February will be an incredibly busy month with things happening near and far. Under the heading of things far away, I will be at Kanuga Conference Center February 4 8 as a reader of the General Ordination Examination or GOE. The GOE is an exam administered by the General Board of Examining Chaplains of the Episcopal Church. It is an attempt to measure the competency of seminary seniors as well as those trained in other venues who are to be ordained in the Episcopal Church. I am part of the group that reads and scores those examinations. It is an interesting task. Then, we move on to Lent. Ash Wednesday falls on February 13. We will have Holy Communion with imposition of Ashes at noon and 7:00 pm. The day before Ash Wednesday is Shrove Tuesday. Normally, Holy Innocents does a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. This year we are going to omit this activity in order to encourage everyone who can to attend the Elisabeth Von Trapp Concert on February 14, which is described in the next paragraph. This was a vestry decision and the vestry promised to make up for the Pancake Supper with a parish breakfast either later in Lent or during Easter Season. We will resume our normal Shrove Tuesday activities in From the Rector cont. pg. 2 UPCOMING CHURCH EVENTS Mark Your Calendar ASH WEDNESDAY (Feb. 13) Noon & 7:00 p.m. SPECIAL CONCERT (Feb. 14) (Elisabeth Von Trapp) 7:00 p.m. (Church Sanctuary) See pages 2& 5 for details REC PLAYERS (Feb ) Musical Play (Great Hall of Parish House) See page 2 for details LENTEN PROGRAM (Feb. 21) Simple Communion 5:30 p.m. Book Study at 6:00 p.m. See page 2 for details

FEBRUARY 2013 On Valentine s Day, Elisabeth Von Trapp will present a concert of sacred and secular music at 7:00 p.m. Elisabeth is the granddaughter of Maria and Captain Von Trapp, made famous in America by the movie The Sound of Music. What many people do not realize is that the music presented in the movie was not taken from the Von Trapp family s repertoire. It was wonderful music and I am not ashamed to tell you I can sing all the English songs in order, but it was also pure Broadway (at its best!) Elisabeth will sing folk songs, songs from the Von Trapp s actual repertoire, songs of her own composition and several from the movie. It will be a fabulous evening. Admission is free. Elisabeth is an Episcopalian and she comes and performs for a love offering. She then donates 10% of that offering back to the church as her gift of thanks. Please plan to attend and bring friends. Then, there is another treat. In times past, the Henderson Rec Players have performed in the Holy Innocents Great Hall. They return on February 15 th, 16 th and 17 th to present the musical The Last Five Years. Friday and Saturday night the performance will be done as dinner theatre. This also promises to be a wonderful, thoughtful production about the ups and downs of a long marriage as a couple reflect on, well, you guessed, the last five years of their life together. Our Lenten Program this year will be entitled The Life of the World to Come. The Bible promises eternal life, but says very, very little about what that eternal life is like. We will take a look at the vision of eternal life presented in the last chapter of the Revelation of John. Then we will take a look at two current books based upon two persons near death experiences. The first was recommended to me by Anora Rainey, Heaven is for Real: A Little Boy s Astounding Story of his Trip to Heaven and Back by Todd Burpo. The second was recommended to me by 2 Nancy Whitt, Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon s Journey into the Afterlife. Only time will tell us what heaven is like, but these visionary experiences point towards something more awesome than we could ever ask or imagine. We will begin on Thursday, February 21, Those who are able are asked to join us in the church at 5:30 p.m. for a simple service of Holy Communion. The book study will begin at 6:00 p.m. as we explore the Hope of Heaven. Again, plan to attend and bring a friend. Parish News The Youth Group will meet on all the Sunday evenings of February at 5:00 p.m. Because of the vagaries of my schedule and the business of early Lent, we will not have the healing service in February. However, we will resume in March. Henry Ross Church Musician Easter is very early this year, March 31st. The Parish Choir welcomes any singers who would like to participate in the Holy Week and Easter Services without committing to the choir full-time. We rehearse on Monday evenings at 6:00 p.m. and we look forward to your joining us. For further information contact Henry Ross, Parish Church Musician at Thank you. Tabitha Guild Betsy Catlett & Janet White We would love to have some more knitters! Please plan to join us at 10:00 a.m. in the Ladies Parlor on Tuesday, February 12th and Tuesday, February 26th. If you know of someone who would benefit from receiving a prayer shawl, please let us know. Thanks! Betsy Seifert, President The ECW met on January 22 at 10:00 a.m. in the Ladies Parlor. Nine members were present. Discussions were held about the recent bazaar that was in December and about future plans for A tithe of the bazaar s profit has been made to the Boys and Girls Club. This check will hopefully be presented in church at a future date. Ann Ellis was elected as Secretary and Shirley Young as Vice-President to complete the slate of officers with Betsy Seifert, President and Marsha Nelson, Treasurer. The next ECW meeting will be on the 4th Tuesday of February (the 26th) at 10:00 a.m. Parish news continued p. 3

THE BELL TOWER Treasurer s Report Bob Nelson, Treasurer Christian FormatioN This month, we will cover the seven funds that receive their revenue from cash donations, transfers from funds that have received revenue from the EDNC Common Trust, or quarterly funds received from an endowment which is managed by the Wells Fargo trust department. Genevieve Smith Memorial Fund: A trust fund was created in September, 1986 by the will of Claude Durham Smith in memory of his wife, Genevieve Cooper Smith. This trust is managed by the Wells Fargo Bank and the principal remains under control of their trust department. Income generated from this trust is received by the church on a quarterly basis. The Smith Committee, which is appointed by the Vestry, controls the distribution of the income. Among other expenditures, the committee supports the Smith Scholarship Fund which is used to grant scholarships to students. Smith Scholarship Fund: This fund is supported by the Genevieve Smith Memorial Fund as outlined above. There is no restriction as to the recipient or to the institution involved. Past recipients include members of the parish as well as students who have an affiliation with the parish. Scholarships have been granted to four year colleges as well as Vance-Granville Community College. Memorial Fund: This fund is supported by unspecified donations or funds designated to be given to this fund. The majority of the funds received are donations given in memory of someone who is deceased. The fund is controlled by the Vestry and is used for creating new memorials, the upkeep of current memorials, and for upgrading various areas of the church that are not part of the operating budget. Note that any nonmonetary memorial given to the church must be approved by the Vestry. Memorial Garden Fund: This fund is used for upkeep of the Memorial Garden and is funded by specified donations. The St. Clare s Guild controls the fund with guidance from the Junior Warden and approval from the Vestry. Hand Bell Fund: Funded by specified donations and is used to purchase music, equipment, and supplies. Tabitha Guild Fund: Funded by specified donations and is used to purchase supplies in making the prayer shawls. ECW Fund: Funded by revenues generated and contributions received by the ECW. The fund is administered by the ECW and is used at the discretion of the ECW. (To be continued next month) Christian Formation for Children Christian Formation for Children will resume on the First Sunday of Lent. We will continue to use the video series we began in the fall, but with an emphasis on the life of Jesus this late winter and early spring. We are in Liturgical Year C, which mostly uses the Gospel of Luke. Most of the DVD s draws from Luke so they will provide the children with much of the same material That adults are hearing the Sunday Gospels. As we did last semester, the Children will leave at the opening hymn and return at the peace. We will need two adults per Sunday to sign up. DVD s and worksheet are provided. If you can operate a DVD player, you can teach this class. Christian Formation for Adults We will look at the use of Icons as tools for meditation and prayer. This group meets at 9:35 a..m. on Sunday mornings in the Ingle Ladies Parlor in the Parish House. VESTRY News Parish Life Commission Anne Bliss & Kathy Taylor On January 20th a reception for Bishop Michael Curry was held in the Great Hall. We want to Thank all the wonderful ladies of the church that helped make the Bishop s reception such a great occasion. Approximately 60 people attended and all enjoyed the delightful food, fellowship and sharing that came from this special occasion. Thanks to everyone!! 3

THE BELL TOWER by Lisa Miravalle Evangelism Commission Elisabeth Von Trapp, world-renowned singer and granddaughter of the Von Trapp family who inspired The Sound of Music, will be performing at Holy Innocents on Valentine s Day, Thursday, February 14th at 7:00 p.m. The free hour-long concert will be performed in the church sanctuary. Singing professionally since childhood, Elisabeth has enthralled audiences from European cathedrals to Washington s National Cathedral, to the Kennedy Center, and to hundreds of performance halls and churches across the United States. She has been the featured musician at the last two Episcopal General Conventions. Elisabeth was born and raised in Vermont and is the granddaughter of the legendary Maria and Baron von Trapp, whose story inspired the The Sound of Music. She has carried on the legacy of the internationally renowned Trapp Family Singers. Building on her family s passion for music, she has created her own artistic style, ethereal, earthy, delicate, and powerful. Her voice has been likened to Judy Collins and Loreena McKennitt. Critics have called her voice hauntingly clear, joyfully expressive, and simply beautiful. Elisabeth s concert repertoire ranges from Bach to Broadway, Schubert to Sting, Rodgers and Hammerstein s Favorite Things and Edelweiss, soaring gospel tunes, and pop classics. Our own choir including special guest Don Lowery will join her at the end of her concert for two well known favorites. The concert is a special project of the Vestry s Evangelism Committee in hopes of promoting fellowship within our own church and throughout the Henderson community. Your support will help to insure its success! 5

THE BELL TOWER Actually other than the new Bishop there was little fanfare about the resolutions that were presented and all passed. ATTENTION Your Rector, who was elected to the Standing committee, a prestigious position, presented me with a belated Christmas present. A copy of The Compleat Angler by Izaak Walton. February 2013 The Deacon s Bench by the Rev. Harrel Johnson If you have never read this book, you should as it contains a great deal of spiritual guidance that is even applicable to our lives in this modern world of today. If you were brave enough to risk the threat of the black ice on this past Sunday morning then you know that the Rector, your delegates, and I have just returned from our Diocesean annual convention in Winston/Salem. I always enjoy this time, with all of its pageantry and abundance of positivism I also enjoy seeing and reconnecting with my Deacon Friends and members of past parishes and other friends that I have made during my journey through life in the Church. Bishop Curry s address to the convention was of course absolutely phenomenal as it was, when he visited us during his annual visitation the week before. The election of the new Suffagran Bishop was a milepost for the Diocese but Anne Hodges-Copple (current rector of St. Luke s, Durham) was not any real surprise. I have been to Convention but I didn t go to Galilee! I won t be purifying my self for Lent but I will go anyway. In the front of the book that Don gave me is a scripture quote from the 21 st Chapter of John Simon Peter said to them, I am going fishing. They said to him, we will go with you. I believe that I will go to Galilee and go fishing. Who will go with me? Thanks be to God that the great procession to Galilee and the outdoor celebration of the Eucharist was cancelled due to the weather. We processed and celebrated anyway although it was inside the convention center. 7
