1 BROADWAY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 11:00 a.m. March 22, 2015 Living Brave Space Fifth Sunday of Lent Heritage Month Welcome! We are glad that you have joined us for worship today. Visitors: Please record your complete address, as well as your name, on the registers. We d like to send you a greeting! If you would like to take a short tour of the church building and grounds, meet one of our greeters at the Welcome Center after the service. Child Care and Children s Education: Child care is available for children up to age 6 from 10am-12:30pm in the Nursery. Children ages 7 and older are invited to participate in our 11:15am Children s Education Time in the Wesley Room. We practice safe sanctuary. Inclusive Language Here at Broadway we have an inclusive language policy that recognizes and affirms the full range of diversity among persons engaged in the communication process. We are intentional that our imagery of God as well as our liturgy reflect that inclusiveness. We use a variety of pronouns for God, just as our community uses a variety of pronouns as we grow and learn beyond the binary. In the spirit of hospitality, please ask others for their preferred pronoun. The pastors are available to answer any questions you might have regarding the policy. The entire inclusive language policy can be found on the website. A further resource by Paul Smith, Is it Okay to call God Mother? is available through the church office. Large print bulletins are available from the ushers. Stewardship Cards: As you worship with the Broadway community today, you are invited to share in a personal way. The orange card that is in the pew pockets is for you to express how you are or might be in service to God and community this week. It is also a place for you to share prayer concerns. Use as much or as little of the card as you like. The cards will be viewed ONLY by the pastors. By placing this card in the offering plate you are symbolically acknowledging your gifts of time and talents to the glory of God. Song numbers with the designation FS refer to selections from The Faith We Sing books. All other selections are from the United Methodist Hymnal. Giving Your contributions are needed for everything from special programs to basic operating expenses both are deserving of your support. Please be as generous as you can in the year ahead. To give online, visit us at broadwaychurchchicago.com/give or scan the QR code at right. Thank you for your commitment to God s purposes through our faith community!

2 Words of Centering I live my life in widening circles that reach out across the world. I may not complete this last one but I give myself to it. I circle around God, around the primordial tower. I ve been circling for thousands of years and I still don t know: am I a falcon, a storm, or a great song? ~ Rainer Maria Rilke C REATING COMMUNITY SPACE: N AMING DIFFERENT POINTS ON THE JOURNEY Entrance of Heritage Month Honorees Charolette Lill, Melferd Bose, Fran Markwardt, Dee Dorsey, Paula Roderick Receiving God in Song I Am Not Forgotten by Israel Houghton [Broadway Dancers] *Call to Worship Psalm # 821 *Singing Together Jesus Calls Us... # 398 * Please rise, in body or in spirit. 3 *Welcome and the Celebration of Community and Connection [Congregational Response:] Yes, I am welcome! Bienvenidas y bienvenidos! C OMMUNITY MEMBERS INTENTIONALLY S EEK UNDERSTANDING A Reading from the Prophet Jeremiah 31:31-34 Behold, the days are coming, says YHWH, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them up out of the land of Egypt a covenant they broke, though I was their spouse, says YHWH. But this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says YHWH: I will put my Law in their minds and on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they need to teach one another or remind one another to listen to YHWH. All of them, high and low alike, will listen to me, says YHWH, for I will forgive their misdeeds and will remember their sins no more. The Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. Amen. Receiving God in Song Old Time Religion arr. Mark Hayes [Broadway Choir] A Time for Young Christians [During the Time for Young Christians, you are invited to use the Prayer Cards in the pew pockets to indicate prayer concerns you would like lifted up in prayer during this week. They can be placed in the offering plate or posted on the prayer wall. Children are invited to Children s Education Time after the Time for Young Christians.] *The Gospel John 12:20-33 Among those who had come up to worship at the Passover festival were some Greeks. They approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and put forth this request: Please, we would like to see Jesus. Philip went to tell Andrew, and together the two went to tell Jesus. Jesus 3

4 replied, Now the hour has come for the Chosen One to be glorified. The truth of the matter is, unless a grain of wheat falls on the ground and dies, it remains only a single grain; but if it dies, it yields a rich harvest. If you love your life you ll lose it; if you hate your life in this world you ll keep it for eternal life. Anyone who wants to work for me must follow in my footsteps, and wherever I am, my worker will be there too. Anyone who works for me will be honored by Abba God. Now my soul is troubled. What will I say: Abba, save me from this hour? But it was for this very reason that I have come to this hour. Abba, glorify your name! A voice came from heaven: I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again. The crowds that stood nearby heard this and said it was a clap of thunder; others said, It was an angel speaking. Jesus answered, It was not for my sake that this voice came, but for yours. Sentence is now being passed on this word; now the ruler of this world will be overthrown. And when I am lifted up from this earth, I will draw all people to myself. By these words Jesus indicated the kind of death he would die. Here ends the reading of the Gospel. This is the Good News of Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God. Amen. 6 The Thanksgiving Over the Water The Baptizing The Ritual of Membership The Charge Sisters and brothers, there are some among us who wish to be in covenant with our community of faith. Let them present themselves. Before they take their vows, will you give them the charge of membership? We charge you to remember our identity. We are a diverse people united by the Spirit revealed in Jesus of Nazareth. Though we are many, like a family we are one. We are a single gathering yet part of a great community. We are the Broadway congregation. We are the United Methodist denomination. We are the church of Jesus Christ. We charge you to remember what we are about. We follow Christ. In Christ s name we gather to give praise and learn: we worship, we study, we tell the story. In Christ s name we go forth to serve and share: we set the captives free. We live and love in the world for its health and its healing. We charge you to be one with us: we are weak, we are strong, much of the time we fail to be what we say we are. To some we look like hypocrites, to others like saints. But, in weakness and in strength, we are bound to one another and to God with a promise. We charge you now to make that promise. The Vows and Response The Blessing The Response of the Community We welcome you to the Body of Christ in this place and with this community. We celebrate that the company of Christ s disciples is richer for your presence. May you be filled with the Holy Spirit. May your proclamation of the Word, in whatever form, be empowering. May your life lived in ministry be a challenge. And may the Creator s power sustain you and give you comfort. Amen. 6

8 The Mission Minute for March is Southern Poverty Law Center. ( This month marks the 50th anniversary of the March on Selma and Bloody Sunday, which ultimately led to the passage of the voting rights act. So it seemed fitting to make Southern Poverty Law Center our mission minute for March. The Southern Poverty Law Center is dedicated to fighting hatred and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Using litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy, the Center works toward the day when the ideals of equal justice and equal opportunity will be a reality. The Center is based in Montgomery, Alabama, the birthplace of the modern civil rights movement, and has offices in Atlanta, New Orleans, Miami, Fla., and Jackson, Miss. Visit for more information. 11 125 YEARS OF BROADWAY Established on July 12, 1890 Christ s Chapel at 1673 N. Halsted, which was the west side of Halsted, between School and Melrose St. (the street numbering system was changed at a later date.) February 1891 Moved to Oak Hall on Clark St. with 15 persons received on probation; in ten years, membership was 175. July 1891 Corner of Evanston Ave. and Buckingham Place was selected as site for building. June 1, 1902 Formal dedication with 275 members Name changed to Broadway Avenue Episcopal Church as the street name changed. Mid 1950 s major remodeling of church sanctuary. Mid 1960 s Purchased small Victorian house at 618 and vacant property at 627 Buckingham to expand our parking lot area when needed. After the fire, the 627 property was sold which helped finance and kick-start the rebuilding. The 618 property became our church meeting place for several years after the fire Church name changed to Broadway Methodist Church Church name changed to Broadway United Methodist Church as the Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren denominations merged. February 12, 1983 Fire gutted the church building. March 1987 Construction began on new building with Rev. Louise Mahon as pastor. Easter 1988 First service in the new church. Fall 1988 Official move to new building. Church parking lot was completed. Sept. 16, 1990 Service of Consecration for the new building and celebration of 100 years of Broadway. Early 1990 s Refinanced new building and completed the basement with working elevator, AC, carpeting, bathrooms and classrooms. Fall 1995 Voted to be a Reconciling congregation. September 1998 Rev. Greg Dell officiated at the Holy Union of two gay church members. This was consistent to Rev. Dell s ministry, but the Methodist Church Book of Discipline decreed such service a violation of the discipline. A complaint was filed against Greg later in the Fall of Fall 1998 An organization, In All Things Charity, a network of clergy and others in the denomination was formed to support, organize media contacts, raise money for a trial, and be the center of work needed to be done to support Rev. Dell. Fall 1998 Church Within a Church movement was created to instruct and ordain folk who are not accepted for ordination within the United Methodist or other denominations. Spring 1999 Church Trial for Rev. Greg Dell. The trial was held at Downers Grove UMC. The trial lasted for two long days and Rev. Dell was found guilty late Friday night. A sad Palm Sunday celebration followed on Sunday. July 1999 Rev. Dell began a one year suspension from official ministry; Rev. Jenny Weber, who had earlier served as our seminarian intern, was assigned our pastor for that year. July 2000 Rev. Dell returned. September 2001 Rev. Vernice Thorn came to Broadway as a student intern from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary. Vernice officially joined the pastoral staff as pastor upon her seminary graduation in July 2006 Rev. Dell took a medical leave. Rev. Jenny Weber came as pastor to Broadway. August 2009 Rev. Lois McCullen Parr was called to Broadway and has served as co-pastor with Vernice to the present. July 2015 Rev. Alka Lyall will accept the pastorate at Broadway. BROADWAY LIVES ON.. 11

12 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Giving to Broadway What is stewardship? Stewardship is about taking care of something valuable that has been entrusted to us. In bygone days, a great estate had a steward to manage the owner s lands and operations. God has given each of us a unique set of gifts, and the idea of stewardship is to yield back to God or to the church a part of what we have been given. The stewardship team at Broadway is charged with encouraging members of the congregation to give of their time, talents, and treasure. I give regularly during service. Why do you want me to pledge? We absolutely are grateful for every dollar that you give. However, pledges are especially important because they represent your commitment to provide a set amount for the year. Using this information, the church can better plan our budget; we have a better idea of the level of giving we can expect to see. When you make a commitment to give to Broadway, you are invested in outcomes. What if I ve never given before? As Rabbi Hillel said over 2000 years ago, If not now, when? We welcome your gift and your giving commitment at any time. Take that first step. How do I make a commitment? You can fill out a blue pledge card the next time you re at church and drop it in the offering plate. You can call the church during office hours at and pledge over the phone. You can print and fill out our online pledge card (link on and bring it with you to church or mail it in. You can go to this page on our website and click on the blue button Click Here to Donate. You ll be able to specify a dollar amount to pay weekly or monthly. See more about Online Giving below. Tell me about making a Recurring Donation through Online Giving Go to and click on the blue button Click Here to Donate. You ll be asked to enter information about your gift, identify yourself, and specify debit, credit, or automatic bank account withdrawal. You ll be able to designate whether your pledge should go towards our Apportionment or not (the amount we owe to the United Methodist Church). What is a recurring donation? A recurring donation is a donation set up to occur automatically on a regularly scheduled basis. In this case weekly or monthly. What are the benefits of setting up a recurring donation? Reduces check writing for frequent donors Allows donations to continue uninterrupted during absences Allows donations to be spread out over time Reduces administrative costs for our organization Consumes fewer resources than paper check processing I m not sure. What if I lose my job or my financial circumstances change? We understand. Things happen. If you need to change your commitment at any time, just contact us. Your pledge represents your voluntary giving; it s not a legally binding contract. How much should I pledge? Take time to think about an amount that is workable for you. Pray about your decision if you wish. We encourage giving a specific percentage of your gross or net income. The Bible challenges us to tithe (to give 10% of our income) as the giving goal in our lives. Start where you can and increase your gift from one year to the next. Some members of the congregation give less than 10%, some more. But don t be intimidated by the 10% number. Even if you can only give $1 a month, but give it joyfully, that will make a difference to the church and to you. 12

13 A NNOUNCEMENTS TODAY MARCH 22, 2015 Adult Education Hour Please join us on Sunday mornings at 10:15am in the Pillow Room as we reflect on and discuss our next book The President s Devotional by Joshua Debois. Every day, DuBois provided President Obama with a morning devotional weaving together scripture, song, prayer, and reflections, motivated by the spirit of God and infused with joyful flair. The President s Devotional contains the best of these devotionals, daily spiritual guidance that offer peace, comfort, and inspiration throughout the entire year. Potluck following the 11:00 Worship Service today. Please bring a dish to pass. Easter Flowers Please see page 9 for information on ordering Easter flowers. Orders are due today. Sharing Stories of Our Faith Journeys As part of efforts to strengthen Sunday morning Children s Education for our older kids, we d like to ask members of the Broadway community to serve as special guests during Children s Church (during the 11:00am Sunday service) to share their stories of how faith has been part of their lives. The idea is to showcase for the kids the rich variety of faith journeys represented by members of our community, and prepare the kids to understand that there isn t a single right way to be in relationship with God and church. To volunteer or find out more, please contact Ted Pfeiffer at tedpfeiffer@aol.com. Please put Faith Journeys in the subject line of your message. **************************** THIS WEEK MARCH 23-28, 2015 Wednesday Night Live (WNL) Sanctuary Prayer is open to the church and community each Wednesday at 5:30pm.
