Troparion: The divine image was faithfully preserved in you, O mother,* for taking up the Cross, you followed Christ.* By your deeds you have taught us to see beyond the flesh, which passes,* and care for the soul, a thing immortal.* And so, O venerable Mary,* your spirit rejoices with the angels. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever and ever. Amen. Kontakion: Once you were filled with every impurity,* now through repentance you have been revealed as a bride of Christ,* following the angelic life, you crushed demons with the weapon of the Cross.* Therefore, O glorious Mary, you have been shown to be a bride of the kingdom. For if the blood of goats and bulls, with the sprinkling of the ashes of a heifer, sanctifies those who have been defiled so that their flesh is purified, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to worship the living God! Please gather your children to hold candles for the Gospel. Alleluia Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! verse: Your mercies, O Lord, I will sing for ever; from generation to generation I will announce Your truth with my mouth. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! verse: For You have said: Mercy shall be built up for ever; in the heavens Your truth shall be prepared. (Psalm 88:2,3) Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Gospel Mark 10:32-45 Prokeimenon You, O Lord, will guard us and will keep us* from this generation and for ever. verse: Save me, O Lord, for there is no longer left a just man. (Psalm 11:8,2) Epistle Hebrews 9:11-14 Brothers and Sisters, when Christ came as a A t that time, Jesus took the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them; they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death; then they will

Then Jesus said to them, The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared. When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to temple and spiritual paradise, virgins pride and boast, from whom God is made flesh and became a little Child; and He who is our God before all ages, He made your womb a throne, and He made it wider that all the heavens. In you, O Full of Grace, all creation rejoices. Glory be to you. Communion Hymn Praise the Lord from the heavens;* praise Him in the highest. (Psalm 148:1)* The just man shall be in everlasting remembrance;* of evil hearsay he shall have no fear.* Alleluia, alleluia,* alleluia. (Psalm 111:6) Alleluia, alleluia,* alleluia. 3 COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS When it all began With our 50th Anniversary right around the corner, on the weekend of June 2, 2018 (HOLD THE DATE), I would like to share with you some of the memories of how it all began. Stories that have been previously published give us a glimpse of what was, and there are other stories I have heard from parishioners at meetings or through casual conversation. I promise you that the story of St. Stephen s is filled with drive, spirit and strength of those twenty-seven founding families, clergy and religious. And yes, there is something very special about St. Stephen s. The St. Stephen s Book chronicles the history of our parish from 1967 to The history book is beautifully written and documented. It is filled with information and photographs that make you feel the love of those who brought the book to life. I will use wording from the book from time to time because those words best describe the why, the how and the emotion of the journey. With the growing number of Ukrainian Catholics living in south Calgary there was a need to establish a new Ukrainian Catholic Church. In May 1967 Bishop Neil Savaryn approved the establishment of a mission. To preserve the name of the first Ukrainian Catholic church in Calgary ( ), the mission was named St. Stephen s Mission. Father Phil Shinduke was appointed part time pastor and the facilities at St. James Hall (Roman Catholic Church) were made available. This is similar to what we now do for St. Basil s. On June 5, 1967 the small community of 14 Ukrainian families attended the first Divine Liturgy at St. Stephen s Mission. 1968, 50 years ago, St. Stephen s was awarded full parish status and Father Martin Greschuk was appointed as first pastor. The first Parish Council was formed in 1969: Walter Krysak - President, Ed Sakundiak - Vice-President, Orest Sachkiw - Treasurer, Stan Kwasniowski - Secretary, Orest Demco, John Zuk, Jerry Jumaga Directors. The success of our parish is a reflection of us all past, present and future. My hope is that by starting to tell the story, you our parishioners will come forward with your stories to share. So until next week God Bless Laurie Kindrachuk, editor Contact me: laurie.kindrachuk@shaw.ca Cell: Father Martin Greschuk, first Parish pastor LENT 8:30am for the repose of the soul of +Nancy Korchinski 10:30am for the repose of the soul of +Joe Ewanchyna 5:00pm for the intentions and needs of all parishioners Monday, April 3: Tuesday, April 4: Wednesday, April 5: 7:00pm - Pre-sanctified Liturgy for blessings and keeping you in our prayers for Walter Kmet Thursday, April 6: Friday, April 7: 10:00am (Westview) for the intentions and needs of all parishioners 7:00pm Pre-sanctified Liturgy for the repose of the soul of +Joe Luzney Saturday, April 8: 9:00am for blessings and congratulations on the 14 th Anniversary of Ordination for Fr.
