BROADWAY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 11:00 a.m. July 9, 2017 Fifth Sunday after Pentecost Welcome! We are glad that you have joined us for worship today. Visitors: Please record your address, as well as your name, on the registers. We d like to send you a greeting! Inclusive Language: Here at Broadway we have an inclusive language policy that recognizes and affirms the full range of diversity among persons engaged in the communication process. We are intentional that our imagery of God as well as our liturgy reflect that inclusiveness. We use a variety of pronouns for God, just as our community uses a variety of pronouns as we grow and learn beyond the binary. In the spirit of hospitality, please ask others for their preferred pronoun. The pastoral team is available to answer any questions you might have regarding the policy. The entire inclusive language policy can be found on the website. A further resource is Paul Smith s book, Is it Okay to call God Mother?. Nursery: Children of all ages are welcome in worship. When children need a break, parents can take them to our unstaffed nursery room next to the Sanctuary. Safe Sanctuary: Our young people are fantastic, and we know that you want to take pictures/videos of them, but please help keep our youth safe and do not share photos/videos of them in any public forum (i.e. YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc.). Thank you! Large print bulletins are available from the ushers. Prayer/Stewardship Cards: As you worship with the Broadway community today, you are invited to share in a personal way. The orange card that is in the pew pockets is for you to express how you are or might be in service to God and community this week. It is also a place for you to share prayer concerns. Use as much or as little of the card as you like. You may choose to have the card added to the prayer wall or to be viewed ONLY by the pastoral team. By placing this card in the offering plate you are symbolically acknowledging your gifts of time and talents to the glory of God. Song numbers with the designation FS refer to selections from The Faith We Sing books. All other selections are from the United Methodist Hymnal. Giving: God is inviting you to specific ministry of sharing your resources. Please be as generous as you can in your giving. To give online, visit us at broadwaychurchchicago.com/give or scan the QR code at right. Thank you for your commitment to God s purposes through our faith community!

Words of Centering What lingers from the parent s individual past, unresolved or incomplete, often becomes part of her or his irrational parenting. ~ Virginia Satir Music of Gathering Announcements *Call to Worship Lift praises to the name of our God; bless God s name forever! Great is our God and worthy of praise! God, you watch over us in love and hear the desperate cries of those who call to you! How great is our God! How great is our God! Bless God s name forever! *Opening Hymn: Morning Dawns and Love Awakens Welcome Statement of Community and Connection (Please check in on Facebook and/or on wifi password is , and pass the friendship pads to register your attendance and any updated contact information.) Welcome to worship, God s beloved! YES, I Am Welcome! Bienvenidas y bienvenidos! Scripture Reading... Genesis 24:34-38 I am Abraham s steward, he said. YHWH has greatly blessed Abraham. He is now a wealthy person. God has given him flocks, herds, silver, gold, attendants, camels, and donkeys. Sarah, * Please rise, in body or in spirit. Bold type within liturgy indicates congregational response. 2

Abraham s spouse, bore a son late in life, and he is Abraham s heir. Abraham swore me by an oath, saying, You must not allow my son to marry any of the Canaanites, in whose land we live. Go to the land of my mother and father, to my kin, to find a spouse for Isaac. The Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. Amen. Prayers of the People Sung Response: There is a Balm in Gilead Scripture Reading... Genesis 24:42-49 [Abraham s steward said:] Today, when I came to the spring, I prayed, O God of my elder Abraham, let my journey be a successful one. Let it happen like this here I am at the spring, and when a young woman comes to draw water, I will ask her, Please let me have a drink of water from the spring. If she answers, Have a drink, and I will water your camels as well, let it be that she is the woman whom YHWH has chosen to become the spouse of Abraham s heir Isaac. Before I had finished praying, I saw Rebecca approaching the spring, shouldering her water jar. She went down to the spring to draw water, and I asked her, May I please have a drink of water? She immediately put the jar into the spring and said, Drink, and I ll water your camels as well. So I drank while she watered the camels. Then I asked her about her parentage. She replied, I am the daughter of Bethuel, ben-milcah and Nahor ; whereupon I put the ring in her nose and the bracelets on her arms, and I bowed down and worshipped YHWH. I praised YHWH, the God of my elder Abraham, who led me to the right place to find the granddaughter of Abraham s brother for Isaac. Please tell me that you will show this kindness and loyalty to Abraham! If not, just say so, and I will go to other places. May God bless the speaking and hearing of the Word. Amen. A Time for Young Christians [During the Time for Young Christians, you are invited to use the Prayer Cards in the pew pockets to indicate prayer concerns you would like lifted up in prayer during this week. They can be placed in the offering plate or posted on the prayer wall. Children are invited to return to their seats following the Time for Young Christians.] Scripture Reading... Genesis 24:58-67 [Rebecca s mother and brother] called Rebecca and put the question to her. She replied, Yes, I am ready to leave. So Rebecca and her entourage went with Abraham s steward and his entourage. 3

They blessed Rebecca and said to her: You are our sister, and you will increase to thousands and tens of thousands! May your descendants take possession of the gates of their foes! Rebecca and her attendants got ready, then mounted their camels to follow Abraham s steward. The steward took Rebecca, and they set off on their journey. Isaac had gone to live in the region of the Negev, and came to the Well of the Living One Who Sees Me. One day toward evening he went out in the field to meditate, and as he looked around, he saw that camels were approaching. When Rebecca saw Isaac, she alighted from her camel and asked the steward, Who is that man out there, walking through the field toward us? That is indeed Isaac, he replied. She then covered herself with her veil. The steward recounted to Isaac all that had been done. Then Isaac led Rebecca into Sarah s tent, and she became his wife, and he loved her. That is how Isaac was comforted after the loss of his mother. The Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. Amen. Reflection... Rev. Alka Lyall Mission Minute Sunday: Lee Memorial Girls High School & Missionary Clara Biswas... see page Stewardship: Draw the Circle Wide The Offering of Gifts [Broadway is committed to the financial support of its identity, vision, and ministry by tithing. Consider making an offering this morning of 10 percent of your income from this past week.] The Offering of Music *The Presentation of Offerings *The Doxology... (tune # 95) Praise God from whom all blessing flow. Praise God all creatures here below. Praise God above ye heavenly hosts. Creator, Christ and Holy Ghost. Amen. 4

July Mission Minutes Lee Memorial Girls High School, Calcutta, India Previously, LMGHS had the boarding capacity to accommodate 250 young girls. Due to the demolition of two old dormitories, and its dilapidated conditions, they now only have the capacity to accommodate 75 girls, which is adversely affecting and imparting on the education objectives at Lee Memorial Mission, and for the underprivileged children of the community. Therefore they are in urgent need of two dormitories, kitchen, dinning hall, matrons room, toilets and wash rooms to accommodate at least 150 girls. It will cost $181,597 to complete the whole project. Missionary Clara Biswas Clara Mridula Biswas works in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. She works with the poorest of the poor in slum areas and garbage dumps to facilitate their move to relocation and rehabilitation centers. She assists education programs, giving 620 public school students music, computer, and art classes, and she also assists health programs that refer patients to hospitals and local organizations. MEDIA UPDATE There will be no media presentations during the 11 AM service between July and August while the media team is on summer vacation. Being on the media team is a form of ministry and stewardship, and we re in need of additional members to meet a goal of continuous media PowerPoint presentations for 11 AM Sunday services beginning in September. In order to set the church up for success, here s what the media team needs: Preferably 4 to 8 media volunteers willing to commit to a five-month rotation (Sept Jan or Feb June). Four volunteers per rotation are desired (e.g., each volunteer would only need to create one media presentation in a month with four Sundays). Required skills and attributes: An ability to develop a simple, and creative PowerPoint presentation with attention to detail; Ensuring microphones are turned on and projection screen is deployed prior to start of service; Willingness to perform media for special occasions upon request pending media team availability; Flexibility in considering trade request with fellow media team members Ideally, interested volunteers have basic PowerPoint skills. We ll provide training one month prior to each five-month rotation. Please see one of us if interested, and thank you for your ministry and stewardship at Broadway. ~ Richard Johnson, Sheila Ashby-Schultz and Nick Campanile 7
