SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM: The Sacrament of Baptism is administered most Sundays at 11:30 a.m. Arrangements are made in advance at the Rectory. Sponsors must provide proof of eligibility by a letter from their respective Pastors. First time parents attend a Pre-Jordan Meeting prior to Baptism, which is arranged at a mutually convenient time. SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE: Arrangements must be made with the Pastor at least six months before the date of the Wedding. Pre-Cana instructions are required. 3 September 22-27, 2015 REGISTRATION: Register early for the World Meeting of Families! There is something for everyone: Compelling content for adults; fun faith formation for young people ages 6 through high school graduate. Daycare is also available. HOSTING FAMILIES: Two million visitors from all over the world are expected to visit Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families. Local residents in the Philadelphia region and Tri-State area are being asked to sign up as host families for the event and welcome visitors into their homes during the celebrations. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The World Meeting of Families needs thousands of volunteers to help make this international event a wonderful experience for all. Volunteers are needed to serve as Guest Services Associates, Volunteer Captains, Digital Diplomats, Special Services Coordinators, and Language Service Associates. WorldMeeting2015.org Yet again this year, we ve surpassed our $41,832 goal for the 2015 Catholic Charities Appeal one of only 31 parishes to do so!! Thank you for your generosity. Oblates of Saint Joseph This month the Oblates of Saint Joseph will begin to move into our former convent. The Oblates of Saint Joseph were founded in Asti, Italy in 1878 by Saint Joseph Marello. They now serve in many counties including the Philippians, Bolivia, Peru, Poland, Mexico, and Nigeria. They have been ministering in the United States since The Oblates are primarily working in the Scranton Diocese and in California. A special focus of their ministry is working with young people in schools, parishes, and other areas. The Oblates of Saint Joseph s seminarians will be living here at Saint Matthias Parish while they attend Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary. We are very happy to welcome the Oblates of Saint Joseph. Are you interested in becoming Catholic? Are you an adult Catholic who was never confirmed? Would you like to learn more about the Faith? In October we will be starting a series of sessions to explore our Catholic Faith. If you are interested in learning more about these classes, please contact Msgr. Mesure. 4 Camp Matthias 3 rd Annual Vacation Bible Camp Success! The children enjoyed it, the volunteers were spectacular, and parents were happy for a third year in a row. Nine fun-filled days of scripture and discussion, music, singing, dancing, crafts, storytelling, and games. Awesome! The children organized their own Talent Show again this year, which included singing, dancing, drummers, artists, magicians. Thank you, grandparents, parents, and friends, for attending this fun-filled show. The children learned that they can shine a light, a light that will tell everyone that they Walk His Way, a way of love, understanding and compassion. The campers were amazing lots of sharing and caring for one another; they learned this lesson well. To Tram and Trung Tran, Lori Curley Unterkoefler, and an anonymous donor, thank you for your financial support. We were able to treat the campers to pizza, buy arts and craft supplies, and pay for a camper s registration with your generous help. All in all it was a busy week, but our dedicated volunteers were on the ball. Thanks to Mike DeMonte and daughter Angelina for the guitar music and leading us in song-a-longs and cheers. Many thanks to our incredibly wonderful volunteers: Maiah Constantino, Lauryn and Christina Holgado, Eva Kraus, Amelie Lamay, Catherine Eicke, Nick and Ashlyn Fiorellini, Joe and Molly Oriold, Fiona and Emily Duffy, and Ali Dunleavy. I can honestly say that I could not have done it without them. Without their help and enthusiasm, our camp would not have been a success. The next pickup will be tomorrow - Monday, July 20. Saint John's Hospice seeks to be a community grounded in faith and service where homeless persons find dignity, respect, nourishment, and opportunities for new beginning. The hospice is in dire need of additional casseroles each month as the number of homeless men served has increased over the past years. Will you lend a hand by feeding the hungry? 5 Second Collection Envelopes Next Weekend: Mission Co-op Collection. This year, the Diocesan Office of the Propagation of the Faith has invited Father Richard Kennedy, MSC, and Father Gregory Ruamana, MSC, Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, to our parish. They will be here to talk to us at all the Masses next weekend. The Missionaries of the Sacred Heart have served in many mission lands since their founding more than 150 years ago. Please remember them in your prayers, asking God to give them wisdom and courage in spreading His word and in witnessing to His loving concern for all people all over the world. If you wish to help this worthy cause, please place your donation in an envelope clearly marked Mission Co-op Collection and place it in the regular collection at the offertory of the Mass next weekend. Also next weekend, we will take up the monthly Catholic Education Collection, which is used to support the various educational projects of the Parish. In particular, it underwrites the costs of our PREP program and the subsidies we as a Parish provide for our children attending Catholic grade schools. These second collection envelopes should be marked Catholic Education and placed in the main collection at the time of the offertory of the Mass. Thank you. Human life is a manifestation of God and His glory. - Pope Benedict XVI Merion Mercy Academy, an independent, all girls Catholic High School sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, has an opening for a short term substitute position in English for a few weeks at the beginning of the school year. St. Matthias Parish will be hosting a clothing drive to benefit The Society of St. Vincent de Paul on Saturday, August 1, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul will be using the services of GreenDrop to support their clothing drive. Look for the GreenDrop truck in the church parking lot where an attendant will be available to assist you with your donations. Please place your donations of usable men's, women's and children's clothing in plastic bags or boxes. Household items such as: kitchenware, games/toys, small appliances under 50 pounds, electronics, sporting goods, books, CDs & videos are also accepted. Unfortunately, furniture, large appliances, TVs or computer monitors cannot be accepted. For a full list of acceptable items visit Help serve the isolated homebound of our community by providing home-cooked meals. Volunteer cooks should have the willingness to prepare meals or even just cook an extra serving of what you are already preparing for dinner. Please pick up trays (found in the Church vestibules) and return filled trays that have been frozen to the freezer on the back porch of the Rectory. Volunteers from Aid for Friends take the meals from the freezer and deliver them to needy shut-ins and spend some time visiting with the person receiving the meals. Thank you for brightening the day of a homebound person with a nutritious, delicious home-cooked meal! Saint Matthias Youth Group (grades 7-12) meets Sundays from 5 to 7 PM in the Parish Center. We learn more about our Catholic Faith, share meals together, participate in community service, and enjoy other fun activities. A Prayer for Job Seekers Gracious and loving God, you know our need for meaningful work. Send your Holy Spirit to guide those who are searching for employment. Help them to recognize the gifts and talents you have given them. Deepen their desire to follow your will. Inspire them as they contact potential employers. Give them patience. Shelter them from feelings of rejection. Protect them for discouragement. Give them courage to overcome fear. Shower them with the graces they need to persevere. Let this time of searching become an opportunity to grow in faith, to cultivate the virtue of hope, and to experience your healing love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. In order to help us prepare for the World Meeting of Families and the visit from Pope Francis, a catechism on family life entitled, Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive, has been prepared. Copies of this book were distributed at Christmas as a gift from Saint Matthias Parish. Extra copies are available at the Church doors. Our parish will reflect on the chapters from this catechism monthly through September. Chapter 9: Mother, Teacher, Family: The Nature and Role of the Church From its opening paragraphs, this catechism has explained how we were created for communion with God and one another. The Church has institutional forms because this communion must be visible and tangible, and active in the world. The Church s earthen vessels are necessary for proclaiming a spiritual reality: the Church is the Bride of Christ, a she, not an it. In the words of Saint John XXIII, the Church is our mother and teacher, our comforter and guide, our family of faith. All the baptized are the Church s sons and daughters, giving Christians our most fundamental and authentic identity. As members of the Church, we are members of the one body that is not defined by any human qualification, such as age, nationality, or intelligence, or by any human achievement, such as efficiency, organization, or moral virtue. Even when her people and leaders sin, we still need the Church s wisdom, sacraments, support, and proclamation of the truth. Just as our own sinfulness never erases our creation in God s image, when Catholics sin, that does not erase the Church s holiness. The Church s essence depends on Jesus, a foundation which holds us accountable, but which is also deeper and more secure than any human achievement or failure. God never abandons us. Despite her many failures, the Church cannot shirk the responsibility to preach and live the Gospel. Love is our mission, and the Church is the family that teaches and embodies this love.
