1 January 20, 2019 ~ 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time A Message From Our Pastor There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone." (1Cor 12:4-6) These words of St. Paul sound like a contradiction to everything we are told in this world. From the very beginning of our life, we are taught that our effort, skills and cleverness will make our future. It looks like a good recipe for a successful life that will take us to the top of the world. But, St. Paul rejects this approach. "It is not me, it is not I, but every good deed happens in God and by his Spirit." Is this a lesson of humility? Not really. If we use only what is ours, then sooner or later we will face the fruit of being separated from God fear. But if we see ourselves in union with God, then we have a peace that lasts and makes us truly children of God. He gives us every single day to be with Him in every moment of that day. In Christ's Peace, Fr. Marek Pax Christi Parish Ministries Retreat POSTPONED The retreat scheduled for Saturday, February 2nd has been postponed until Fall Please consider attending our Lenten Parish Mission with Fr. Jacques Philippe on Sunday, March 24th through Wednesday, March 27th. More information about the mission will be coming soon. For more information on these and other events, go to

National Collection for Latin America Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Our parishes will be conducting the national collection for the Church in Latin America the weekend of January 26/27, Last year, when Pope Francis opened registrations for World Youth Day in Panama, he said, WYD is for the courageous! Not for young people who are searching only for comfort and who withdraw whenever difficulties arise. Do you accept the challenge? (Message for the Thirty-Third World Youth Day, February 11, 2018). Pope Francis echoed Jesus call for young people to encounter one another and to experience the beauty of the Church. Young people are the future of our Church. We have a responsibility to support them as they grow in faith. You have helped young people accept the challenge to grow in faith by your ongoing support for the Collection for the Church in Latin America. Your generosity is helping the young people of the Archdiocese of Panama build relationships with one another, with their peers throughout Latin America, and with the rest of the world as they prepare for World Youth Day This is a tremendous event in the life of the Church, and these young people are now experiencing it to the fullest! You have given them the opportunity to grow as leaders and to develop missionary hearts. Please be generous in this collection. Take this opportunity to share your faith with young people in Latin America and the Caribbean. Your support will truly make a difference. Thank you and God bless you. 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time -2- January 20, 2019

Music Ministry Ordinary Time begins on the Monday following the Baptism of the Lord (which takes the place of the First Sunday in Ordinary Time). This Sunday, the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, recalls the miracle of the Wedding at Cana. Originally, the Epiphany celebration encompassed three manifestations: 1. Christ revealed to the Gentiles via the Magi 2. Christ baptized and revealed as the Son of God 3. The miracle of water made wine and the public revelation of Christ's divine power Music can set a liturgical environment in the same way that liturgical colors and decor enhance the liturgical season. One way to begin doing this is to begin with three Mass settings a year. The first is a musical setting for Ordinary Time. This would be something that would be flexible enough to accommodate a variety of ensemble arrangements, from a single cantor to a choir, but presents itself as simple and intuitive, yet worthy of the temple. For this Ordinary Time we will be switching the Mass setting to the Mass of St. Mary Magdalen from the Pew Missal. The winter Ordinary Time season is not a long season, so it is not ideal for introducing a new Mass setting. The summer Ordinary Time season is better suited for that. Then select two other settings: one that compliments the penitential seasons of Advent and Lent, and one that expresses the exuberant festivity of Christmas and Easter. Emmet Cahill Concert Emmet Cahill, award-winning Irish tenor and principal singer with the popular Irish music show Celtic Thunder, will present a concert at Light of the World Catholic Church on Tuesday, February 12th at 7:30 p.m. This is a wonderful way to treat your loved ones to a pre-valentine s Day concert! Emmet will perform songs from his brand-new album of traditional Irish folk songs and ballads, as well as well-loved church hymns and Broadway favorites. Tickets are $30 - $45 and may be purchased online at or at the Light of the World Parish Office, W. Bowles Ave., Littleton, CO / Pax Christi Catholic Church Littleton, CO

4 Pray the Rosary Knights of Columbus Stewardship Award for Graduating Seniors The Knights are offering a 4-year scholarship of $750 per year ($3,000 total) to a graduating high school senior registered as a member of Pax Christi Parish. The applicant shall be an active member in the church and/or community during the 2018/ 2019 school year. The Knights wish to encourage the youth of Pax Christi Parish to find value and reward in living a life of stewardship and in helping others beyond their high school years. Scholarship criteria and applications are available upon request by sending an to alanb840@gmail.com or calling Alan at The applicant must file a complete application to be received no later than March 8, If you have any questions please contact Alan Brown at Starting this month, we will pray a Rosary each weekend, 20 minutes before the start of Mass. Please consider arriving early so we may pray to our Blessed Mother. And, if you have a special intention, this is the perfect time to come and ask Our Blessed Mother for her help with taking our prayer requests to her son, our Lord Jesus Christ. We are looking for parishioners to help lead the Rosary at each Mass, please contact Shannon and Gloria McCubbin at , if you are interested. The Fifteen Promises of the Blessed Mother for Praying the Rosary 1. Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the rosary, shall receive signal graces. 2. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the rosary. 3. The rosary shall be a powerful armour against hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies. 4. It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will left them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means. 5. The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the rosary, shall not perish. 6. Whoever shall recite the rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice, he shall not perish by an unprovided death; if he be just he shall remain in the grace of God, and become worthy of eternal life. 7. Whoever shall have a true devotion for the rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church. 8. Those who are faithful to recite the rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and the plentitude of His graces; at the moment of death they shall participate in the merits of the saints in paradise. 9. I shall deliver from purgatory those who have been devoted to the rosary. 10. The faithful children of the rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in heaven. 11. You shall obtain all you ask of me by the recitation of the rosary. 12. All those who propagate the holy rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities. 13. I have obtained from my Divine Son that all advocates of the rosary shall have for intercessors the entire celestial court during their life and at the hour of death. 14. All who recite the rosary are my sons, and brothers of my only son Jesus Christ. 15. Devotion of my rosary is a great sign of predestination. 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time January 20, 2019

5 Liturgy Are you in it? Alleluia it is an antiphon sung before the Gospel and is an answer to the verse taken from the Psalm. Alleluia is widely present in the liturgy of the Eastern Church and is used many times during their celebration. In the Western Church, the same acclamation was already in the time of St. Augustin and the Christian part of Africa. There is no information about Alleluia in the churches of Mediolanum or Spain and Gallia. We have some information about it from the 4 th century in the time of Pope Damasus I. It was Pope Gregory the Great that introduced Alleluia to the Liturgy year round, except for Lent. Alleluia has a paschal character and is related to the Easter Mystery. It is based on the joy of resurrection and expresses it, under the influence of the Eastern Churches, mostly Syrian, Greek and Byzantine. Because of them, we have the procession with the book of Gospels and the Alleluia itself was a prelude for it. It reminds people that Christ, King and Savior, is with us. Therefore, verses used for this acclamation emphasized the majesty of Christ. In time, this acclamation became more artistic. Many different composers prepared special music that was supposed to help people understand the mystery of the celebration. It is very characteristic that the last Alleluia sung in the liturgy had a special extension for the last letter a and was given an expression of endless praise to God. (St. Augustin mentioned this in his homily: Sermo 243,9) Since the 9 th century, we can see the growth of Alleluia s melodies. Texts use for them had been changed. From the 9 th century through the 13 th century, the majority of the verses were written in prose with a specific rhythm. It is a time when we created many different sequences included in the missal. Pope Pius V reduced the number of sequences. The post Trent missal has only 4 sequences. 1. Victimae paschali laudes written by Wipo in 912 a.ch. The main theme of it is Christ was sacrificed as our Passover." 2. Veni Sanctae Spiritus written by Stephen Longton in 1228 a.ch. It was written for Pentecost and is also called the golden sequence. 3. Lauda Sion written by St. Thomas Aquinas before 1274 a.ch. 4. Dies irae written by Thomas from Celano before 1260 a.ch. Pope Benedict XIII added the fifth sequence: Stabat Mater and it came from the Franciscan tradition from the 13 th century. Our modern Roman Missal has all those sequences, except one - Dies irae - which the less related to the Paschal Mystery. In the liturgy, we sing the sequence during Easter, Pentecost (obligatory) and Corpus Christi. Point Men Point Men is a men's fellowship and faith formation group that meets on Fridays at 6:00 a.m. This past week we watched the Kapuan's Men Stewardship series, Week 5, regarding prayer. Father Emil Kapaun was a chaplain in the Korean war who spent himself in total service to God. We are learning valuable virtues and stewardship from Father Kapaun's life of service. In week 5, we as a group discussed many items including scheduling time to pray and making a commitment to pray daily. It comes down to answering the question, "How do I use the Lord's gift of our time?" We go to the gym because we know that if we are consistent you will start to see results. Prayer is similar, if you keep at it your relationship will get better and your outlook will change significantly. This week we will watch the formed.org video on Bishop Carrol football. The trailer is as follows: Christian formation is about equipping us for our eternal destiny: heaven. This story focuses on one football team that seeks to form its players to be great Catholic men, and how one former player in particular made a lasting impact on future players and on the world at large. God Bless and hope to see you Friday. Alan Brown / Pax Christi Catholic Church Littleton, CO
