SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM: The Sacrament of Baptism is administered most Sundays at 11:30 a.m. Arrangements are made in advance at the Rectory. Sponsors must provide proof of eligibility by a letter from their respective Pastors. First-time parents attend a Pre-Jordan Meeting prior to Baptism, which is arranged at a mutually convenient time. 4 Mass of Thanksgiving Archbishop Charles J. Chaput will ordain Brandon M. Artman and his five classmates from the Archdiocese at the Cathedral Basilica of Ss. Peter and Paul on May 19. Until entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in 2012, Brandon had been the Director of Music/Organist and Director of Parish Services here at Saint Matthias, beginning in Father Artman will celebrate his Mass of Thanksgiving here at Saint Matthias on Sunday, May 20, the Solemnity of Pentecost, at 3:00 PM. Please arrive early to enjoy prelude music, featuring musicians from the Cathedral, beginning at 2:40 PM. All are invited to attend the Mass and a reception immediately following in Msgr. Noone Hall (the parish gym) to congratulate Father Artman and enjoy light refreshments. Please God they will be ordained priests next year. A deacon is an ordained minister of the Catholic Church. There are three groups, or "orders," of ordained ministers: bishops, presbyters (priests), and deacons. Deacons are ordained as a sacramental sign to the Church and to the world of Christ, who came "to serve, not to be served." The entire Church is called by Christ to serve, and the deacon, by virtue of his sacramental ordination and through his various ministries, is to be a servant in a servant-church. All ordained ministers in the Church are called to functions of Word, Sacrament, and Charity, but bishops, presbyters and deacons exercise these functions in various ways. As ministers of Word, deacons proclaim the Gospel, preach, and teach in the name of the Church. As ministers of Sacrament, deacons baptize, lead the faithful in prayer, witness marriages, and conduct wake and funeral services. As ministers of Charity, deacons are leaders in identifying the needs of others, making them known to Christ through the Prayer of the Faithful at Mass, then marshaling the Church's resources to meet those needs. Deacons are also dedicated to eliminating the injustices or inequities that cause such needs. But no matter what specific functions a deacon performs, they flow from his sacramental identity. In other words, it is not only what a deacon does, but who a deacon is, that is important. Seminarians are ordained deacons prior to their ordination as priests. There are also men (many are married) who minister in this Order permanently. There is no difference in the sacramental sign or the functions of these so-called "transitional" and "permanent deacons. 075 Saint Matthias - 4

Come for a day of spiritual renewal, and discover some peace and quiet in this whirlwind of a life that we all live. There is also the possibility of having a session with one of our Spiritual Directors on staff. $15 (+$20 for spiritual direction.) Registration required. May 9 (2 nd Wednesday of each month): 7:30 PM Taize Prayer with Adoration. Contemplative communal prayer service (one hour) that consists of meditative singing, Scripture reading, and periods of silence in order to reach a contemplative state, integrated with Eucharistic Adoration (until midnight). July or July 23-30: Summer directed retreat week/weekend for an extended time of prayer and silence. Fees/registration required. Main Line Singles Dinner Club (Ages 52-66) Catholic men and women are cordially invited to join The Main Line Singles Dinner Club to share common interests & dine together twice a month. Our regular 12:05 PM Novena and Mass will immediately follow. June 1: 6:00 8:30 PM, Young Adult Praise and Worship evening. All young adults are invited to Eucharistic Adoration, followed by refreshments and fellowship. The Theme is What is God Calling You to Do? A new Catholic men s retreat for the Catholic man or any man who is striving for holiness and virtue. We will have fun doing so! Come to learn what your legacy can be and what it means to be a man of virtue. This will be like NO RETREAT you have ever experienced before! All men are welcome. This would be a good retreat for fathers and sons to attend together, but it s also for single men, all men, ages 13 and up. Activities include prayer, softball, and meals. Cost is $99 per person.
