3 Welcome to the February Issue of The Hoot Newsletter and thank you for taking the time to check out what s happening here at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church. The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14. Look inside for information on our Ash Wednesday Services and other Lenten offerings, as well as announcements and articles we think you will find of interest. You can stay in touch with us through our weekly s, Sunday announcements, our Facebook page as well as our website at and, of course, our sign out front. 4 Message from our Rector In a season with a Super Blue Blood Moon, it is easy to focus on the extraordinary. The days ahead will have extraordinary times for this parish as we celebrate the Diaconal Ordination of our former Youth Minister, Spencer Cantrell, on Saturday, February 10, at noon at St. John s Cathedral in Knoxville. We will welcome Spencer back to all 3 services on February 11, the Last Sunday in Epiphany. We will then share an early Valentine s celebration by combining it with our Annual Pancake Supper, the last party before the season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 14. Moving from the extraordinary to the more disciplined season of Lent, will be a change and maybe even a challenge. Nonetheless, embracing a change and a challenge has always been the great opportunity Lent provides. Maybe we do not think of our Lenten practice as embracing an opportunity, but it truly is. Rather than considering giving up or even taking on a practice or a discipline, what a difference it makes in our attitude if we regard this as embracing the practice of or the abstinence from our chosen discipline. One practice I embraced a few years back was not turning on the TV or radio for the first hour of the morning. This allows intentional time with God, even as the morning chores of making coffee, feeding animals, and emptying the dishwasher are tackled. If one prefers printed materials, there are several available in the Narthex for focused time with God. If one prefers online methods, consider going to site(s) for daily prayer and reflection time. Through the years there have been more venues added and we provide a brief list with links on the opposite page. The news of the day will still be there after this quiet time with God. Spending such time with God first can change how we hear and respond to the day s news. Let us enter this season of Lent, which begins with Valentine s Day and ends with April Fool s Day, with a renewed attitude, an attitude of embracing a new practice, a new discipline. As we do, let us embrace the opportunity this change provides to be more deeply connected with our loving God. Beloved of our Lord Jesus Christ: The Church invites us to keep a Holy Lent. Lou 4

Go to: This International Aid Agency of The Episcopal Church continues to respond to disasters such as the hurricanes, wildfires and mudslides from the past months as well as helping communities around the world develop clean water and local food sources. If you choose to give something up for Lent, you might want to consider setting aside monies in a Mite Box for Episcopal Relief & Development. We will collect these monies during Easter and send them to this agency that works around the globe to help heal a hurting world. Society of St. John the Evangelist has an online program on The Gospel of John for Lent For this daily interactive offering go to: Mission St. Clare offers the Daily Offices of Morning Prayer, Noon Day Prayer, Evening Prayer, and Compline complete with the assigned readings for the day. They also provide music options if one would like to sing a hymn or canticle as they pray at: They do have an App for smart phones and tablets. Sacred Space offers a single written payer for each day which is translated into 20 different languages. This offering is found at Finally for those who enjoy lively competition while learning more about people who have influenced Christianity enough to be specifically remembered by the Church, Forward Day by Day once again invites us to Lent Madness. 6 Notes From the Music Desk by Bill PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT! Musicians, whether good, bad, or indifferent, have to practice. They must not only learn by experimenting and listening to what the composer or arranger of the piece might have had in mind, but they must also learn how to get the right notes played at the right time. Regardless of what instrument is being played, the process of playing the notes is a process that involves playing passages over and over again until you learn how to reflexively get the right note played at the right time without having to think directly about playing it. Most listeners really don t enjoy hearing the same passage played over and over and over again while these semi-automatic motions are learned. For most instruments, the unwilling listener s problem can easily be solved by going to a different room or out to the grocery store while the musician learns the piece. However, the problem with playing our carillon is quite different. If you practice on the bells in the tower, the neighbors may become quite tired of hearing the same tidbits over and over many times while the carillonneur learns the piece. The solution is a practice keyboard. We now have one of these, custom designed to be exactly like the keyboard in the bell tower. Our carillonneurs can now practice inside without driving the neighbors to distraction with their endless mistakes while they learn. Our new practice keyboard was made by our carillon builders: Meeks, Watson & Company. It uses flat aluminum bars to produce sounds that are like an indoor version of the carillon bells. The sound is much like that of the celesta that small keyboard instrument that plays the opening part of The Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy in The Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky. The sound this practice instrument makes is quite pleasant. We have placed our new practice keyboard in the back corner of the Nave. Stop by after church and have a look at it. Like the keyboard in the bell tower, it has batons that are played with the hands and pedal keys that are played with the feet. 6

7 Spencer Cantrell, our former Youth Minister, will be at St. Francis the Sunday following his ordination (see above). Spencer will be preaching at all three services on Sunday, Feb. 11, at 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served following the 10:00 a.m. service. 7

Saints of St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church Our church started a tradition many years ago of hanging photographs of church members who have passed on. These photos hang on a memorial wall in All Saints House. At our recent Vestry Retreat we noticed we ve not added any photos to our wall in the past several years and would like to catch up as quickly as possible. If you have a loved one who has died and was a member of St. Francis and would like to include them on our memorial wall at All Saints House, please send me a 4 X 6 photo (with the name on the back). 12 ESTRY VIBES The vestry met held it s regularly scheduled meeting during the Annual Retreat on January 20. Our Vestry Officers for 2018 are: Sheila Crane, Treasurer Lenora Corbin, Clerk Deris Bagli, Sr. Warden Sandy Moore, Jr. Warden The 2018 budget has not yet been approved as we are still closing However, the Vestry approved continuation of the 2017 budget for the next month. Please submit pledge cards if you ve not already done so. At the Vestry Retreat we had the opportunity to review and discuss the results from the recent cottage meetings. We are waiting for a few more responses from our online survey. Discussions continue as to how we will use this information going forward. Conversation led to sending some items back to the Master Plan Committee for their evaluation. Stay tuned. 13 Farewell to Ooltewah and St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church Our journey to the Episcopal Church was a convoluted one. Joseph and I were both raised Catholic. When we decided to get married, we asked the priest if he would perform a civil ceremony. He refused because we had both been divorced. So life moved on and we did too Georgia, North Carolina, then Michigan. When his company asked us to move to Chicago in 1985, Joseph opted to take early retirement. We came to Ooltewah, TN and Joseph went into business with a friend manufacturing and selling repair parts for packaging machinery. We started going to a church in Chattanooga where the priest announced no divorced Catholic will ever take communion in his church and I left in tears. Joseph and I had many long talks about our religious future. Joseph stated emphatically that he did not want to become a member of certain churches, so I called Reverend Buckley Robbins and he came to our house for an interview. We joined St. Francis, took some lessons, and had found our church home. That s not the end of my story. We loved Reverend Buckley, but then Reverend Lou came upon the scene. I don t know if it s her passion, her compassion or her courage when her life took an abrupt turn, but something about her helped me have a deeper understanding and relationship with God. I have a better understanding about how God fits into our daily lives and I thank her for that. We are going to miss all the friends we have made over the thirty-two years we have lived in Ooltewah. We make a prayerful request that the road leading to our next adventure is smooth and straight. Sharleen & Joe Rhinock 13
