Let not the past ever be so dear to me as to set a limit to the future. Give me courage to change my mind, when that is needed. Don Taylor, Vicar Bishop of New York City Most gracious Father Who has called me Your child to serve in the preparation of Your Altar, so that it may be a suitable place for the offering of Your Body and Blood; Sanctify my life and consecrate my hands so that I may worthily handle those Sacred Gifts which are being offered to You. As I handle holy things, grant that my whole life may be illuminated and blessed by You, in whose honor I prepare them, and grant that the people who shall be blessed by their use, may find their lives drawn closer to Him Whose Body and Blood is our hope and our strength, Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN. A Prayer for Our Rector O Lord, let me be a pillar of strength to hold him up, and not a thorn in his flesh to sap his strength, nor a burden on his back to pull him down. Let me support him without striving to possess him. Let me lift his hands without placing shackles around them. Let me give him help that he may devote more time to working for the salvation of others and less time in gratifying my vanity. Let me work for him as the minister of all the members, and not compel him to spend precious time bragging about me. Let me strive to be happy as he serves me less and others more. AMEN. Altar Guild

6 Page 7 Altar Linens Setting up for a service: 1. Choose purificators from the front of the zip-lock bag, beginning from the left. 2. Choose lavabo towels, corporals and credence table covers from the top of the pile. 3. When changing a fair linen, choose the one with the earliest laundered date. All of the above helps to control the frequency that each piece of linen is laundered. It will, therefore, last longer. Cleaning up after a service: 1. If there are no stains on the corporal or credence table covers, fold them carefully and place them on the top of their pile, in the proper baggies. 2. Remember to remove the credence table cover from the back table. 3. Remove the purificators from the bourse and replace them in the zip lock bag. 4. Place used linens and towels on the glass rod in the safe closet. 5. When changing the damask hangings, be careful to avoid making a fold on the embroidered symbols. Fold the hangings with the damask side up. 6. If a roll is available, please roll the damask veil. Care of Silver 1. Gloves should always be worn when handling the silver. 2. A committee will be notified of their turn to polish the silver by notice on the chairman s mailing card. 3. The silver should be polished at least once a quarter and before any special occasion. 4. Anytime a committee feels the silver needs attention, they should polish it. 5. Each silver piece should be placed in the appropriate silver bag. The Church of the Holy Innocents

14 Page 15 Glossary of Terms Altar Book Contains the service of the Eucharist in all its variations. It is also called the Missal. Antependia Also called pulpit falls and lectern falls. Decorative material, usually seasonal colors, that hang over the front of the pulpit and lectern. Bishop s Chair A dignified chair placed on the gospel side of the sanctuary. (Ours is now opposite, because the altar used to be pushed up against the wall.) Bread Box A small, chambered box containing extra wafers. Burse A case placed on top of the veiled communion vessels to hold extra purificators. It matches the chalice veil. Chalice A cup which is used at the altar to hold the elements of wine and water for consecration and communion. The Church of the Holy Innocents

15 Page 16 Glossary Ciborium Chrism Container that resembles the chalice, except that it has a lid. It is used to contain the wafers at the Eucharist. Holy oil used in baptism. Corporal Credence Table Cruets A ninefold placemat designed to protect the fair linen and to catch any consecrated particles or drops of wine which might fall on it during the Eucharist. Originally a small side altar, it is a small table or shelf usually at the epistle side of the altar. On it are placed the things used for the celebration of the Eucharist which are not, at first placed directly on the altar. Sometimes a credence table is used to hold the elements that are brought forward during the offertory. Containers that are usually made of glass (HI s are silver), and used to contain the water and wine during celebration of the Eucharist. Fair Linen The linen on top of the altar, covering the entire top of the altar and hanging down over the ends to any length. Altar Guild

16 Page 17 Glossary Flagons Host Lovabo Towel Pall Paschal Candle Paten Purificator Tabernacle Larger than cruets, frequently made of silver, flagons are used to contain the wine during celebration of the Eucharist. A term used when referring to Eucharistic bread after it is consecrated. A small linen towel to be used when the celebrant washed his or her fingers during the offertory. A stiffened corporal placed over the chalice. Lighted at the Easter Vigil, it stands in the sanctuary until Pentecost. A plate made of silver, gold, or ceramic to match the chalice. Upon it is placed the priest s wafer when the chalice is vested for Eucharist. A napkin-like cloth, designed to cleanse or wipe the lip of the chalice after each person is communicated. Designed to contain the Reserved Sacrament, it sits on the retable behind the altar. Wafer A term used when referring to Eucharistic bread before it is consecrated. The Church of the Holy Innocents
