1 January 6, 2019 ~ Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord A Message From Our Pastor The Prophet Isaiah comes to us today with the encouragement, "Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem." (Iz 60:1) Yes, rise up all of you that are with God! There is nothing to be afraid of. If darkness is above you, there is the light of God above it and where the Lord shines. The first reading explains the truth that there is no power bigger and stronger than our Creator. Looking around, we can get depressed when things do not go well. The majority of our news today tells us about terrible things happening in the world. There is always some tragedy, abuse, or misusing of others. But this is only a small part of our world. Above it is Jesus Christ. He was rejected and persecuted, but he won us for his Father. Satan desires to take away any hope from us. He tries to cover us with the darkness of our being here. Jesus Christ is the light that is winning over this darkness. If we are with Him, nothing can take the peace from our hearts. Therefore, we adore our Lord who is with us. We praise Him because the light of life is in us and was given to us in baptism. In Christ's Peace, Fr. Marek For more information on these and other events, go to

2 Pax Christi Parish ~ Winter 2019 Adult Faith Formation Offerings The Path: Understanding & Deepening Your Faith, Part II Do you wonder if there is more to the Catholic Faith than what you are receiving? Do you put the time into coming to Mass on Sundays, but often leave feeling uninspired and maybe even confused? This Study seeks to help Catholics get on the path to better understanding their Faith and through this understanding gain a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church. The Path, Part II dives into topics such as The Church, The Mass, and the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and The Eucharist). Do you know what you believe and why you believe it? Meeting Information: The Study Group will continue to meet on Tuesday evenings, beginning January 15 th from 6:30-7:30pm. There is no charge for this study. Peter: Cornerstone of Catholicism The character of St. Peter is both inspiring and confounding to many of us. How could a stubborn and impulsive fisherman become the rock upon which Jesus would build his Church? Bringing together biblical accounts, historical evidence, Church teaching, classical art, and personal insights, Dr. Tim Gray gives a fresh perspective on Simon Peter that is immediately informative and relevant to our lives. After all, if Jesus could bring out the very best in someone like Peter, then there is hope for the rest of us. Meeting Information: The Study Group will meet on Tuesday mornings, beginning January 15 th from 10:00am to 12:00pm. There are 10 Sessions in this Study. There is a $12 charge for the Study Guide. James: Pearls for Wise Living James is one of the most practical books of the Bible. Like the book of Proverbs, it is a book of wisdom, a collection of teachings on issues faced by ordinary Christians in everyday life. These teachings speak loudly to all of those who feel torn between the competing demands of this world and their faith. This study offers pearls for wise living by applying the wisdom of James to the present day. For anyone who has struggled to live a truly Christian life, James offers a wealth of practical solutions for handling and even sanctifying everyday circumstances. Meeting Information: Thursday afternoons, beginning January 17 th, from 11:30am 1:00pm. There are 10 sessions in this Study. The cost of the Study Guide and online video access is $25. For more information about any of these offerings, please contact Ginger Giesen, Director of Adult Catechesis at jgiesen@paxchristi.org or ** Registration prior to the beginning of each of the Studies is important to be sure all materials and space are available. We Serve God by Serving Others Pax Christi Outreach Ministries Christ has no body now on earth but ours; no hands but ours; no feet but ours. Ours are the eyes through which the compassion of Christ must look out on the world. Ours are the feet with which He is to go about doing good. Ours are the hands with which He is to bless His people. Lord, help us to truly be your disciples. Holy Spirit, guide our eyes, our hands, our feet, and our hearts as we serve your people. ~ adaptation of the Prayer of Saint Teresa of Avila Whether it s a meal for a grieving family, a bagged lunch for the homeless, a prayer for the sick, a prayer shawl for the suffering, food for the hungry, or financial support for the struggling, the Outreach Ministries at Pax Christi serve those who are in need in our parish and in our community. Visit the Information Wall in the Great Hall or our Pax Christi website to learn more about how these ministries positively impact the lives of all God s children. 3 Music Ministry Announcing Easter The proclamation of the date of Easter and other moveable feasts dates from a time when calendars were not readily available. It was necessary to announce the date of Easter in advance, since many of the other liturgical celebrations depend its date. The number of Sunday's that follow Epiphany, the date of Ash Wednesday, and the number of Sundays that follow Pentecost are all calculated in relation to Easter. Now a days, calendars give us the date for Easter and the other feasts in the liturgical year for many years in advance. However, the Epiphany proclamation still has value. It is a reminder of the centrality of the resurrection of the Lord in the liturgical year and the importance of the great mysteries of faith which are celebrated throughout the year. The Epiphany proclamation is located in the appendix of the Roman Missal and each year the proper dates for Ash Wednesday, Easter, the Ascension, the Body and Blood of Christ, and the first Sunday of Advent must be inserted into the text. On the Epiphany of the Lord, after the gospel, a Deacon or cantor, in keeping with the ancient practice of Holy Church, announces from the ambo the moveable feasts according to the current year according to the following text. Announcement of Easter and the Moveable Feasts (for the year 2019) Know, dear brethren (brothers and sisters), that, as we have rejoiced at the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, so by leave of God's mercy we announce to you also the joy of his Resurrection, who is our Savior. On the sixth day of March will fall Ash Wednesday, and the beginning of the fast of the most sacred Lenten season. On the twenty-first day of April you will celebrate with joy Easter Day, the Paschal feast of our Lord Jesus Christ. [In those places where the Ascension is observed on Thursday: On the thirtieth day of May will be the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ.] [In those places where the Ascension is transferred to the Seventh Sunday of Easter: On the second day of June will be the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ.] On the ninth day of June, the feast of Pentecost. On the twenty-third day of June, the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. On the first day of December, the First Sunday of the Advent of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom is honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen with our Young Adult Ministry Our next meeting will be on January 11th from 7:00-9:00 p.m. For questions or more information about this ministry, contact Matthew Morrison at mtmorrison91@gmail.com or Intercessory Prayer That our Faith may lead us to the presence of Christ in the sick, the poor, the oppressed, and the unborn. We pray to the Lord. Pax Christi Catholic Church Littleton, CO

5 Liturgy Are You In It? Psalm The second part of the Liturgy of the Word is singing. In the past, there were four different forms of it: gradual, Alleluia, tractus (second psalm) and the sequence. After the epistle, a sub-deacon carried the Cantatorium to the ambo. From there he gave the responsum an answer which was repeated by the people. From the 9 th century, this answer was called graduale. In our Instruction to the Roman Missal, it is called the responsorial psalm. The graduale was sung by a lector and by a deacon until the time of pope Gregory the Great in 593. Usage of the Psalms increased after the heresy of the Gnostics sharing their teaching by singing special hymns. To defend the faith, the Church increased the number of Psalms in the Liturgy. The Holy Assembly participated in this prayer by repeating the answer or the response. This is one of the oldest and most important elements of music in the Liturgy. From the 6 th century, we can see the slow process of removing the people gathered in the Liturgy from singing the Psalms. In the 8 th century, Psalms were performed by a schola cantorum, divided into two choirs singing one after the other. The same process also affected the time and number of Psalms in the Liturgy. Finally, it came to the point that there was only one psalm with only a few verses. The purpose of the Psalms was to teach the basics of the faith kerygma. From the 2 nd century, it was also a poetic way for the faithful to respond to God after listening to His word. Unfortunately, this meaning changed and eventually disappeared after the process that was presented above. The kerygmatic character of the Psalms was slowly removed by meditative character. A variety of melodies and careful performance completely changed the spiritual pace of the Psalms. The renewal of the Liturgy after the Vatican Council brought again the kerygmatic element in the worship space. Our response to the Psalm helps us understand the truth that is in our faith. In our time, the Psalm is led by the cantor which is repeated by the people gathered during the celebration. It is our prayer and hymn of praise. J.O.Y. Ministry (Nursing Home and Homebound Communion) Ministry Leader and Communion Ministers Needed The J.O.Y. Ministry brings communion to the homebound and those in nursing homes.
