1 October 14, 2018 ~ 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time A Message from Our Pastor Indeed the word of God is living and effective (HEB 4:12) St. Paul is referring to the word proclaimed by the Apostles. We may get the impression that he is little bit surprised, with a touch a doubt. But, we couldn t be more wrong. St. Paul is actually emphasizing the power of the Word of God. The Word of God is a different type of word. It is not as human words are, but has a power which penetrates our souls. This Word has authority. It is like a shining star in the darkness of the world. Nothing can hide from it and nothing can be spared from it. This Word changes everything and everything exists because of it. St. John began his gospel: In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God. (JN 1:1) In our world where people say a lot of words without meaning and we are flooded with words pushing us to make unconscious decisions, God is the only one who really speaks with us and makes us different, better. He makes us alive. In Christ's Peace, Fr. Marek 14th Annual Thanksgiving Basket Drive The Knights of Columbus are collecting donations through November 16th for Pax Christi's 14th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner Basket Food Drive. There are two ways to donate: Purchase your own ingredients (see shopping list) and assemble the dinner for direct delivery on November 17th. Or make a suggested donation of $50 to the Knights. Please contact Vicky Hensen with any questions or if you d like to help out at vhint06@msn.com or Parish Office Closed Wednesday, October 17th Sunday Petition For the grace to respond to the Lord's invitation to give ourselves away for all who are poor and weak, especially the dying, the forgotten, and the unborn. We pray to the Lord. A retirement asset like an IRA or 401(k) makes an excellent legacy gift to Pax Christi. If your IRA were given to your family, much of the value would be depleted through estate and income taxes. These assets were never meant to be inherited! By designating us as the beneficiary of part or all of your IRA, the full value is transferred to us tax free at your death and your estate receives a charitable deduction. For more information contact the Office of Planned Giving at (719) or visit ************************* Intercessory Prayer That God, who calls us to remove all oppression, will enable our nation to restore equal protection to the lives of children still in their mother's womb. We pray to the Lord. 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time -2- October 14, 2018

World Mission Sunday Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: World Mission Sunday, organized by the Propagation of the Faith, is a day set aside for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church's missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice. This year World Mission Sunday is celebrated the weekend of October 20/21, This year, Pope Francis addresses his World Mission Sunday message to us as we live out the adventure of being children of God. What a wonderful way to imagine the mission we have received from the Lord! It is a revitalizing adventure. When all the children of God, at every stage of life, reflect on the fact that our lives are a mission, our faith remains ever young. As we pray and respond on World Mission Sunday here at home, we share in those celebrations taking place in every parish, seminary, school and convent all over the world. Together with children of God in every corner of the globe, we become voices for mission, providing the prayerful and financial support necessary to bring the Lord s mercy and concrete help to the most vulnerable communities in the Pope s missions. World Mission Day, promoted by the Society of the Propagation of the Faith, is a good opportunity for enabling the missionary heart of Christian communities to join in prayer, testimony of life and communion of goods, in responding to the vast and pressing needs of evangelization. Your support will truly make a difference. Thank you for your generosity in supporting missionaries around the world. Pax Christi Catholic Church -3- Littleton, CO
4 Music Ministry During Ordinary Time in Year B we will highlight passages from the General Instruction on the Roman Missal (GIRM) that pertain to music during the liturgy. The GIRM contains rubrics and instructions (some of them new) for the celebration of the Mass. The first section below is a direct quote from the English translation of the document. The second section is a commentary on the passage. The Functions of the Reader (GIRM #196) Liturgy of the Word The reader reads from the ambo the readings that precede the Gospel. In the absence of a psalmist, the reader may also proclaim the Responsorial Psalm after the First Reading. Commentary: The Sunday readings (including the Responsorial Psalm) are very clearly defined in the Lectionary. Knowing that some congregations may wish to reinforce a psalm/refrain by sequential repetition, or that a parish may want to unify a season with a consistent psalm, the Church allows us to substitute for the specific Responsorial Psalm of the Sunday a Common Responsorial Psalm for the season (including Ordinary Time). This exception clearly does not extend to musical "paraphrases" of the psalms, be they metrical hymn versions or lyric creations of the contemporary singer/songwriters. An example of this would be if the prescribed psalm was psalm 23 (the Lord is my shepherd there is nothing I shall want) and instead of singing that text the song Shepherd me, O God was done in its place. The text must be the Church's as presented in the approved books. The musical choice (within good taste) is ours. If a good setting of the proper (or common) Responsorial Psalm cannot be found or learned, I think it better to recite a correct psalm (as indicated above in GIRM #196) than to sing some individual's "version" of sacred Scripture. Note the use of the new term "reader" rather than "lector." This is perhaps to distinguish the lay minister in a parish situation from the Instituted Lector, an official designation of a seminarian on his way to permanent diaconate or priesthood. Should an Instituted Lector be present in the parish (for example, a seminarian on Christmas break), he should be offered the role of reading at Mass it is his official ministry, much like the Priest, Deacon and Instituted Acolyte have preference over the laity as ministers of Holy Communion. Raymond Ortiz, Music Director / rfortiz@paxchristi.org St. Elizabeth s Pantry In Douglas County, 10% of our neighbors must choose between paying the rent, heating their home, or feeding their children. Our parish s pantry is open to individuals and families twice per month, enabling visitors to shop for non-perishable foods, toiletries, and cleaning supplies. Most of our visitors are the working poor who struggle making ends meet. A few are transient homeless. All of our visitors are grateful! How can you help? Volunteer! Staff the pantry. Sort food donations. Host a food drive. Donate! Purchase extra non-perishable foods. Give a monetary gift. Plastic grocery bags are also needed. Pray! May God guide the feet of our St. Elizabeth's Pantry visitors as they journey towards self-sufficiency. May the non-perishable foods they receive fill their stomachs. May the loving support they receive from the pantry volunteers fill their hearts. 5 Liturgy Are You In It? On our journey through the Liturgy, it is time to look at the elements of the Mass. All of them are present in the Mass for a certain reason and they express the different meanings of our celebration. Processions: The symbol of a procession is very universal. It contains elements reflecting the journey of people through history, our personal journey through life, our journey towards eternity, etc. The universal truth is that man was created to travel, to move, to be on a journey, to be in motion. Only in motion can we reach our goals and share ourselves with others. It is the dynamic reality of our existence and only death will stop it. The entire liturgical procession cannot be an affect or a coincidence. It has to be prepared, made in order. This order reflects the direction of our existence. The holy assembly gathers for a reason and the procession takes place in it. It has to be organized. It is the entrance procession that begins the Holy Mass. The procession begins with the Holy Cross and two candles, then the altar servers, acolytes, lectors, cantor, deacons, including a deacon with the Book of the Gospel, and the priest. The tradition of this procession comes from the 4 th century. After Constantine gave freedom to all Christians, some elements of the Liturgy already accepted traditions from the world. One of them was the procession. In ancient Rome, the empire walked into the pagan temple or to the capitol with a procession. In the 4 th century, popes accepted this solemn entrance as the beginning of the Eucharist. All people gathered in the church were standing as a sign of respect. It was the way to welcome the pope who represents the presence of Christ. The entrance procession is accompanied by a hymn as a sign of the unity of all gathered together. This hymn becomes a prayer of praise we give to our Savior. This first hymn is very important because it prepares us to experience the entire Mystery of Salvation related to the liturgical season. This entrance procession also gives homage to the Altar, therefore, the entire procession bows down before the Altar and the priest will kiss and incense it. Giving praise and homage to the Altar is a way of giving themselves to Christ. It is also a symbol of the unity between things visible and invisible, between earth and heaven.
