1 January 27, 2019 ~ 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time A Message From Our Pastor Now you are Christ's body, and individually parts of it. Some people God has designated in the church to be, first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then, mighty deeds; then gifts of healing, assistance, administration, and varieties of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work mighty deeds? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? (1 Cor 12:27-30) Brothers and sister, we are all individually part of the Church and everybody has ones own place in it. It means you have your own vocation to be in the Church of Jesus Christ with all the talents and gifts which you have received from Him. St. Paul gives us a warning that we should not look at the gifts of others or compare ourselves with them because those gifts are giving individually according our plan that is with God. Look at yourself today and ask yourself a very important question: What is my place in this Church? God definitely gave you a call. Do you hear it and answer it? In Christ's Peace, Fr. Marek Pax Christi Parish Ministries Retreat POSTPONED The retreat scheduled for Saturday, February 2nd has been postponed until Fall Please consider attending our Lenten Parish Mission with Fr. 3 Music Ministry Singing Is Good For You! I have always heard throughout my years in music that singing is good for you. It reduces anxiety; improves circulation and cardio vascular condition; makes one feel a sense of belonging; when you sing with others, your heart beats synch up. The list of benefits can go on and on and, for the most part, I agree. As it turns out, there is scientific evidence for these claims. Daniel Levitin, psychology professor at McGill University and author of This is Your Brain on Music, says that group singing is not only good for the soul, it is good for the body. By analyzing the people s brain activity when they sing together, he s come to the conclusion that feelings of belonging and mood elevation are biologically ingrained to surface with communal singing. Levitin says group singing has been an essential human trait for tens of thousands of years. Singing has always been a community building exercise that everyone participated in. We have mistakenly inherited the idea that singing should be done by specialists while we sit in concert halls and listen politely with our hands folded in our laps. Singing eventually became an exclusionary act instead of a communal one effectively silencing those who did not believe they had a special talent. I hear people say all the time, Oh, I can t sing or I m not good enough to sing, and I really think that s a shame because it goes against our evolution. Levitin points to a wealth of neurological research that suggests our brains release oxytocin when we sing with others. That is a chemical that gives rise to the feelings of togetherness and friendship. Group singing, Levitin concludes, scientifically strengthens a community. Levitin also says that the act of listening when singing in groups causes participants brain responses to synchronize with one another. Singing in choir doesn t just connect us with others, it also has the powerful capacity to elevate our mood. I know from my own experience that I can go into a rehearsal feeling the weight of the world and leave there feeling uplifted and grounded. Levitin explains, the healing potential of singing is due to the deep breathing. As an aerobic activity, singing increases the amount of oxygenated blood rushing to the brain. Research suggests choir singing changes our neurochemistry as well. It increases the body s production of serotonin and dopamine. Dopamine activates the brain s pleasure center, while serotonin is commonly deployed to ward off depression. This is a great time to join the music ministry as we are preparing some beautiful music for the seasons of Lent and Easter. Adults rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 7:15-9:00 p.m. We can especially use mens voices. Come and join us because just like milk, singing does a body good. Ray Ortiz Music Director Holy Hour of Adoration First Friday of Each Month Our next Holy Hour is on February 1st from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in our Chapel Pax Christi Catholic Church Littleton, CO

5 Liturgy Are you in it? Gospel it is the summit of the Liturgy of the Word. In the very beginning of the Church, it was read by a lector, but after few decades it changed and was reserved for a deacon and a priest only. In the Western Church, the meaning of the Gospel was elevated. In Rome, on Christmas Day, it was read by an emperor, the highest and most important person in the Roman Empire. On other days, the Gospel was read by a deacon. He had to go to the pope and kiss his foot and received a special blessing the same time. This blessing continues in our liturgy. The Gospel is proclaimed from the Ambo. A deacon, after receiving a blessing, approaches the altar where the Book of Gospels is placed. Then, with the assistance of two candles and a thurible, he processes to the Ambo. This part of the liturgy has changed very much in history. In some places, during the procession, people sang special hymns and in other places seven torches were used. In the Eastern Church, it was a time when they had all the lights lit. And, in the late middle ages, they used a cross and banners during the procession. After reaching the Ambo the deacon greeted the people: The Lord be with you. He continued with the title of the Gospel and people answered: Glory to you, O Christ. This acclamation was established in the 7 th century and is a part of the Roman liturgy. From the 9 th century, we have a tradition of tracing the sign of the cross on our forehead, and from 11 th century, also on our lips and chest. This sign was related to the meaning that Satan comes and takes the word away from us, so we have to protect this word and be ready to witness it in our faith. The second meaning related to being ready to welcome the word with all our senses, believe in it with our heart, and fulfill it in our life. The thurible in the Liturgy of the Word was used to incense only by a deacon after he proclaimed the Gospel. From the 11 th century, this sign included the Book of Gospels, too, and it was done before and after the proclamation. In the northern part of Europe, this sign was extended and it included the incense of people covered with the blessed incense. During the proclamation of the Gospel, people stood and faced the Book of Gospels. Just before it began, they took off their coats, gloves, walking sticks, weapons. The knights presented their swords as a sign of being ready to defend the Gospel. Some of the documents from the 13 th century maintain that people should listen to the Gospel with bowed heads and hands together. This part of the Liturgy was ended with the words: The Gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ. And people answered: Glory to you, Christ. (Laudate Tibi, Christe). Point Men Point Men is a men's fellowship and faith formation group that meets in the parish hall on Friday mornings from 6:00-7:20 a.m. for breakfast, a video and faith sharing. We welcome all men of the Parish to join us. This past week we continued watching the Kapuan's Men Stewardship series from Formed.org. Father Emil Kapaun was a chaplain in the Korean war who gave his life in total service to God and his men. We are learning about the valuable virtues he exemplified of Hospitality, Prayer and Formation; all necessary for active Catholic Stewardship. In week 7, we studied the need for Formation, the second pillar of Stewardship. This story focused on the Bishop Carroll High School football team that seeks to form its players to be great Catholic men and how one former player in particular made a lasting impact on future players and on the world at large. Come join us next Friday as we watch and discuss Week 8 of Kapuan s Men." Questions? Contact Alan Brown at Pax Christi Catholic Church Littleton, CO
