BROADWAY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 11:00 a.m. February 1, 2015 Living Brave Space Black History Month: Claiming Identity Welcome! We are glad that you have joined us for worship as we celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion today. The United Methodist Church practices open communion which means that any and all who respond to the invitation are welcome to share in the Sacrament. Visitors: Please record your complete address, as well as your name, on the registers. We d like to send you a greeting! If you would like to take a short tour of the church building and grounds, meet one of our greeters at the Welcome Center after the service. Childcare for pre-school children is available during our worship service. We invite school-age children to participate in our morning worship with us, as well as to participate in our 11:15 am Children s Education Time. Inclusive Language Here at Broadway we have an inclusive language policy that recognizes and affirms the full range of diversity among persons engaged in the communication process. We are intentional that our imagery of God as well as our liturgy reflect that inclusiveness. We use a variety of pronouns for God, just as our community uses a variety of pronouns as we grow and learn beyond the binary. In the spirit of hospitality, please ask others for their preferred pronoun. The pastors are available to answer any questions you might have regarding the policy. The entire inclusive language policy can be found on the website. A further resource by Paul Smith, Is it Okay to call God Mother? is available through the church office. Large print bulletins are available from the ushers. Stewardship Cards: As you worship with the Broadway community today, you are invited to share in a personal way. The orange card that is in the pew pockets is for you to express how you are or might be in service to God and community this week. It is also a place for you to share prayer concerns. Use as much or as little of the card as you like. The cards will be viewed ONLY by the pastors. By placing this card in the offering plate you are symbolically acknowledging your gifts of time and talents to the glory of God. Song numbers with the designation FS refer to selections from The Faith We Sing books. All other selections are from the United Methodist Hymnal. Giving Your contributions are needed for everything from special programs to basic operating expenses both are deserving of your support. Please be as generous as you can in the year ahead. To give online, visit us at broadwaychurchchicago.com/give or scan the QR code at right. Thank you for your commitment to God s purposes through our faith community!
Words of Centering When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace. ~ Jimi Hendrix True Community is based upon equality, mutuality, and reciprocity. It affirms the richness of human diversity as well as the common human ties that bind us together. ~ Rev. Pauli Murray Centering Music [Mark Slima, piano] Introduction of Black History Month and Theme Trading Cards! Welcome and the Celebration of Community and Connection [Congregational Response:] Yes, I am welcome! Bienvenidas y bienvenidos! *A Brave Litany [The Call to Worship was adapted from the song Bold as Love written by Jimi Hendrix. As you participate in the call to worship today, reflect on what it means to live brave space and be bold as love and how we re all together in the fight for equality and justice. Please note: this song was written in the first person so please use your preferred gender pronouns.] Anger, he smiles, towering in shiny metallic purple armor, Queen Jealousy, envy waits behind him, Her fiery green gown sneers at the grassy ground [continued on following page ] 2
Blue are the life-giving waters taken for granted, They quietly understand Once happy turquoise armies lay opposite ready, But wonder why the fight is on But they re all bold as love My red is so confident that s/he flashes trophies of war, and ribbons of euphoria Orange is young, full of daring, But very unsteady for the first go round My yellow in this case is not so mellow, In fact I m trying to say it s frightened like me And all these emotions of mine keep holding me from, Giving my life to a rainbow like you But, I m bold as love Well I m bold, bold as love I m bold as love *Singing Together Lift Every Voice and Sing... # 519 if you tried and failed at tryin, feel you ve played a losin game, if you need a friend to call on, remember my name. ~ Alberta Hunter Our Faith Story Scripture reminds us that people of faith are always changing their names! Abram Abraham & Sarai Sarah Genesis 17:1-5; God s covenant with Abraham When Abram was 99 years old, God appeared to Abram and said to him, I am El Shaddai. Walk with me and be trustworthy. I will make a covenant between us and I will give you many, many descendants. Abram fell on his face, and God said to him, But me, my covenant is with you; you will be the ancestor of many nations. And because I have made you the ancestor of many nations, your name will no longer be Abram but Abraham. God said to Abraham, As for your wife Sarai, you will no longer call her Sarai. Her name will now be Sarah. I will bless her and even give you a son from her. I will bless her so that she will become nations, and kings of peoples will come from her. * Please rise, in body or in spirit. Bold type within liturgy indicates congregational response. 3
Jacob Israel Genesis 35:10 After Jacob Wrestles with the Angel God said to him, Your name is Jacob, but your name will be Jacob no longer. No, your name will be Israel. And he named him Israel. Simon Peter John 1:35-42 Jesus calls disciples The next day John was standing again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus walking along he said, Look! The Lamb of God! The two disciples heard what he said, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he asked, What are you looking for? They said, Rabbi (which is translated Teacher), where are you staying? He replied, Come and see. So they went and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o clock in the afternoon. One of the two disciples who heard what John said and followed Jesus was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter. He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, We have found the Messiah (which is translated Christ). He led him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas (which is translated Peter). Saul Paul The Acts of the Apostles Commentary What we see in the book of Acts is that, up until Chapter 13, the apostle is referred to as Saul (his Hebrew birth name, Sha ul). Thereafter, except for flashbacks, he is referred to as Paul. Many people believe his name is changed at conversion; however, scripture doesn t bear this out (i.e., God doesn t change his name). Since Acts 13 is the chapter that Paul begins his apostolic ministry, which involves a great deal of international travel, he thus appears to have picked for himself the Greek name Paul (Paulos) to use in Greek-speaking circles ( I have become all things to all, he writes in 1 Corinthians 9) Receiving God in Song Order My Steps by Glen Burleigh [The Broadway Choir] 4
A Time for Young Christians [Javarus Mack] [During the Time for Young Christians, you are invited to use the Prayer Cards in the pew pockets to indicate prayer concerns you would like lifted up in prayer during this week. They can be placed in the offering plate or posted on the prayer wall. Children are invited to Children s Education Time after the Time for Young Christians.] Reflections on Claiming Identity & Name [Rob Carnilius, Anna DeShawn, & Chantal Hayes ] I think that the human race does command its own destiny and that that destiny can eventually embrace the stars. ~ Lorraine Hansberry *Singing Together This Little Light of Mine... text below This little light of mine, I m gonna let it shine, (3x) Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine! Hide it under a bushel? No! I m gonna let it shine. (3x) Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine! All through the night, I m gonna let it shine. (3x) Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine! 2015 Stewardship: Feed Your Faith Call to Offering [Our pledge total for 2015 thus far is $133,990 from 55 households thanks! The average pledge total per year for the last three years was $159,290. If you ve not had a chance to fill out your 2015 Feed Your Faith Pledge, please find a card in the pew backs.] 5
The Offering of Gifts [Broadway is committed to the financial support of its identity, vision, and ministry by tithing. Consider making an offering this morning of 10 percent of your income from this past week.] The Offering of Music The Presentation of Offerings *Doxología... (tune # 95) A Dios el Padre Celestial Al hijo nuestro Redentor Y al eternal Consolador Unidos todos alabad. *The Prayer of Dedication Love has never cared about my schedule. It just barges in whenever it wants. ~Miriam Makeba The Great Thanksgiving and Holy Communion God be with you. And also with you. God calls you by name and claims you. God gives you an identity that comes before any other: beloved, God s own child. This God is the one revealed in the stories of our scripture and faith tradition, the one who orders the creation, the one who calls people from unlikely places, the one who changes names to reflect the covenant relationship that says you belong to me. This God is the one who sent a baby to be born in obscurity. The angel named Gabriel told Mary that she carried this baby who would be called Emmanuel God-with-us. The Spirit of God told Joseph that he would name the baby Jesus the one who saves. This Jesus grew to be named messiah and king by those who followed him, and troublemaker and traitor and heretic by those in power who were threatened by him. 6
This same Jesus named ordinary bread his body and a cup of wine his blood, and the friends with whom he shared it gave thanks to God, and passed it around a table where they uttered the names of those for whom they prayed. This same Jesus was named a criminal by the power of the state, and was killed in state-sanctioned violence. This same Jesus died, was buried, and his friends named their grief and loss. And then some of the friends walked along a road on the way to Emmaus, where he appeared alive again. Some other friends saw him on the seashore, alive again. And yet other friends experienced him alive again in an upper room, speaking peace to them. Generation after generation, the name Jesus also became the Christ the holy anointed one, the chosen one, the one meant to bring reconciliation with God and all of God s creation. And so: we remember his life, his name, his power. We share again the gift of life-giving bread and the cup of love poured out. We pray that the Spirit of God enliven this bread and cup for us, that they may be named more-than-ordinary; heaven-to-earth; holy food. Amen. [The bread and cup are shared.] Keep on going, keep on insisting, keep on fighting injustice. ~ Mary Church Terrell Announcements, News of the Congregation, and Sign-ups Benediction *Singing Together This Little Light of Mine... text below This little light of mine, I m gonna let it shine, (3x) Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine! Hide it under a bushel? No! I m gonna let it shine. (3x) Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine! All through the night, I m gonna let it shine. (3x) Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine! 7

Message from the Relationship Builders Team... In Broadway UMC s sanctuary the trickle of water from the baptismal accompanies quiet prayer. The diverse family that is BUMC lives into Brave Space, our 2015 theme. We intentionally question and shake up our routine to bring justice ministry. We are not afraid to learn and we constantly grow and change. We are a reconciling and anti-racist congregation. For us this goes beyond statements. In seeking to dismantle racism we dismantle the way we worship and organize ourselves. We commit to shared leadership between our called and appointed co-pastors and our large lay leader team. We open gatherings with a welcome statement specifically naming us in our diversity as beloved. We use inclusive language, celebrate weddings for our family of all genders and sexualities, hold each other accountable to radical welcome, meet in racial caucuses, and buckle down for the hard and painful work at the cross sections of injustice. As many of you know, this is Pastor Lois last season with us and we want to be open and transparent with you regarding the appointment process. We are committed to the congregation that we are working collectively as a team along with both our Pastors and with the District Superintendent to make sure that WE continue to journey together and living the brave space. Since we are from every theological location, we want to update you on the process on appointing a new pastor. We wanted to share words from our Bishop, Sally Dyck, regarding the appointment process and process of clear opens: The overall goal in appointment-making is to match clergy s gifts, experience and needs with a congregation for missional reasons. Appointment-making is an art and not a science because there are many factors that go into appointment-making. We all recognize that there are other factors than missional ones that impact itinerancy, such as the level of financial support, spouse s employment, ages of children, etc., which we try to take into account. Consultation is the key foundation to a missional match. Throughout the year, the district superintendent is in consultation with both clergy and congregations to determine the gifts and needs of both. Written profiles are essential and are intended to be updated each year. When a change in appointment has been determined, the district superintendent has another opportunity to determine the needs of the congregation. When clergy s intentions or needs change, it s critical that contact is made with the district superintendent so he/she has that information. Consultation is, in a sense, on-going. So what happens when the cabinet comes together to make appointments? The church that is open is described by the district superintendent to the cabinet, highlighting strengths, struggles, opportunities and specific needs for clergy leadership. Following the description, a list of clergy is generated by all the cabinet members who suggest clergy on his/her district or any other that comes to mind in light of the description. In order to make good missional matches, it s important to broaden the list of potential clergy for any open church. Therefore, in early January an will go out to all active clergy announcing the 10 [continued on following page ]
churches where a change of appointment has already been announced (mostly through retirements). I call these clear opens. When this list comes out, it will give a brief description of the church and an invitation for clergy to let their district superintendent and the district superintendent of the church know that he/she is interested in being considered for that church, citing how one s gifts match the description. The district superintendents will bring all the names of those who indicate their interest in a given open church to cabinet. The district superintendents will also bring their own lists of names (which they always do in appointment-making). In addition to these two lists of names, the cabinet together usually generates more as it discerns the congregation s needs. Names, then, are considered through all three avenues. The selection process occurs through holy conferencing; prayer and dialogue. Each appointment is made in prayer for the clergy on the list as well as the congregation, seeking God s guidance and wisdom as we consider the congregation and each clergy on the list. Throughout the process the Relationship Builders want you to know that we are here for you to support, listen, answer any questions you might have regarding this process. Also, we promise to keep you, the congregation, updated until an appointed pastor has been made. Thank you, Relationship Builders Team Aaron Andersen, Christopher Lewis (chairperson), Victor Poncé, Anna DeShawn Rainey, Keri Rainsberger, Elina Rodriguez, Sheila Ashby Schultz 11

Project Fierce s mission is to reduce LGBTQ youth homelessness in Chicago by providing transitional housing and support services to homeless LGBTQ young adults. Since launching, PFC s membership has tripled in size, it has obtained non-profit status, successfully raised a third of its first year s operating budget and has received a great deal of community support. It has connected with fierce activists and community organizations, engaged in extensive research on funding and affordable housing and has been featured by a variety of media outlets. Project Fierce also mentions: it also had loads of fierce fun at some fabulous soirees organized by our volunteers and community partners! But Project Fierce s primary goal remains: to purchase a foreclosed building to convert into transitional housing! To meet its goals, Project Fierce needs the help of all of you and your networks to do it. Visit for more information. Or just catch up with Jackie after church and ask: how s it going and how can we help? Mission Minute Sunday is February 8, but you can donate throughout the month make checks out to Broadway and designate your check or envelope Project Fierce or February Mission Minute.
