-19, 2018 Volume XXXIII No th Sunday in Ordinary Time Time Change - Thursday Daily Mass With the opening of the new school year, we will change our Thursday daily Mass time to 8:15 a.m. Beginning Thursday, August 23rd daily Masses on Thursdays will begin at 8:15 a.m. to accommodate the MBS school children. All are invited to attend Mass, seating is available. SUNDAY READINGS First Reading Wisdom has built her house; she has dressed her meat, mixed her wine, yes, she has spread her table (Proverbs 9:1-6). Psalm Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34). Second Reading Be filled with the Spirit, giving thanks always and for everything (Ephesians 5:15-20). Gospel I am the living bread that came down from heaven (John 6:51-58). THIS EUCHARISTIC FEAST Some things about human nature don t change, even over the course of centuries. When we celebrate a holiday, we have a meal; when we celebrate a significant event, we have a feast. In today s first reading, Lady Wisdom is setting a feast, a sign of celebrating the covenant that Israel has with God. Israel s central remembrance of its saving Exodus covenant is the Passover meal. So it is natural and not coincidental that the Christian celebration of the new covenant sealed by the blood of Christ on the cross happens at a meal, our Eucharist, offered first by Jesus in the context of Passover remembrance. It is easy for us, sometimes, to forget the very long and rich religious and human origins of our eucharistic feasting on the bread and cup that are the Body and Blood of Jesus. Today, and for the next few Sundays that we hear the Bread of Life discourse from John, let us bring to mind the loving covenant that God makes with us, and be filled with great joy at this marvelous feast that we have come to attend! Early Learning Center Class Openings - 3 & 4 year olds MBS Kindergarten Picnic When: Sunday, August 19th 12:30 p.m. (after 11:30 mass) - 3 p.m. For Whom: All MBS kindergarteners, parents, & teachers Where: St John Room MBS church The Early Learning Center operates from September through mid-may and the daily hours are 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. This is a mother s day out educational learning program. Three year olds attend three days a week and four year olds attend daily (Monday-Friday). Children must be of age by September 30th of this calendar year to enroll in the program. Church 7:00 p.m. Corn hole games for adults and inflatables for the kids Come meet other parents and enjoy Sausage Po Boys and grilled boudin Sponsored by MBS Church, Conquest Boys Club, and Challenge Girls Club Praise and Worship music will be provided by our MBS house band. Adoration will begin at 7:00 p.m. and end with Benediction (a blessing with the Blessed Sacrament). All ages are welcome and we invite families to come together for this wonderful hour of prayer. Deacon Bill Holtman I am sure many of you remember Deacon Bill Holtman. Deacon Bill passed away on August 4th at the age of 75 after a lengthy illness with Alzheimer s Disease. He was a deacon in our parish for 29 years. Deacon Bill served under Fr. Jerry Young, Fr. Mike Collins, and Fr. Phil Spano. Deacon Bill served our community in many capacities. He was the RCIA Director for many years, he worked with St. Vincent de Paul, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and assisted at many masses as a Deacon assigned here at M.B.S. Deacon Bill baptized many of our children and was an example of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. He had retired from active ministry in 2014 because of his illness. He will be remembered for his love of M.B.S., the many people he assisted over the years, the love for his family, and a very kind and loving person who was always willing to help anyone in need of assistance. Our prayers go out to his wife, Sandy, his son, Billie, Jr., and his daughter Tammy. Children s Rite of Christian Initiation Do you have a child who is over the age of SEVEN who has not been baptized? Or Do you have a child who is above THIRD GRADE who is baptized but has not made First Communion? MBS has a special program for children in these circumstances. If you are interested in getting your child prepared for the Sacraments, please contact the Office of Christian Formation for information about our Children s Catechumenate (RCIC) process. A parent meeting is scheduled in early September and we want to include your child in this program. The number is (225)

3 September 23rd - Outdoor Mass & Parish Picnic We will gather for the 11:30 a.m. Mass outdoors in front of the parish office building followed by a picnic. October 26th-28th Pelican Fair We will have games, rides, live bands, and great food! November 18th Thanksgiving Meal We will gather in thanksgiving as a parish family in the school gym at 5:30 p.m. M.B.S. Invites All High School Students to MP3 Most Blessed Sacrament will be hosting the first MP3 of the new school year on Saturday, August 25th. For those who don t know about MP3 (Music, Pray, Play, & Praise), it is an awesome experience put on by the St. Michael High School Campus Ministry Team that is open to all high school students. The evening is filled with games, live music, pizza, and adoration! The cost to attend this event is $10 (pay at the door) and the first 50 to register get a free T-Shirt! The event will begin at 5:45 p.m. and end at 9:00 p.m. We will begin in the MBS Gym and end in the MBS Church. MBS Knights of Columbus recently loaded up all the supplies for the seminarians and were ready to deliver! Thank you to everyone who donated items throughout July!
