1 February 11, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Lent Fast ~ Give ~ Pray Lent is the time before Easter during which the faithful abstain and fast in remembrance of the ultimate sacrifice Jesus made on Calvary. It is a 40-day time of preparation before Easter, the memorial of the death and resurrection of Jesus. There are two main ways Catholics focus on growing closer to God during the Lenten season: abstinence and fasting. Abstinence is the act of doing without. Particular days of abstinence during Lent are Fridays, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Catholics are also encouraged to undertake some sort of personal penance or abstinence. For example, a person may give up his favorite TV show, but if he simply turns the television to another channel, the Lenten penance really does not mean as much. Instead, the person should consider devoting the spare time to prayer or perhaps his family. Fasting is the act of doing with less. In the Catholic Church, those ages must fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On such days, those fasting may eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength. However, together, the smaller meals should not equal a full meal. Eating between meals is not encouraged, but liquids are allowed. It is important to understand that the Church excuses certain people from these obligations. Examples include those who are frail, pregnant or manual laborers. The Church understands that certain people are not able to commit to the Lenten fast. The time of Lent, through fasting and abstaining, may be an important reminder of what it means to suffer. This small suffering should not be met with misery but with great joy as we better understand the incredible sacrifice that Jesus Christ made for humanity. (Catholic News Agency) Ash Wednesday ~ February 14th Mass with Ashes at 6:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. There will not be a 9:00 a.m. Mass Stations of the Cross and Fish Taco Dinner Friday, February 16th Starting at 6:30 p.m. What are Stations of the Cross? The Stations of the Cross are a 14-step Catholic devotion that commemorates Jesus Christ's last day on Earth as a man. The 14 devotions, or stations, focus on specific events of His last day, beginning with His condemnation. The stations are commonly used as a mini pilgrimage as individuals move from station to station. At each station, the individual recalls and meditates on a specific event from Christ's last day. Specific prayers are recited, then the individual moves to the next station until all 14 are complete. The Stations of the Cross are commonly found in churches as a series of 14 small icons or images. The stations are most commonly prayed during Lent on Wednesdays and Fridays, and especially on Good Friday, the day of the year upon which the events actually occurred. After Stations of the Cross, the Knights will be serving their first Lenten Fish Taco Dinner starting at 6:45 p.m. Adults will be served Fish Tacos, Beans & Rice, Chips & Salsa. The kids will be served Mac & Cheese, Chips & Salsa, and Fruit Cocktail. The dinner is free, but donations are greatly appreciated. Please join us for a wonderful evening of prayer and fellowship on February 16th with Stations of the Cross starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Church.

It s a great way to spend time outdoors, meet parishioners and grow veggies/flowers to enjoy all season. An annual garden fee of $40 per plot is to cover the cost of water to maintain the gardens. A meeting is planned on Thursday, March 1 st from 6:30 7:30 p.m. in Room 1 to meet the coordinators of the gardens, go through the expectations and answer questions. If you are interested in gardening, contact one of the coordinators: Bayard at bayardbreeding@gmail.com or Sue at susangiudici@comcast.net. Tips for How to Prevent Items Being Stolen from Your Car Do you want to make your vehicle less attractive to thieves? These tips are intended to be a reminder of measures you can take to prevent your car from being burglarized: Always lock your vehicle Remove valuables Conceal your belongings Remove keys from your vehicle We hope these suggestions will help prevent break-ins. Attention New Parishioners with Celiac-Sprue or Gluten Intolerance One of the challenges of our regular parish life is meeting the needs of all our parishioners. The most important of these are the sacramental ones. One of the recent increased needs has been regarding those with Celiac-Sprue or gluten intolerance. In order to accommodate to these especially at Communion, we have two options for individuals faced with this challenge. We offer a low-gluten host that can be found in the sacristy refrigerator. If you would like one of these, please ask an usher or sacristan for help in finding it. This host will be put in a separate cup within the paten used by the priest to distribute Communion. At Communion time, you will need to find the priest and receive from him. As you approach the priest, please inform him by saying "the low-gluten host, please." He will then give you the Consecrated Host that you had placed in the paten before Mass. If you have a particular sensitivity to even low amounts of gluten, there is a chalice reserved strictly for those with this challenge. It is set aside for those who need it to consume from first. If you need this, please ask an usher or sacristan to set out this special chalice and it will be made available at Communion time. The Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion will stand in front of the altar with this chalice. At the start of Communion time, please go directly to this chalice to consume the Precious Blood. Since you would not be receiving a Consecrated Host, you do not need to remain in line for one. You can skip this line and proceed directly to the chalice. Please make a sign of reverence as you pass by the Host. If you have any questions, please contact Fr. Marek or the parish office. Who: Men of Pax Christi Parish Invitation to the Men of Pax Christi Parish What: Join other men for fellowship to grow their relationship with Jesus Christ and focus on spiritual aspects of each person s faith journey. When: Friday mornings at 6:00 a.m. Includes breakfast, prayers, inspirational presentation from Formed.org and the Augustine Institute and stimulating discussion after the presentation. Our gathering of men is called the POINT MEN. Men are the leaders of our families and church up front in the battle of the evils of this world. This is an opportunity to learn, to share with other brothers and to gain support and knowledge from others to combat the challenges of life. The POINT MEN are currently studying Who am I to Judge? produced by the Augustine Institute here in Denver. The series lasts until the end of February and discusses relativism and how to address moral issues with family and friends. It helps us to understand the moral truths of the Church. During March, April and May, the Point Men will review Consoling the Heart of Jesus by Fr. Michael Gaitley. This is a retreat format where we ll read from Consoling the Heart of Jesus, answer proposed questions and meet weekly to discuss responses. Ministry The purpose of J.O.Y. Ministry for Nursing Care Facilities is to provide a Sunday Communion Service to bring Holy Communion to residents. For J.O.Y. Homebound and Hospital Ministry, communion and companionship are brought to those who cannot attend Mass. These ministers are available for special hospital and home visits when requested. This is a wonderful ministry for those who are fortunate enough to be able to pray with the sick. It is a great comfort and very special spiritual gift to them. We are currently in need of leaders for the Nursing Care and Homebound ministries. Please take some time to prayerfully consider your God given gifts and how you can share them with our J.O.Y. Ministry. We honor God by sharing those gifts through service to the community and all creation. Get involved and serve your brothers and sisters! You are needed. Contact Joanne at our Parish Office at with your questions. Project Linus Project Linus is an organization dedicated to providing warmth and comfort to children going through traumatic times. Blankets are made and donated to various outreach organizations to assist and comfort these children. On Saturday, February 17th from 9:00 a.m. to Noon, Pax Christi will host a community-wide event to make blankets and quilts. Fleece blankets will be cut and tied while others work on various stages of the quilting process. It is a fun time meeting people from the area and making blankets for children. We hope you are able to attend. If you have any questions contact Colette at The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Pax Christi Who we are and what we do The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Pax Christi are parishioners (or Vincentians as we call ourselves) that serve the poor and needy in our area. We meet once a month and also volunteer to go out on occasional home visits. We help with rent, food and utilities and also provide resources for additional services to those in need. It may not be easy to see them, but there are families and individuals throughout Douglas County and our surrounding area who are in desperate need of our love and support. Despite the prosperity of our community, poverty and pain are all around us. Often, St. Vincent de Paul is a lifeline for people struggling to survive. In the spirit of Christ, who leads our ministry, we help our neighbors based on need without judgment. If you would like to share your time and talents with this ministry, please contact us at svdppaxchristi@gmail.com. The Diocese is grateful to acknowledge these special benefactors during their lifetimes. And, in conjunction with our mission, this special society provides an opportunity for benefactors to make their philanthropy a perpetual legacy for themselves and an example for their families. It also creates an infrastructure of support that makes our parishes, schools and ministries stronger, sustainable and better equipped to reach future generations. If you have named your parish, a Catholic school or a ministry of the Diocese of Colorado Springs in your estate plan, or are considering doing so, we invite you to become a member of the Catholic Legacy Society.
