1 November 4, 2018 ~ 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time Which is the first of all the commandments? (MK 12:29) A Message From Our Pastor The answer seems to be so obvious. Of course, it is the commandment of love. And the majority of Catholics would be able to say it without any hesitation. But do we really believe that it is the first commandment? You shall love your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, with all your strength - what does it really mean? In our world, this one word - love probably suffers the most. We use it for everything, beginning with our pets through the food we eat and ending with our relationship with God. The same love, but at the same time different. Biblical love means being responsible for somebody or something. To love God means being responsible for my relationship with God. In this relationship I have to do everything to be with Him. I give Him my time, my talents, my duties, myself. Everything else in my life must be after Him. So, do you love God? In Christ's Peace, Fr. Marek Pax Christi Marriage Retreat Staying Connected From I Do and Beyond Saturday, December 1st 9:00am to 4:00pm in the Great Hall How do you as a couple stay connected after I Do? 2 Ministry Reflection My own education as a Catholic might have ended when I graduated from High School. My parents sent me to CCD classes for all twelve years I was in school. And that was that. Many years later, my education suddenly, delightfully, unexpectedly resumed, and for that I am so thankful. God is good! When my husband began RCIA classes a few years ago, he would come home each week with so many questions! He hoped I would have the answers. Most of the time I didn t, but it challenged me to try to find them. After all, I was the Catholic in the family and he was counting on me! As he progressed through the RCIA program, we made new friends at our parish, attended Mass each week on a regular basis for the first time in our marriage, and came to realize what a deep and rich faith Catholicism is, how much there is to know. Our parish at the time was small and it wasn t long before I was asked to assist with organizing and facilitating a women s ministry. That s when I discovered I wasn t the only adult that wanted to learn more about the Bible, the Church, and her teachings as an adult. It s crucial we teach the catechism to our children and kindle a faith in God in their hearts, but they learn these things as children. It s been a blessing to discover that our spiritual growth isn t meant to end at Confirmation or when we graduate and leave home. How can we say we love God if we don t know Him or His commandments? How can we share our faith and the Gospel with our children and our neighbors if we don t understand them ourselves? We must continue to educate ourselves as adults in order to continue to grow in faith and knowledge! How do we do that? One way is to make use of the many high quality Catholic study programs that are available on a wide variety of subjects. We re fortunate that Pax Christi has multiple programs offered at various times so as to reach as many people as possible. If we had more study leaders, the Parish could offer even more. I m not an expert on Church teaching or Biblical studies, but I've been blessed with the time and opportunity to coordinate and facilitate some of these studies. With these programs, I m a fellow learner. It s amazing to see the Holy Spirit at work in a small group, and wonderful to share Aha! moments with my brothers and sisters in Christ. Pray that your heart will be open to using your gifts to serve in a ministry at Pax Christi. There s no better way to love and serve the Lord, than to love and serve one another. Ann Lamb Parishioner Since 2016 Sunday Petition For the grace to see and love each person as a neighbor like ourselves, including the unborn, the outcast, the burdensome, the stranger, and the criminal. We pray to the Lord. ************************* Intercessory Prayer That we, who all have one Father, may build a society that treats the unborn, the inconvenient, and the burdensome as brothers and sisters. We pray to the Lord. You may name Pax Christi as a beneficiary of your IRA or other qualified retirement benefits. First, to make a charitable gift from your retirement plan, simply visit click the Bequest Language and Tax IDs page and find the parish sample bequest language form that has the parish Tax ID # at the bottom of the form. Second, obtain the beneficiary form from your retirement plan administrator and affix the parish name and Tax ID # on the form and indicate the dollar amount or percentage of your choosing. For more information, contact the Office of Planned Giving at (719) St. Elizabeth s Pantry In Douglas County, 10% of our neighbors must choose between paying rent, heating their home, or feeding their children. Our parish s pantry is open to individuals and families twice monthly, enabling visitors to shop for nonperishable foods, toiletries, and cleaning supplies. Most of our visitors are the working poor who struggle making ends meet. A few are transient homeless. All of our visitors are grateful! HOW CAN YOU HELP? Volunteer: Staff the pantry. Sort donations. Host a food drive. Donate: Purchase items. Give a monetary gift. Pray: "May God guide the feet of our St. Elizabeth's Pantry visitors as they journey towards selfsufficiency. May the non-perishable foods they receive fill their stomachs. May the loving support they receive from the pantry volunteers fill their hearts." 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time -2- November 4, 2018

4 14th Annual Thanksgiving Basket Drive The Knights of Columbus are collecting donations through November 16th for Pax Christi's 14th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner Basket Food Drive. Last year, Pax Christi Parishioners successfully donated over 500 Thanksgiving dinners to families in need throughout Colorado! The Knights will be signing up volunteers for food donations after each Mass. Please reserve Saturday, November 17th for families to join the Knights to assemble and deliver food baskets to various charities in Colorado. There are two ways to donate: Purchase your own ingredients (see shopping list) and assemble the dinner for direct delivery on November 17th. Or make a suggested donation of $50 to the Knights. Funeral Coordinator Needed The coordinator needs to be a person who is comfortable interacting with church and pastoral staff, funeral home professionals, and bereaved family members; a person who is detail-oriented and possesses good time management skills. Duties are to assist family and funeral home professionals. Time Commitment is approximately 3 hours on day of the funeral Mass. Includes arrival at church one hour before Mass start time, one hour during Mass, and approximately one hour clean-up. Contact Joanne in the parish office if interested at or jlafond@paxchristi.org. Thank you for considering this important ministry. We are approximately 300 baskets short of our goal. Please consider making a basket or monetary donation. Go to: PaxThanksgiving for more information on how to donate and items needed. Liturgy of the Hours (the Divine Office) At Wednesday 9:00 a.m. Mass, Morning Prayer is said as an extension of our worship. Prior to the Second Vatican Council, the Liturgy of the Hours was reserved to clergy and referred to as the breviary. Now the Church invites all to participate in the daily prayer of the church, marking the hours of each day and sanctifying the day with prayer. The Hours are a meditative dialogue on the mystery of Christ, using scripture and prayer. There are five Hours of the Divine Office Office of Readings, Morning Prayer, Daytime Prayer, Evening Prayer, and Night Prayer. There are many books and websites available so you can pray the Liturgy of the Hours. On Wednesday s at Pax Christi, most parishioners use an app to guide their prayers. Please join us on Wednesday morning as we pray Morning Prayer and celebrate the Eucharist together. If your schedule does not permit, choose another time to pray the Hours. Pray without ceasing. ~Lk 18:1 Fifty years ago, Pope Paul VI released Humanae Vitae, July 25, 1968, an encyclical on marital love, responsible parenthood, and artificial contraception. Until the end of 2018, we d like to offer you one significant quote each week of this very short encyclical that you can find on the Vatican website by Googling Humanae Vitae. Responsible Parenthood II.10 With regard to physical, economic, psychological and social conditions, responsible parenthood is exercised by those who prudently and generously decide to have more children, and by those who, for serious reasons and with due respect to moral precepts, decide not to have additional children for either a certain or an indefinite period of time In a word, the exercise of responsible parenthood requires that husband and wife, keeping a right order of priorities, recognize their own duties toward God, themselves, their families and human society. From this it follows that they are not free to act as they choose in the service of transmitting life, as if it were wholly up to them to decide what is the right course to follow. On the contrary, they are bound to ensure that what they do corresponds to the will of God the Creator. 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time November 4, 2018

5 Liturgy Are You In It? Kissing of the Altar. When a priest approaches the Altar, he venerates it by placing a kiss on the Altar. The Altar, during the Liturgy, is Christ himself. This kiss is given to Christ as a sign of praise, glory and respect, but, at the same time, is a sign of humility. This sign came to the Church from the pagan traditions. They kissed the frame of the temple to give their respect and honor to the gods. In the 4 th Century, this sign became common in the Church and one of the people who promoted it was St. Ambrose, saying that an altar is Christ himself. In Ordo Romanum Primum, we read that after bowing in front of the Altar and a short prayer, the Pope kisses the Altar. This kiss was also given to the Book of Gospels, which was placed on the Altar. In the 11 th century, the sign of a kiss was also used after the preface and at the end of the Mass. It always happened on the Altar, the place of the Eucharist. After introducing the relics of the saints in the Altar, the meaning of the sign changed a little bit, emphasizing a sign of greeting given to the triumphant Church in Heaven. The Altar is the center of the Holy Assembly and it receives the higher honor and praise in the church. If the Altar is Christ himself, then He is also the cornerstone that holds the entire Church as one. Incensing the Altar. The incense in the Liturgy comes from the Jewish tradition. In the beginning, this part wasn t practiced in the Church because of its past. Very often, pagans religions forced Christians to give incense to their gods. Tertulia and St. Augustin warned the church to avoid the blasphemy by using incense. In the time of Tertulia, incense didn t have a liturgical purpose, but was used to refresh the place of gathering. As a liturgical piece, incense became common in the 4 th Century. Incense expresses our praise and honor given to God, but it also shows how our prayers rise to Him. A priest, after he kissed the Altar, incenses it and the cross. In this sign he gives glory and praise to Jesus Christ.
