1 January 28, th Sunday in Ordinary Time A Message from Our Pastor In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit; he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are the Holy One of God!" (MK 1:23-24) What an amazing lie. An unclean spirit, in its frustration, suggests that Jesus Christ came to destroy him. The same evil spirit shouts in our time. This time he is using different slogans more universal, more general, more misleading. He knows Jesus Christ is the Holy One of God. He knows Jesus Christ paid a debt for our sins and asked us to answer to His gift of love. Satan s work is more clever and perfidious in our time. He is not afraid to use images of mercy and compassion to trick people. Our Savior, Jesus Christ, doesn t destroy anyone. He came to save us. In His mercy God even saved Satan and his angels. He created a hell for them so they could live in their own desire. In the synagogue, Jesus was the one who respected a possessed man. The unclean spirit took this man s freedom away, but at the same time he is accusing Jesus of bad intentions. The truth is that in God we can find freedom and we shouldn t follow the lie of Satan. When: Friday mornings at 6:00 a.m. Includes breakfast, prayers, inspirational presentation from Formed.org and the Augustine Institute and stimulating discussion after the presentation. Our gathering of men is called the POINT MEN. Men are the leaders of our families and church up front in the battle of the evils of this world. This is an opportunity to learn, to share with other brothers and to gain support and knowledge from others to combat the challenges of life. The POINT MEN are currently studying Who am I to Judge? produced by the Augustine Institute here in Denver. The series lasts until the end of February and discusses relativism and how to address moral issues with family and friends. It helps us to understand the moral truths of the Church. During March, April and May, the Point Men will review Consoling the Heart of Jesus by Fr. Michael Gaitley. This is a retreat format where we ll read from Consoling the Heart of Jesus, answer proposed questions and meet weekly to discuss responses. Contact Dan Donaldson at dandonaldson1@gmail.com or and Alan Brown at alanb840@gmail.com or Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Our parishes will be conducting the national collection for the Church in Latin America the weekend of January 27/28. Although the people are faith-filled, the needs in this region of the world are great and can often seem insurmountable. The distance in rural areas and deteriorated roads make it difficult for some communities to have Mass regularly. Language barriers and lack of resources make catechetical materials difficult to produce. We are called to share our faith with all, and this collection is a prophetic and bold way to do so. In Cuba, in the Archdiocese of San Cristobal de la Habana, the Church is not present in many of the smaller or rural communities. For many years, there were no ministers and there was no mission house not to mention a church building to which the people could turn. The message of the Gospel could not spread, because there were very few messengers to share it and few places where people could go to hear it. But with your support, pastoral agents have received training to bring the Gospel to these areas and neighborhoods. Your support has helped bring people to the Church, through religious education and retreats, and the Church to the people, through evangelization efforts and the repair of church buildings. This has given them the hope and the joy of the Gospel. Please be generous in this collection, and take this opportunity to share your faith with many families in Latin America and the Caribbean. Your support will truly make a difference. Thank you and God bless you. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Michael J. Sheridan Bishop of Colorado Springs Our website. The Diocese is grateful to acknowledge these special benefactors during their lifetimes. And, in conjunction with our mission, this special society provides an opportunity for benefactors to make their philanthropy a perpetual legacy for themselves and an example for their families. It also creates an infrastructure of support that makes our parishes, schools and ministries stronger, sustainable and better equipped to reach future generations.
