Book of Remembrance in November The month of November and the remembrance of All Souls is here. As is our custom here at St. Barnabas, you are invited to write the names of deceased loved ones in our Book of Remembrance, located at the front of the Church near the Bap smal Font. At every Mass in November, as we pray for the dead, we will especially remember those whose names are wri en in our book. Please take the opportunity to add to our Book of Remembrance anyone for whom you would like the parish to pray. Holy Father's Prayer Intentions for November, 2016 Universal: Countries Receiving Refugees That the countries which take in a great number of displaced persons and refugees may find support for their efforts which show solidarity. Evangelization: Collaboration of Priests and Laity That within parishes, priests and lay people may collaborate in service to the community without giving in to the tempta on of discouragement. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION T he recent October count tracking the sta s cs of par cipa on at Sunday Mass calls to mind the situa ons of churches where it is difficult or impossible for Catholics to worship freely. This is especially striking in English Catholic history, as freedom of worship was systema cally dismantled at the me of the Reforma on. It seems that most English people retained deeply Catholic sympathies throughout the period of religious upheaval. Catholics who refused to par cipate in the public worship of the Church of England were called recusants, and beginning with the reign of Elizabeth I, they were subject to strict penal es. Recusant literally means a person refusing to obey a command. Most of those laws were in force un l the early 1800s, and Catholics were not en rely emancipated from the duty of Anglican worship un l Recusants paid heavy fines for not a ending the state church. Holding on to Catholic faith was therefore a luxury of the very rich, who maintained private chapels, and sent their daughters and sons to English convents and monastery schools on the con nent. Remarkably, the first among all Bri sh peers, the Dukes of Norfolk, the hereditary Earls Marshal of England, have never given up their Catholic faith. Many of these wealthy recusant families founded the colony of Maryland, and later many members of the old Catholic families con nued on to the Kentucky fron er in search of greater religious freedom. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 31 st Sunday in Ordinary Time October 30, 2016 The LORD lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down. GOD IS WITH US T he Psalm 145:14 book of Wisdom tells us that the spirit of God is in all things. What a wonderful thought, and what a wonderful image to keep in front of us as we travel down life s road. For if the path is revealed in the treading, it s good to know that God is with us and all around us every step of the way. But Paul knows that this divine presence is not mid. Instead, God calls out to us, and Paul prays that we, along with the Thessalonians, might be made worthy of that call. And who knows more about God s call than Zacchaeus, the tax collector? Jesus called him out of a tree, for goodness sake. Or perhaps more correctly, as we reflect upon the end of today s Gospel reading, for heaven s sake. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

11 Abortion And The Economy Children are our greatest natural resource. Yet, throughout the western world, birthrates have plummeted. In Europe, the major countries such as Germany, Italy, France, Greece and the U.K all have total fer lity rates (TFR or children per female) well below 1.5. Japan's TFR is at rock bo om at 1.1. Because of the "onechild" policy, China's TFR is also around 1.5 and their future problems will undoubtedly be compounded by the gender imbalance (caused by selec ve abor ons). Countries have li le future when birthrates fall so low. Economically, the problems are obvious. Governments in Europe and North America have built elaborate and generous en tlement states since World War II. But an aging popula on and the inverted demographic pyramid places enormous burdens on the youth, causing significant and ul mately catastrophic strains on the public purse. The U.S. alone has $100 trillion worth of unfunded public liabili es. In the U.S., the TFR currently stands at 2.0. This is higher than European countries, Japan and China, thanks in large part to immigra on (both legal and illegal). Yet, this figure is well below the figures experienced throughout our history when our economy was booming. The 2010 Census showed the slowest growth rates since the Great Depression. The overall cost to our economy of each abor on is: * Total annual consump on of goods and services per abor on: $36,234 * Total annual taxes lost per abor on: $12,440 * Total annual loss to economy per abor on: $48,674 Since Roe v Wade in 1973, there have been around 56 million abor ons. The total annual loss of 56 million abor ons is over $2,595,000,000,000. No wonder we have a Social Security and Medicaid problem and this problem will only worsen as more baby boomers reach re rement and our inverted demographic pyramid becomes even more pronounced! Of course, we can never put a price on a precious soul created by God, but one need not wonder why we are facing a global economic collapse. Why are we funding Planned Parenthood each year to kill the soul of our na on and contribute to the fall of our economy? Is that not totally insane? You are invited to pick up a Spiritual Adop on booklet in the social hall and pray for your spiritually adopted baby in the coming months. The booklets are on the Respect Life table. Baby Shower to benefit the Open Arms Crisis Pregnancy Center Please bring your dona ons to Mass not later than November 6 Items Needed: Diapers, all sizes (small packages preferred) Clothing, sizes 0 24 months (especially one piece ou its) Lo on, shampoo/wash, and wipes New and gently used baby equipment (no car seats or full size cribs, please) Forgiveness and Healing a er Abor on Rachel s Vineyard Weekend Retreats create a healing environment of prayer and forgiveness. These retreats are for anyone who is experiencing hurt and pain related to abor on. The retreat works to reconnect individuals to themselves, their friends, and their families and to realize God s ever present love. Upcoming Rachel s Vineyard Retreat: Asheville Area November 11 13, 2016 For more informa on please contact: Jackie Childers: ; jackie.childers1@gmail.com.
