2 SS NICHOLAS AND FAITH CHURCH CHOIR The Choir is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music promoting church music to sing with the spirit and understanding also. A strong choral tradition has been held at the church since Victorian times and the current choir of twelve members sing at the weekly Eucharist. The Church is fortunate in still having a SATB 4 part choir not only for traditional and modern hymns, but also to sing the Responsorial Psalm, Communion Settings, and Anthems. Music may range from the Tudor and Romantic periods through to Victorian and 20 th century Anthems, along with modern music settings of hymns and Iona/Taize intonations. A wide variety of music is explored with a repertoire to suite all tastes Choir rehearsals are held twice a week at the Church on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. and Thursdays at 7 p.m. with practices commencing again after the Summer break on Wednesday September 2 nd. There are many up and coming Services from September to Christmas which will offer a wide variety of Choral and Organ music, therefore much practice will be required. Please see the separate list of Services and Music at SS Nicholas and Faith. Should you enjoy singing and wish to develop your own musical skills and sight reading and be part of the choral tradition at the Church, the please come along to a Choir Practice at anytime or contact me on my number below. These would need to be much larger, weatherproof and lit by independent sources. If you are interested please contact the above to take up the challenge. 3 Remembering our Loved Ones CHORAL SERVICES AND EVENTS AT SS NICHOLAS AND FAITH A Service for All Souls Saturday 31 st October 3pm at SS Nicholas & Faith Parish Church, Saltash On Saturday 31st October 2015 at 3pm, we will have the opportunity to gather at SS Nicholas & Faith Parish Church to remember family, friends and all our loved ones who have departed this life. This will be a service lasting approximately 45 mins, and there will be time for prayer and reflection, time to give thanks for all those who have departed this life, and the opportunity to light a candle if you wish in remembrance of your loved one(s). SSNF Church Choir will be providing appropriate music. A warm invitation and welcome is extended to you, your family, friends and neighbours and anyone who wishes to be at this special service. This is a service for all the community. There will be tea and coffee afterwards in the Church Hall. Please contact me if you need any further information. 4 NEW ALLEN DIGITAL ORGAN AT SS NICHOLAS AND FAITH CHURCH The PCC were faced with the decision to meet the cost of a complete overhaul of the gantry tracker action pipe organ, or to invest in an up to date repositioned electronic action organ with greater capacity and improved performance at half the cost of refurbishment to the existing organ. Following advice from a number of Diocesan Advisors and Church organ consultant, the decision was made to invest in a totally new instrument. A full synopsis on the pipe organ or digital organ debate is available from me on request. Funded within a very short time thanks to local benefactors, grants and donations, the Church now has an asset and 3 manual instrument much more amenable to the player and more sympathetic to Congregation and Choir accompaniment alike. In addition to having a wide range of strops for musical expression, it also means that no regular tuning of the instrument will be required in the future, and more importantly future generations will not be subjected to expensive organ overhauls and cleaning which are unfortunately part and parcel of a traditional pipe organ along with rectification of niggling problems. The new organ will be used at Concerts through 2016 and there will also be some organ recitals at SS Nicholas and Faith. More importantly, to general interest from the musicians of tomorrow, the organ can be used to teach and encourage others. A dedication of the new organ will take place during the Songs of Praise Service at SS Nicholas and Faith Church on Sunday 4th October 2014 at 6.30p.m. Christopher Cook. This will be the Saltash Churches Together evening service for October Editor. Attending this time are : Always Chocolate, Alzheimer s Society, Bigplacebythesea, The Candle Works, Cornish Cherrystone Pads, Country Cottage Cermaics, Devonly Crafts, Kerensa Aval, Little Craft Designs, Little Home Bakery, Luminosity Art, Moorstitches, Scatty Bun, Tikityboo Soaps and Bath Bombs, Turned Out Nice and Woods of the West. Refreshments will be served throughout the event, including yummy Bacon Rolls, Light Lunches, Children s Lunch Bags, Cake and Drinks. Our own fundraising stalls will also present such as a Cake Stall, Handicrafts, Brand New Books for all ages, Activity Books, Stationery, Greeting and Christmas Cards. It s going to be a great event so please pop along, it will be great to see you. Entry is free as usual Quiz Night Friday 16th Oct 7.30pm Start St. Stephen s Church Teams of between four to six persons are welcome to enter and be tested out by Quiz Master George Hawke. A fun night of, we ve been informed not too difficult questions, will be had. Entry is 2 per person which includes a cuppa and biccys. Tickets will be on sale from late September, so make a note in your dairy to come, support and enjoy a night of musical entertainment from our town s talented musicians.

5 TOWER REPORT - ST STEPHENS - an update In the last News Letter we reported that F.D. Builders had started work on the tower, and that there would be restrictions regarding access for Health and Safety reasons. On behalf of the Tower Committee I would like to thank you all for your forbearance and patience whilst this work is ongoing. Progress overall has been good and the work has now started on the South Wall of the Tower. You may have seen the abseil crew at work over the last few days. Unfortunately, the inclement weather we have had of late is now starting to have an impact. This is because of the requirement to use Lime Mortar which is notorious for requiring good weather. It is hoped for a break in the weather and that the builders will be able to make good progress. Tickets will be on sale soon priced at 5 each, so watch the pew sheets and noticeboards for more information. A list will also be out for those wishing to produce a dessert for the evening. Tuesday 8 th September Outing to visit St Dominic Church followed by Lunch at the Who d Have Thought It, meeting at the St Dominic at a.m. Transport will being arranged. We have another great selection of traders from across Cornwall and Devon lined up for our next Craft and Gift Fair. Several favourites will be back at our church, as well as many new traders. Do you wish to join in with Christians of other denominations in a range of worship styles and experiences? You could be at risk. of learning from other Christians as to how they go about things!! Saltash Churches Together is a group of four Christian denominations in the town who worship and prayer together at 6.30 p.m. on the first Sunday of each month. This month of September we shall be at Burraton Methodist Church for our service and Annual General Meeting. Will you come and join us????? Confirmation Service a date for your diary On Thursday 1 st October 2015 at 7:00pm there will be a Confirmation Service at St Stephen by Saltash Parish Church to which all are invited. The Church of England says confirmation marks the point in the Christian journey at which a person affirms for themselves the faith into which they have been baptized and their intention to live a life of committed discipleship. This affirmation is confirmed through prayer and the laying on of hands by the confirming bishop. The Church also asks God to give them power through the Holy Spirit to enable them to live in the way of Jesus. Confirmation can be seen as the fulfilment of Holy Baptism. When a young child is christened their parents make the decision for them. In the confirmation service the person makes public their decision and commitment to follow Jesus. This is a marvellous step of discipleship along the Way of Jesus and a great celebration. This will be a very special service, especially for the five confirmands, who would love you to join them and Bishop Chris as they mark this happy occasion. After the service there will be time to talk to the confirmands over refreshments, to renew old acquaintances and to make new friends.
