KEEP HOLY THE SABBATH T here s no be er way to deepen our Lenten prac ce than to review the Ten Commandments. The first three, having to do with our right rela onship to God, get the most ink. The one we busy people probably have the most problem with is keeping holy the Sabbath. If we take this commandment literally, babies will go undiapered and dishes will stay on the table, or perhaps meals will not be served. The sick will go una ended and nothing that has anything to do with physical labor will be done. Is mental labor really work? How about changing that dirty diaper (poor baby!)? We need to depend on God to discern how to observe real Sabbath me in our lives. The point of this commandment is that God has given us a great gi : one whole day per week when we are free to rest, worship God, sing, feast, love, and rejoice. As Psalm 19 proclaims: The law of the Lord is perfect, / refreshing the soul (19:8). Our Sabbath rest is a great gi, to be received from God with joy, not with nitpicking. Copyright J. S. Three Times In Modern History The Word "Person" Has Been Redefined: 1857: The U.S. Supreme Court declares that African Americans are not legal persons. They are the "property" of their owners. 1936: The German Supreme Court, the Reichsgericht, refuses to recognize Jews living in Germany as persons. Genocide becomes legal. 1973: The U.S. Supreme Court rules that the unborn are not persons in the legal sense; they have no civil or human rights. The unborn are the "property" of the mother, who can "choose" to abort them up to the day of delivery. "The word person as used in the 14 th Amendment does not include the unborn." I guess I am too anxious for Spring to come, and had printed April s anniversaries last week instead of March. ed. It s soon to be St. Joseph s Day and our St. Vincent de Paul Society needs our help. This year, the St. Joseph s Day altar will be up from March 10 un l March 18. This year s table request is shaving cream, disposable razors, deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste & brushes, and facial soap. Each of these items comes in a men s and women s variety. These items cannot be purchased with food stamps and go a long way to helping our local poor with their bodily needs. Two boxes will be on the altar; one for monetary dona ons and one for prayer requests. The society will offer those inten ons during their prayer at their mee ngs. These dona ons will help provide Easter food boxes for our local poor as well as the boxes that are handed out every Thursday, and monetary aid with gas, electric, and rent. Our St. Barnabas Conference of St. Vincent de Paul is ever apprecia ve of all the help our congrega on gives to con nue their ministry. If you would like more informa on about the St. Joseph s Day altar, pick up an informa onal tri fold. Please give SVdP your prayer requests, it is the greatest way they can thank you, by uni ng their prayers with yours.
