The purpose of the organiza on is for Couples that are members of Saint Barnabas to join together socially at different venues. Independence Day week, and there is a link worth tracing between the Declara on of Independence and the language of liturgy. One of the signers of the Declara on on that July 4 long ago was Charles Carroll, probably the wealthiest man in the colonies and one of the few Catholics on the poli cal scene. As a flourish to his signature, he sought to dis nguish himself from other prominent ci zens bearing the same name by penning Charles Carroll of Carrolltown a defiant come and get me if you dare postscript aimed at the Bri sh. Carroll s brother John was a priest and patriot who in 1789 was given the task of organizing the Catholic Church in this country. By 1791 he had assembled a synod, or assembly of delegates, to launch that task formally. Archbishop Carroll wanted to gain acceptance of our faith by American people who mistrusted our customs and could not comprehend our liturgy. He made the amazing proposal to Rome that our liturgy should be prayed not in La n, but in the vernacular, English. His wish was denied, but one hundred sixty years later, his deep desire helped the American bishops and scholars at the Second Va can Council to win the vote in favor of the vernacular not just for the United States, but for the Church throughout the world. Building Wide Cleaning and Maintenance Week of July It is almost me for our yearly heavy duty cleaning. For your comfort and safety, all Masses and ac vi es will be canceled Monday through Friday, the week of July This includes all day and evening ac vi es. We want to give you early no ce so that you can make other arrangements for your group to meet elsewhere if need be. The office schedule will be amended, and that will be posted in next week s bulle n. The Adora on Chapel will also be closed Sunday, 7/16 through Wednesday, 7/19. 5 Young Church Faith Forma on Religious Educa on St. Barnabas Youth by Simeon Willis Totus Tuus Vaca on Bible School, July 23 28, 2017 All grades entering pre K 12 are invited to Totus Tuus. Registra on forms are in the social hall. The cost is $20 a child, with a maximum of $50 a family. Families with regular adult and/or teen volunteers during the day program may waive the fee. Ma hew 11:28 A HUMBLE KING Like a tonal center in music, the note to which we keep returning in today s readings is humility. We wait in joyful expecta on for the coming of our Lord as King. But what we are told to expect and rejoice over is a meek and humble king, riding on an ass. Not horses or chariots of the great and mighty, but a humble beast carries the Ruler whose dominion stretches from the River to the ends of the earth (Zechariah 9:10). This is a FREE presenta on by the Council on Aging of Buncombe County.
