BROADWAY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 11:00 a.m. September 20, 2015 Living Brave Space Heritage Month Welcome! We are glad that you have joined us for worship today. Visitors: Please record your complete address, as well as your name, on the registers. We d like to send you a greeting! If you would like to take a short tour of the church building and grounds, meet one of our greeters at the Welcome Center after the service. Child Care and Children s Education: Child care is available for children up to age 6 from 10am-12:30pm in the Nursery. Children ages 7 and older are invited to participate in our 11:15am Children s Education Time in the Wesley Room. We practice safe sanctuary. Inclusive Language Here at Broadway we have an inclusive language policy that recognizes and affirms the full range of diversity among persons engaged in the communication process. We are intentional that our imagery of God as well as our liturgy reflect that inclusiveness. We use a variety of pronouns for God, just as our community uses a variety of pronouns as we grow and learn beyond the binary. In the spirit of hospitality, please ask others for their preferred pronoun. The pastors are available to answer any questions you might have regarding the policy. The entire inclusive language policy can be found on the website. A further resource by Paul Smith, Is it Okay to call God Mother? is available through the church office. Large print bulletins are available from the ushers. Stewardship Cards: As you worship with the Broadway community today, you are invited to share in a personal way. The orange card that is in the pew pockets is for you to express how you are or might be in service to God and community this week. It is also a place for you to share prayer concerns. Use as much or as little of the card as you like. The cards will be viewed ONLY by the pastors. By placing this card in the offering plate you are symbolically acknowledging your gifts of time and talents to the glory of God. Song numbers with the designation FS refer to selections from The Faith We Sing books. All other selections are from the United Methodist Hymnal. Giving Your contributions are needed for everything from special programs to basic operating expenses both are deserving of your support. Please be as generous as you can in the year ahead. To give online, visit us at broadwaychurchchicago.com/give or scan the QR code at right. Thank you for your commitment to God s purposes through our faith community!

Words of Centering Soy Capaz, Soy Fuerte, Soy Invencible, Soy Mujer ~ Desconocido I m Capable, I m Strong, I m Invincible, I m Woman ~ Unknown C REATING COMMUNITY SPACE: N AMING DIFFERENT POINTS ON THE JOURNEY Music of Gathering [Mark Slima, piano] *Call to Worship In attempt to discredit the Zapatista leader, Sub-Comandante Marcos. Mexican government officials put forth the idea that Marcos was gay. The following was his response: Yes, Marcos is gay. Marcos is gay in San Francisco, Black in South Africa, an Asian In Europe, a Chicano in San Isidro, an anarchist in Spain, a Palestinian in Israel, a Jew in Germany, a Gypsy in Poland, a Mohawk in Quebec, a pacifist in Bosnia, a single woman on the Metro at 10PM a gang member in the slums, an unemployed worker, an unhappy student, and, of course, a Zapatista in the mountains [continued ] * Please rise, in body or in spirit. 2 Bold type within liturgy indicates congregational response.

Marcos is all the exploited, marginalized, oppressed minorities resisting and saying, Enough. He is every minority who is now beginning to speak and majority that must shut up and listen. He is every un-tolerated group searching for a way to speak. Everything that makes power and the good consciences of those in power uncomfortable this is Marcos. *Singing Together Welcome Statement of Community and Connection [Congregational Response:] Yes, I am welcome! Bienvenidas y bienvenidos! (Don t forget to check in on Facebook and/or on Wifi password is ) C OMMUNITY MEMBERS INTENTIONALLY S EEK UNDERSTANDING God s Story in Scripture Psalm 1 Happiness comes to those who reject the path of violence, who refuse to associate with criminals or even to sit with people who belittle others. Happiness comes to those who delight in the Law of YHWH and meditate on it day and night. They re like trees planted by flowing water they bear fruit in every season, and their leaves never wither: everything they do will prosper. But not wrongdoers! They re like chaff that the wind blows away. They won t have a taproot to anchor them when judgment comes, nor will corrupt individuals be given a place at the Gathering of the Just. YHWH watches over the steps of those who do justice; but those on a path of violence and injustice will find themselves irretrievably lost. May God bless the speaking and hearing of the Word. Amen. Receiving God in Song Eres Fiel by Israel Houghton [Broadway Choir] 3

A Time for Young Christians Moon Rope / Un lazo a la luna by Lois Ehlert [shared by Satia Orange and Liza Echeverria] [During the Time for Young Christians, you are invited to use the Prayer Cards in the pew pockets to indicate prayer concerns you would like lifted up in prayer during this week. They can be placed in the offering plate or posted on the prayer wall. Children are invited to Children s Education Time after the Time for Young Christians.] *God s Story in Scripture Mark 9:30-37 They left that district and began a journey through Galilee, but Jesus did not want anyone to know about it. He was teaching the disciples along these lines: The Promised One is going to be delivered into the hands of others and will be put to death, but three days later this One will rise again. Though they failed to understand these words, they were afraid to question him. They returned home to Capernaum. Once they were inside the house, Jesus began to ask them, What were you discussing on the way home? At this they fell silent, for on the way they had been arguing about who among them was the most important. So Jesus sat down and called the Twelve over and said, If any of you wants to be first, you must be the last one of all and at the service of all. Then Jesus brought a little child into their midst and, putting his arm around the child, said to them, Whoever welcomes a child such as this for my sake welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the One who sent me. Here ends the reading of the Gospel. This is the Good News of Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God. Amen. Panel Discussion: Identity; Latin@, Hispanic, Afro-Latin@ or other *Singing Together Santo, Santo, Santo... FS 2007 C OMMUNITY MEMBERS ENGAGE The Ritual of Membership 4

Mike Kelly, Jeff Mis The Charge Sisters and brothers, there are some among us who have prepared themselves for membership and wish to be in covenant with our community of faith. Let them present themselves. Before they take their vows, will you give them the charge of membership? We charge you to remember our identity. We are a diverse people united by the Spirit revealed in Jesus of Nazareth. Though we are many, like a family we are one. We are a single gathering yet part of a great community. We are the Broadway congregation. We are the United Methodist denomination. We are the church of Jesus Christ. We charge you to remember what we are about. We follow Christ. In Christ s name we gather to give praise and learn: we worship, we study, we tell the story. In Christ s name we go forth to serve and share: we set the captives free. We live and love in the world for its health and its healing. We charge you to be one with us: we are weak, we are strong, much of the time we fail to be what we say we are. To some we look like hypocrites, to others like saints. But, in weakness and in strength, we are bound to one another and to God with a promise. We charge you now to make that promise. The Vows and Response The Blessing The Response of the Community We welcome you to the Body of Christ in this place and with this community. We celebrate that the company of Christ s disciples is richer for your presence. May you be filled with the Holy Spirit. May your proclamation of the Word, in whatever form, be enabling. May your life lived in mission be a challenge. And may the Creator s power sustain you and give you comfort. Amen. Sung Response Bind Us Together... FS

A NNOUNCEMENTS TODAY SEPTEMBER 20, 2015 Sunday Morning Adult Education From a United Methodist Resource titled, Widen the Circle: a Call to Beloved Community, we continue our call and mission to be an inclusive community. For justice seekers who yearn to see justice for all and reconciliation among all oppressed people, this is the class for you. Join us in the Pillow Room, downstairs, Sunday mornings at 10:15am, for this timely discussion. The topics are: Recognizing our brokenness; Loving our neighbor; Welcome all people; and Building the Beloved Community. Kaleidoscope Choir and Unique Spirit Over the past year, we have been observing all of our singers grow-both musically and physically-and we ve been thinking of ways in which to meet all of their individual needs. We would like to challenge our older singers with more complex music in a wider range, while providing our younger singers with musical concepts appropriate to their developmental level, and music within their vocal range. We are thrilled to announce the creation of a second choir to achieve these goals: Unique Spirit, a choir of children second grade and up. The singers themselves chose their new name! Kaleidoscope Choir remains an introductory choir for our singers who are 4 years old (or turning 4 within the school year) up to the end of first grade. These choirs practice concurrently at the regular Kaleidoscope time: Sundays from 10:15-10:55am, and ALL singers will gather in the Wesley room at 10:15am for warmups each week before we divide to rehearse our separate pieces. With the addition of Julia Puac-Romero to our team of directors, we can continue our Safe Sanctuaries practice of having two adults with each group of singers. Jackie Boyd has allowed us the use of her office (with piano, in the basement) for Unique Spirit. Wanted: creative, exciting, passionate Children s Church Teams We have a great group of young Christians who are eager to learn about who God is through scripture, stories and play. If you are interested in leading once a month, please contact Rev. Vernice (thorn.vernice@gmail.com) or Jenn Peterson (jpbrnidgrl@gmail.com). We have a set curriculum and additional training to assist you. You will also lead in pairs. Thank you. Anti-Racist White Caucus Broadway s Anti-Racist White Caucus will meet at Broadway on the third Sunday of each month, directly following the 11:00 service, concurrent with the POC Discussion Group. This fall we will be reading and discussing Ta-Nehisi Coates new book, Between the World and Me. Our first discussion will be today. Anyone who identifies as an anti-racist white person is welcome to join our discussion. To find more information, please find our Facebook group, BUMC ARWC, and/or join our yahoo group by sending an to broadway-arwc-subscribe@yahoogroups.com, with the subject line subscribe.
