1 BROADWAY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 11:00 a.m. February 17, 2013 Acts of Faith: Sermon in Song Black History Month / 1st Sunday in Lent Welcome! We are glad that you have joined us for worship today. Visitors: Please record your complete address, as well as your name, on the registers. We d like to send you a greeting! If you would like to take a short tour of the church building and grounds, meet one of our greeters at the Welcome Center after the service. Childcare for pre-school children is available during our worship service. We invite school-age children to participate in our morning worship with us, as well as to participate in our 11:15 am Children s Education Time. Inclusive Language Here at Broadway we have an inclusive language policy that recognizes and affirms the full range of diversity among persons engaged in the communication process. We are intentional that our imagery of God as well as our liturgy reflect that inclusiveness. The pastors are available to answer any questions you might have regarding the policy. The entire inclusive language policy can be found on the website. A further resource by Paul Smith, Is it Okay to call God Mother? is available through the church office. Large print bulletins are available from the ushers. Stewardship Cards: As you worship with the Broadway community today, you are invited to share in a personal way. The orange card that is in the pew pockets is for you to express how you are or might be in service to God and community this week. It is also a place for you to share prayer concerns. Use as much or as little of the card as you like. The cards will be viewed ONLY by the pastors. By placing this card in the offering plate you are symbolically acknowledging your gifts of time and talents to the glory of God. Song numbers with the designation FS refer to selections from The Faith We Sing books. All other selections are from the United Methodist Hymnal.

They can be placed in the offering plate or posted on the prayer wall. Children are invited to Children s Education Time after the Time for Young Christians.] Scripture Deuteronomy 26:1-11 [NRSV adapted] When you have come into the land that YHWH is giving you as an inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it, you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that YHWH will choose as a dwelling for God s name. You shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and say to him, Today I declare to God that I have come into the land that YHWH swore to our ancestors to give us. When the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of God, you shall make this response before YHWH: A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; * Please stand, in body or in spirit. 2
3 he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous. When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labor on us, we cried to YHWH, the God of our ancestors; God heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. God brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying display of power, and with signs and wonders; and brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O God, have given me. You shall set it down before God and bow down before God. Then you, together with the Levites and the aliens who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that God has given to you and to your house. May God bless the speaking and hearing of the Word. Amen. 5 MUSIC NOTES What is the Difference Between the Spirituals and Gospel Music? Many people ask what the difference is between the spirituals ( Tis the Ol Ship of Zion ) and Black gospel music ( Imagine Me ). Simply put, the spirituals are the Southern sacred "folk" songs created and first sung by African Americans during slavery. Their original composers are unknown, and they have assumed a position of collective ownership by the whole community. They lend themselves easily to communal singing. Many are in a call-and-response structure, with back-and-forth exchanges between the leader and the group. A formal concert tradition has evolved from the original spirituals, with solo and choral arrangements based on original slave melodies, employed for performance by amateur and professional artists. Black gospel music originated in the churches of the urban North in the 1920's, and has been the predominant music of the twentieth century Black Church. Each gospel song has an identifiable composer. Gospel fuses musical elements of both the spirituals and the blues, and incorporates extensive musical improvisation, with piano, guitar or other instrumental accompaniment. While the gospel tradition descended directly from the spirituals and the blues, the spirituals have also continued to exist as a parallel cultural force. Blackbird, by Paul McCartney and John Lennon, was written as a response to escalating racial tensions in the southern United States. Paul was in Scotland at the time shortly after the race riots around the violent and confrontational desegregation of the Little Rock school system The Little Rock Nine. It was a song of support for the Civil Rights movement. Gracias A La Vida by Mercedes Sosa. Mercedes Sosa, known as La Negra (literally: The Black One), was an Argentine singer who was popular throughout Latin America and many countries outside the continent. With her roots in Argentine folk music, Sosa became one of the preeminent exponents of nueva canción (a musical style which renewed traditional Latin American folk music and was often associated with revolutionary movements). She gave voice to songs written by both Brazilians and Cubans. She was best known as the voice of the voiceless ones. She sang Gracias A La Vida (English: Thanks to Life) and considered it a personal anthem.
