5 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. We are the people who walked in darkness After our baptism, we were presented with a candle representing the light of Christ. One of the greatest gifts I ve had in life is to be able to witness people coming closer to Christ through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, and even more special is the occasional adult who has yet to be baptized. For most of us, we were baptized as infants and so did not have to put any study or effort into our conversion into a life of grace in Christ. When an adult comes to that point of conversion however, there is something supremely special about the baptism. There has been much study, and even anguish, in many instances, has gone into the decision to become a baptized Catholic Christian. These people know they have walked in darkness and can testify to the light that shines out from the Catholic Church. Some of these adult converts have commented that upon entering the church, they have been able to sense an almost palpable presence. Think about that; with the exception of Good Friday, the Real Presence of Jesus Christ is present in the tabernacle on the high altar and in the Cenacle Chapel as well. And what of us? What do we say, or what do we think when presented with the thought of the Light of Christ in our own lives? In the letter to the Corinthians, Saint Paul urges all of the Christian community there to be of one mind and purpose; in agreement in all that they say, and have no divisions among them. It should be the same for us. The goal in life for each of us must be to become saints in heaven after this life on earth has come to its end. If we are to achieve that end, then it necessarily follows that we must also be of one mind and purpose, and in agreement in what we say about our faith. There is a term, Cafeteria Catholic that refers to those Catholics who pick and choose which of the Church s teachings they will follow. We must not be of the Cafeteria variety. If we are at odds with certain Church teachings, the onus is on us (no pun intended) to do the necessary work to understand what is in our makeup that causes us to disagree. If we believe in the promises of Jesus Christ, then it also follows that it is our understanding that is wrong, not the Church s teachings or doctrines. Jesus promised to send his Holy Spirit to teach and remind us of everything he (Jesus) said and taught (see John 14). The Holy Spirit lives in the Church, and likewise, when we are in good standing and living in grace, the Holy Spirit lives in us as well. In his second letter to the Corinthians, Paul emphasizes the Spirit living in us and says, You are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by all, shown to be a letter of Christ administered by us, written not in ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets that are hearts of flesh. Such confidence we have through Christ toward God. Not that of ourselves we are qualified to take credit for anything as coming from us; rather, our qualification comes from God, who has indeed qualified us as ministers of a new covenant, not of letter but of spirit; for the letter brings death, but the Spirit gives life (2 Cor. 3:2-6). Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men In the Gospel, as Jesus begins to gather his disciples, he tells them Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. These new disciples immediately drop what they are doing and follow Jesus. Why do you suppose they were so easily predisposed to follow him? Did they see his light? I can tell you they were of one mind and purpose when Jesus came along. They were looking forward to the coming Messiah. As we should also. They had Jesus as their Teacher and Master in the Incarnation. We will have Jesus when he comes again, riding on the clouds with great power and glory. We had better get ready! 8 HOLY CROSS CHURCH SUNDAY, JANUARY 22, 2017 MENDOTA, ILLINOIS Pope Benedict XVI s Prayer for the Unborn Lord Jesus, You who faithfully visit and fulfill with your Presence the Church and the history of men; You who in the miraculous Sacrament of your Body and Blood render us participants in divine Life and allow us a foretaste of the joy of eternal Life; We adore and bless you. Prostrated before You, source and lover of Life, truly present and alive among us, we beg you. Reawaken in us respect for every unborn life, make us capable of seeing in the fruit of the maternal womb the miraculous work of the Creator, open our hearts to generously welcoming every child that comes into life. Bless all families, sanctify the union of spouses, render fruitful their love. Accompany the choices of legislative assemblies with the light of your Spirit, so that peoples and nations may recognize and respect the sacred nature of life, of every human life. Guide the work of scientists and doctors, so that all progress contributes to the integral well-being of the person, and no one endures suppression or injustice. Give creative charity to administrators and economists, so they may realize and promote sufficient conditions so that young families can serenely embrace the birth of new children. Console the married couples who suffer because they are unable to have children and in Your goodness provide for them. Teach us all to care for orphaned or abandoned children, so they may experience the warmth of your Charity, the consolation of your divine Heart. Together with Mary, Your Mother, the great believer, in whose womb you took on our human nature, we wait to receive from You, our Only True Good and Savior, the strength to love and serve life, in anticipation of living forever in You, in communion with the Blessed Trinity. $$$ THE DAILY DOLLAR REMINDER $$$ Please continue to sell our 2017 Daily Dollar calendars or return them. Please return to one of the following: Holy Cross or Sts. Peter & Paul collection basket or mail to Holy Cross Church at 1010 Jefferson St, Mendota, IL. Thank you. Where there is no obedience, there is no virtue; there is neither goodness nor love. And where there is no love, there is no God. Without God, we cannot reach Heaven. These virtues form a ladder; if a step is missing, we fall down. St Padre Pio
