THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY Couples should make an appointment with the priest or deacon at the me of engagement and at least six months in advance of any wedding date to begin prepara ons. No date should be set before that mee ng so all canonical requirements are met. One party must be registered and an ac ve Catholic. All weddings take place inside the Church. THE SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF SICK The anoin ng of the sick can be administered to anyone suffering from a serious or chronic illness. Saint Barnabas Couples Club The Saint Barnabas Couples Club is a social organiza on that meets the first Tuesday of the month between 7:00 and 7:30 pm in the Saint John the XXIII conference room (followed by refreshments in the social hall). The purpose of the organiza on is for Couples that are members of Saint Barnabas to join together socially at different venues. The store, located on the C Hall, will be open a er all English Masses the weekends of September 8/9 and 22/23. This Week s Schedule Father Adrian will be away Monday, so there will be no Mass. The rest of the week will be as normally scheduled. Priests Re rement and Benefits Collec on The dedicated priests who served us in the past now deserve to live out their re rement years in dignity. Please be as generous as you can in this second collec on next weekend, as our assessment is nearly two mes our regular offertory. Addi onal envelopes will be in the pews. Healthways Program in English To Be Offered This healthy living course will be offered in English at St. Barnabas Church during weekday day me hours. Please see the representa ve in the social hall a er Mass for more informa on and to sign up. St. Monica Novena Thank you to all the people who joined us in the St. Monica novena in August. We had a good turnout for the St. Monica feast day Mass on August 27, and a nice brunch following. The St. Monica statue now lives in the sanctuary in a nook near where the choir sits please con nue to seek her intercession and thank her for prayers answered. Thank you to Father Porras who was behind the novena 100%, and to all the folks who brought food for the brunch. The prayer goes on! 5 Young Church Faith Forma on Religious Educa on St. Barnabas Youth by Simeon Willis Fun & Witness at the Mtn. State Fair: On September 15, all teens have the opportunity to have fun and witness at the NC Right to Life Booth, and the Catholic Apologe cs Booth. I can take up to six teens in the order you RSVP. Schedule: Mee ng at the fair's main entrance (Gate 7) at 8:45am. Booths: 9am noon. Free rides: noon 2:30pm. Pickup: 3pm at Gate 7. Please bring your own lunch or be ready to buy it. Note: to come, you do not need to be an expert on sharing your faith or on pro life issues. People generally do not want to argue, but to thank you (for the pro life stance) and to be welcomed by you at the apologe cs booth. (Most visitors there are former Catholics who are not there to argue but are looking for a chance to be welcomed back.) Adults will be present to support you. If any parents are interested in being a chaperone, please also RSVP. This event is a great way to strengthen your own faith through sharing it. On the recent abuse revela ons: We are all sickened, saddened and enraged by the evils done and covered up by the hierarchy of the Church, perhaps all the way to the top. I cannot fathom the level of pain the vic ms have suffered over the years, especially when their stories were ignored and silenced by those who should have been most a en ve. This is a dark me for the Catholic Church. What should our response be? 1. "Don't leave; LEAD" (Fr. Mike Schmitz). Don't leave Jesus because of Judas. The Church has always had many like Judas who have betrayed God and His people, but the Church does not belong to men. It belongs to God. God will never betray you, and He asks you to lead the Church to healing. Never lose hope. Remain in the Church. The scandals were caused by infidelity to the Church; let us be faithful. 2. Be angry for the purpose of change. Demand inves ga ons be performed and jus ce brought. Don't just vent, but be construc ve and respec ully write to our bishop to publicly support an inves ga on into the claims of Bishop Vignano against McCarrick, Wuerl, etc., and including Pope Francis himself. We have been given more power than we realize in the Mass, the Sacraments and the Rosary. Pray the Rosary daily for the Church, the pope, bishops and priests, make sacrifices, go to Mass and Confession. TREASURES B FROM OUR TRADITION ack to work we go! Summer break is over and there is much to accomplish in school and in the workplace. It s a venerable Catholic custom to assign patron saints to the trades and occupa ons of life. This is largely in the realm of popular devo on, and although from me to me the Va can declares a saint to be patron of this or that, the process is free wheeling and just about uncontrollable. S ll, there is a saint for almost any purpose, whether you are on death row (Dismas), having eye trouble (Lucy), or pursued by poisonous toads (Hubert). Medieval guilds would o en associate themselves with heavenly patrons, so Saint Joseph has the carpenters, Thomas More the lawyers, and physicians get Saint Luke. If you re stuck in the airport, St. Joseph of Cuper no is on call since he was said to rise off the floor when he prayed, and if you re in a long line at the ATM, Saint Anthony Claret is for you. In recent years, the Va can has from me to me assigned a new patronage, as when Saint Aloysius Gonzaga was named the patron of HIV AIDS pa ents, since as a young Jesuit novice he had cared for his fellow novices during a terrible plague. Anything that ma ers to us na on, parish church, occupa on, illness can have a patron, and it is an aspect of Catholicism that has enormous appeal. To believe in the communion of saints is to know that the es that bind us as a communion do not unravel with death, and that when we stand before life s struggles, we do not stand alone. She was thanking St. Vincent De Paul and the parishioners who have been a part of the program since it started 5 years ago October. Sharon was our first coordinator for St. Barnabas followed by Rosemarie and now Mike. Every fourth Saturday a group of parishioners and St. Vincent De Paul are there to welcome all who come to enjoy a boun ful breakfast. It has been a big success thanks to those who have served so faithfully. We want to share this with you who have been there to make this a success and to say Thank You for a job well done. We need sugar and flour; coffee and tea; canned tuna & canned chicken; toothpaste (adult and children) and toothbrushes (all sizes); bars of soap; powdered laundry detergent (we break these down into baggies); shampoo and body lo on; feminine products (tampax and pads + baby wipes), and deodorant (both men and women).
