Message from our Rector In the midst of changes, You, O Lord are our rock and our shelter, Our ever sure foundation. Change is in the air as reflected by the coolness of the mornings this week, which herald the approach of fall. Students have returned to school and are meeting new teachers and taking new courses. The area we call home continues to explode with new houses and businesses. Change is all around us. Over a decade ago, then Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts- Schori addressed the East Tennessee Diocesan Convention gathered in Gatlinburg. At that time, she reminded us that for any organism to survive, life must be able to adapt to change. While change stretches us, it also helps us grow into who God has made us each to be. We, who are grounded in faith and hope, know that God is our constant in the midst of any change life brings. At St. Francis, we are welcoming some exciting changes this fall. Josh Weaver will be ordained a Deacon in God s one holy catholic church on Tuesday, September 4, at St. Paul s Episcopal Church, Chattanooga. After a Sunday back with his sending parish, Grace Episcopal Church, he will join our clergy staff. Truly we are blessed to have Josh with us. Kirsten Herzog is a student at Lee University and granddaughter of Irma and Ed Herzog. A regular attendee of our 10 am service, Kirsten will be helping to develop a Children s Music program at St. Francis. Please see page 16 of this newsletter to learn more about this new offering Kirsten is leading. 4
Dr. Pamela Harris, Professor in the School of Journalism and Communications at Southern Adventist University and professional Organist, will be our supply Organist for much of the fall. Pam was with us a couple of times last spring, and we are looking forward to her being back with us starting Sunday, August 27. We also welcome back our Seminarian, Allison Caudill, who has had a busy summer serving in her sending Diocese of Kentucky. She will also rejoin us on August 27. While all of this is happening, we are aware of changes in our wider community. Hearing from so many who attended the Cottage Meetings last fall, we are now working with Episcopal Church Foundation on a feasibility study to assess our ability to address the needs identified at St. Francis. We are considering exterior repairs to our current church building and the possibility of adding new space to the building. In the weeks ahead, each of you will be invited to read and respond to the proposals being considered. Watch for announcements, s and mail for more information on these proposals. In this time of change, let us remember that God is ever with us. Let us continue to pray for God s wisdom and discernment to guide us, Christ Jesus love and courage to lead us, and the power of the Holy Spirit to enable us to do this faithfully and to the glory of God s Holy Name. Lou 5
The Rt. Rev. Brian Cole, Bishop of East TN, has assigned Joshua Weaver to serve as Deacon for St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church Following his ordination on September 4, 2018, Josh Weaver will serve as Deacon at St. Francis in Ooltewah, TN. Originally from Grace Episcopal Church in Chattanooga, Josh has recently completed a two-year vocational diaconate formation and training program in Sewanee, TN. He has also finished the four-year Education for Ministry (EfM) program that is offered by the University of the South. Additionally, Joshua has completed two units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) training at Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton, GA and holds a Master of Public Administration Degree in Emergency Management from Anna Maria College in Paxton, MA. 10 ESTRY VIBES The St. Francis Vestry met on August 20. Thanks to the foresight and generosity of Charles Park, we have received a generous gift from his estate for which we are truly grateful. The Vestry and Finance Committee are considering current projects and needs of the church and how to best use this financial gift. We are receiving bids for the needed exterior repairs of the current building. Additionally, we will be entering the feasibility stage of our master plan, led by the Episcopal Church Foundation. During this stage, we will assess our readiness for a capital campaign. Depending on the results of the feasibility study, we will either: a. Do the needed exterior repairs; or b. Include these repairs together with the total cost of a new nave to be covered by our capital campaign. The Church Workday is September 15 from 9-12 in preparation for St. Francis Day October 7th. A Project list and Signup is in the narthex. If you can t make it on the 15th, check out the Project List and let us know what you can do and when you can come to do it. If you are interested in serving on the Vestry, please talk with Lou or any current member of the Vestry. We are happy to answer any questions you may have. The next Vestry Meeting is September 24th at 6:15 pm. All are welcome. 10

A few highlights from last year s event... 13
E Y C A new school year also means a fresh start for EYC. This summer we participated with other Episcopal youth from around the area in the first ChattEY Mission trip to Heifer Ranch in Arkansas. What an amazing time we had together! Energized by that sharing, there is already a full schedule for ChattEY for fall 2018 spring 2019 on the facing page. Because ChattEY has enabled so many connections with other Episcopal Youth, we have decided to invite 3 rd - 5 th graders to start building a wider community as well. To do this, we have planned a Carnival to be held at St. Peter s Church on Saturday, September 15 from 1 3 pm. Each church is asked to have a booth at the Carnival staffed by the youth of that church. In order to plan for the St. Francis Booth at the Carnival, our youth will gather on Sunday, August 26 after the 10 am service. At that time, we will decide what we want to offer at our booth. All of St. Francis Youth, from 6 th 12 th, grade is needed for this fun event. At our August 26 gathering we will also make plans for the rest of September and October for St. Francis EYC. With St. Francis Day and the Bishop s visit coinciding on the first Sunday in October, there are many ways we can be involved in our signature event, the Blessing of the Animals. We are a church where youth are actively involved in helping lead worship. Anyone who has not had the opportunity but would like learn more about being Crucifer, Lay Reader, Usher, Greeter and/ or Server, please let Lou or one of our Verger s know. We would love to have you join us in these important parish ministries. Lou 14

Children s Ministry This summer, Kirsten Herzog initiated our first ever Vacation Bible School. This wonderful offering was filled with learning, play, and music with children not only from St. Francis, but also from the wider community. All involved found it a time of growing in faith and in friendship. Inspired by this VBS response, the Vestry has agreed that St. Francis should have a Sunday morning program for elementary age children that will include both faith-based lessons and musical offerings. Starting September 9 at 9:00 am, all children in grades K 5 are invited to meet in the Children s Sunday School room and chapel. Most Sundays our gatherings will include a Godly Play based lesson as well as time to make music together. We are blessed that Kirsten Herzog has agreed to help lead our music program with the children. Just as they did after VBS, the children will sing in church at the 10 am service on some Sundays in the Fall semester. The singing schedule will be worked out with the families of the participating children in the coming weeks and then shared with the congregation. In addition to Sunday morning offerings, we also have a new offering from the Episcopal Churches in the wider Chattanooga area for grades 3-5. The first gathering, a Carnival, will occur on Saturday September 15 from 1 3 at St. Peter s Episcopal Church. This Carnival will allow our 3 rd through 5 th graders the opportunity to meet and get to know other young people throughout our area as they play and worship together. See the flier on the facing page for more details. Please share these new offerings with others who have children in these age groups. If anyone would like more information about Sunday mornings at St. Francis and/or ChattEY Jr., contact Lou at Louisatp@aol.com. All are welcome! 16
