To be married at St. Bernard, you must be a registered member of the parish, or have an immediate family member who is registered. Pastoral Care The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is celebrated after each weekend Mass on the third weekend of the month. If you are in special need of the Sacrament, please call the parish office. If you are hospitalized or homebound with extended illness and would like a visit, please call our pastoral care director. Dear Friends, As quickly as the Christmas season arrived, it leaves us this weekend with the celebration of our Lord s Baptism by St. John the Baptist. For those who enjoy praying the Luminous Mysteries of the rosary, the Lord s baptism is the first mystery to be prayed. The Baptism of Christ foreshadows our own baptism - our incorporation into His mystical Body. Baptism isn t, perhaps, a Sacrament that we give a whole lot of thought or attention to - many of us were far too young to remember it ourselves. Yet, the importance of this one Sacrament should cause us to bring this great gift of God s grace to our hearts every day. Through our baptism we are configured to Christ, and that grace is always available to us. The question that many of us probably wonder about is: why was Jesus baptized? And why by John? There are several things that point to the answer: (1) By being baptized in the Jordan River, Jesus sanctifies the waters and makes the waters of baptism a place where the Holy Spirit can be manifested. (2) Jesus descent into the waters mirrors His descent among the dead and the destruction over the powers of death. Through His baptism, Christ has given life to all of God s beloved. (3) We remember all too well the sin of our first parents. The Sacrament of Baptism raises us to new life as we emerge from the waters as beloved sons and daughters of the Lord. We are given new life in the Lord through the waters of baptism. (4) This was John s mission what the Father had entrusted to him to do. The power was in Christ, but the action was in John. Of all the Sacraments, baptism has some of the richest symbolism, and it carries a heavy weight of importance because we are born anew, and through the waters of baptism, made holy by Christ Himself, we, like Him, emerge victorious in the life of grace, freed from the clutches of the evil one. It is a wonderful feast to conclude this great season of the Incarnation. After this weekend s celebration, we will return to Ordinary Time until the beginning of Lent, which is marked by Ash Wednesday on March 6th. We re making good progress on the door automation and fire control system projects in the parish center. We re nearing completion of the fire control system installation. After the installation of a few remaining devices, our vendor will begin testing, and the system will then be put into service. The new panel will become the primary panel for the entire building. If an alarm is detected, notification will be sent to our monitoring service, who will summon the fire department. The new system will be tied into the existing system at SSM Health - St. Mary s Adult Daycare Center. If their system goes off, it will notify our system to notify the fire department. We ll finally have some piece of mind that if a fire starts, it will not go unnoticed. The church is the last building to tackle, and our vendor and I are working to formulate a plan for a fire notification system in the church building as well. We re making progress! The HVAC installation at the rectory is also going well. The final two furnaces were installed this past Wednesday, and the new A/C units will be coming soon. We ll still have some A/C work to do on the units at the Atwood Ave. entrance to the rectory, which will be done in the spring. The wood flooring has been installed at the rectory, and it turned out beautifully. We re in the process of moving furniture back into the spaces. When everything is back in its place, I ll snap some pictures and post them here in the bulletin for you to see. It s a huge improvement. Thanks to everyone who participated in the 2018 calendar raffle! The raffle was a great success, yielding a bit over $14,000 for the parish. Thanks for your generosity in making the calendar raffle a success. Tickets for the 2019 calendar raffle will go on sale in early April. I ll keep you informed via bulletin announcements as the time draws closer. Peace, Fr. Michael Agrace Grief Support Groups In February, four grief support programs will be offered at the Agrace Grief Support Center, 2906 Marketplace Drive, Fitchburg. The groups are open to the public. People who had a family member enrolled in hospice care in the past 12 months can attend for free. Fees can be lowered or waived for others, if needed. Bridges Grief Support Group for adults meets February 6 and 20, 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., and February 13 and 27, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. No pre-registration is needed. For details, call (608) or visit agrace.org/griefgroups. Family Grief Support Program is for families with children aged 5 to 18 who are grieving a death. Meets every other Tuesday, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and includes dinner. Pre-registration is required. Adult Faith Formation Opportunities Conversations with David Tuschel. You may have heard someone speak as though science can explain all things and is the only true source of knowledge. Such thinking is really scientism: a philosophical outlook, and not science itself or scientific. Science has successfully explained so much about the material world and physical phenomena. However, there is much about life that cannot be explained by the laws of science alone. -David Tuschel, parishioner of St. Bernard Parish You are invited to a presentation which addresses his narrative into the cultural discourse of Scientific Materialism and its consequences. As a scientist, David brings a unique perspective, and his goal is to reinforce the Natural Law and to question the rationale and logic of current and dominant secular thought. We will meet in Room 1 of the Parish Center on Thursday, January 24th at 6:00pm. The presentation will take place at 6:30pm, followed by questions and answers for those who wish to stay. There is no cost for the evening. Bible Study on the Prophets. This 10-week study takes place on Wednesdays, from 6:00pm - 7:00pm, beginning January 9th. Material cost is $25. The Acts of the Apostles. This 20-week study takes place on Mondays, from 2:30pm - 4:00pm, beginning January 21st. Materials cost is $30. Lenten Study: Fulfilled. This seven week study takes place on Wednesdays during Lent from 1:00pm - 3:00pm and is repeated in the evening from 6:00pm - 7:00pm, beginning Wednesday, March 6th. This series explores the biblical roots of the Catholic faith. It uncovers God s consistent design for our worship of Him and His relationship with us. Materials cost is $25. Please contact Geri at ext. 230 or re@sbmsn.org to register Agrace Hospice Volunteers are needed across Dane County to make companionship visits to local Agrace HospiceCare patients in patients homes, or in nursing homes or assisted living centers. Agrace also needs volunteers to provide hairstyling, hand massages, music performances and therapy dog visits. A volunteer training for these roles will be held February 11, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Agrace in Madison. Volunteers can also help in Agrace s thrift stores, office, kitchen and gardens. A training for these roles will be held February 13, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required for both trainings. Call (608) to complete an application and interview. Hall) 11:00am (Room 1) 3rd Sunday Fellowship Confirmation Class Pornography in Our Culture Before his passing, Bishop Morlino dedicated the weekend of January 19th and 20th as Safe Haven Sunday. During this weekend, we will discuss the heavy cross of pornography, and how it has taken hold in so many households. If you poll a priest, they will more than likely tell you that pornography is among the top three things mentioned in the confessional. As technology evolves and inappropriate material becomes so readily available, pornography is affecting many people: men, women and children, both young and old. The homily on this weekend will discuss pornography in general terms. Safe Haven Sunday has been instituted by many dioceses throughout the United States and is providing help and encouragement to those struggling with pornography. Because this special topic falls on the third weekend, we ll move the children s homily to the following weekend, January 26th and 27th.
