Pre K through 8 th For further informa on or to schedule a tour, please contact Culvern Street Asheville, NC TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION A s Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serve with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdic on of the Catholic Church called the Military Vicariate. In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the Archdiocese for Military Services, USA. Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the ba lefield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in He was assigned as a schoolmaster, but he sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as an Catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the me of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to a end Protestant services. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the Nuns of the Ba lefield (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War vic ms) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. In the past few years we have witnessed the devasta on of life and property through earthquakes and hurricanes. So many li ed their lament to God, simply asking, Why? This is an honest expression of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the li le girl in today s Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, Why? At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalmist our own: Hear, O Lord, and have pity on me; O Lord, be my helper. Let us pray that our mourning will one day be turned into dancing. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Did you know: The residual effects of having been abused can last a life me Those who have been abused seldom just "get over it." The sense of viola on goes deep into a person's psyche and feelings of anger, shame, hurt and betrayal can build long a er the abuse has taken place. Some have even described the feeling as if it has scarred their soul. Those who have been abused can heal, but if o en takes me, therapy, and the support of loved ones. As a Church, we can help support those who have been abused by keeping them in prayer and providing opportuni es for healing. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul "We must be firm but not rough in our guidance and avoid an insipid kind of meekness, which is ineffec ve. We will learn from Our Lord how our meekness should always be accompanied by humility and grace so as to a ract hearts to Him and not cause anyone to turn away from Him." Details (in English and Spanish) and the Catholic News Herald's logo are a ached for considera on for publica on in your parish bulle n. If you have any ques ons about this new feature or promo ng it to your parishioners, please contact Editor Patricia Guilfoyle at plguilfoyle@charlo ediocese.org. Interested in a Relaxed Pace Pilgrimage to Italy with visits to Rome, Assisi, Siena, Florence and San Giovanni Rotondo? Don t let a Mobility Limita on discourage you! Depar ng Nov 4, For more informa on please peaceandjus ce@saintbarnabasarden.org Thank you in advance for spreading the word about this new feature! Fatherless Families Roe v Wade encouraged an explosion in promiscuity and undoubtedly, abor on has become a form of contracep on. Sex without consequences has resulted in fatherless families. At least 20 million American kids are growing up without their fathers in the home. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 78 % of all African American households were led by married parents in the 1950's and 60's. Today, only 26 % of homes in the African American community are led by married parents. It is no coincidence that this same community has been most devastated by abor on. The social and economic consequences of fatherless families are truly monumental. A child living without a father in the home is 8 mes more likely to suffer from maltreatment; suffers over 10 mes the rate of abuse, and nearly 8 mes the rate of neglect. * Similarly, children without fathers in the home are 5 mes more likely to live in poverty and twice as likely to drop out of school. They are also at a much higher risk of incarcera on, drug use, teenage pregnancy and con nuing the cycle of poverty. The main vic m of our culture of death is the 3,500 innocent babies who lose their lives each and every day in America. However, there are many other vic ms including many children born into fatherless homes. As a society, we need to urgently consider how we stop this destruc ve trend of abandonment. We need to listen to the wise words of Mother Teresa: "America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v. Wade has deformed a great na on. The so called right to abor on has pi ed mothers against their children and women against men. It has sown violence and discord at the heart of the most in mate human rela onships. It has aggravated the deroga on of the father's role in an increasingly fatherless society. It has portrayed the greatest of gi s a child as a compe tor, an intrusion, and an inconvenience." * Administra on of Children & Families page 12 "Fourth Na onal Incidence Study of Child Abuse and Neglect" 2010
