4 Parish Life St. Barnabas Catholic Church Arden, NC ruary 19, 2017 Our Prayers Bookstore & Gi Shop Schedule The store, located on the C Hall, will be open a er all English Masses the weekends of ruary 25/26. This Week s Schedule Regular Mass and Communion schedule in effect. I want to thank everyone involved in putting together the Father & Daughter Dance. This has become a cherished event here at St. Barnabas. From the food, the decorations and the music this was an evening enjoyed by all. - Fr. Adrian In response to the Volunteer Spotlight in last week s bulle n Paulette and I were surprised by this (2/12/17) week s bulletin section naming us in the Volunteer Spotlight. We moved here in 1992 and because we were moving with our four sons we were approached to work with the youth and gladly volunteered, it wasn t long after that that Paulette volunteered for the Family Life Commission -- Through the years we have added many thing to our volunteerism. I am telling you all this because I want everyone to know that we feel we have received far more blessing in our life because of this than we feel that we give. The feeling of great love and friendships that have come to us through this volunteerism has been tremendous. The feeling of peace we receive through serving the Mass is unbelievable. This parish is truly our home and we want you to feel the same way... I wish there were a way to communicate to everyone in the parish all of the opportunities there our in our parish to help others. You too can feel the peace, love and friendships in your lives if you only give a little of your time each month. Don t wait to be asked because we can t see everyone so if you are looking for a way to get involved in our parish you can either call the Office or you could talk to Paulette or me and we would be more than happy to help you find your special place to serve. In Christ Peace, The Wardwells If you missed the ar cle in the 2/12/17 about Dana and Paule e, you can read it online here: h ps://saintbarnabasarden.org/bulle ns Has someone made a difference for you at our church? 5 Young Church Religious Educa on Reflec ons St. Barnabas Youth by Simeon Willis Youth: The Future or Part of the Present? I o en hear that the youth are the future of our Church. While this is true in a limited sense, I think what young people need to hear more frequently is that they are part of the Church in the present: they are valued and needed now and not just at some future date. Catholic youth today have many ideas and are contagiously enthusias c about them. If we come to know them personally, they can shake us out of our normalcy and inspire us to act. Older adults have the wisdom and experience needed to help guide and encourage the youth in their enthusiasm, without which it is so easy for them to be discouraged and even give up. Please pray for the youth, and start forming rela onships with them. It may not be ask hard as you think once you start. They are in the same social hall a er Mass as you are What specifically are the youth learning about in Youth Ministry? The middle school youth are in the middle of a special eight week course, learning the Theology of the Body which explores the dignity of the human person and how we make God present to each other through our bodies. The high school youth are exploring the Scriptures, through a mixture of study and Lec o Divina (Chris an medita on on the Scriptures) Diocesan Support Appeal (DSA) Has Begun Your every act should be done with love. 1 Cor 16:14, is the theme of the 2017 Diocesan Support Appeal. You should have received a le er or postcard from Bishop Jugis asking for your generous support of the DSA; and next weekend we will view the DSA video, so we can all have an understanding of how the funds given to the DSA impact our diocese. Bishop Jugis asks each of us to prayerfully consider a gi to the DSA as a way of serving Christ through service to thousands of Catholics in western North Carolina. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION I n brushing up for Catholic Jeopardy, it might help to know that there is only one feast on the calendar for a thing, rather than a person or mystery. It s for a chair: Saint Peter s chair in fact. A er the Resurrec on, there can be no doubt that the disciples reserved a special place for Simon Peter in the upper room. Later, Peter became the bishop of An och in today s Syria, the place where we were first called Chris ans. From there, he went to Rome, the center of the Empire, where it is said that Peter sat in a chair in the house of Priscilla and Aquila to instruct his flock. Jesus, in entrus ng the keys of the Kingdom to Peter and his successors, entrusted his compassion and mercy to them, and charged them with poin ng to the Kingdom of God. Compassion and mercy are to resonate through their teaching. Since the ancient sign of a teacher is the chair ( disciple literally means one who sits at the feet of a teacher), Peter s chair has long been treasured. Today there is a symbolic shrine of Peter s chair above the main altar of St. Peter s Basilica in Rome. This monument is the last work of Bernini, a huge bronze throne supported by four doctors of the Church: Augus ne and Ambrose from the Western Church, and Chrysostom and Athanasius from the East. High above it is the alabaster window of the descent of the Holy Spirit. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time ruary 19, 2017 Be holy, for I, the Lord, your God, am holy. Levi cus 19:2b WHERE ARE YOU HEADED? Lent is a me to renew our faith something that requires prayer and reflec on. In a small community we can see how Jesus himself, although he was o en on the move and o en engaged with crowds of people, always took me for silence and prayer; we realize how important it is for us to do the same. Live Lent! will provide the opportunity. Why not take the me this Lent for quiet, prayer and sharing in a small group? The faithsharing book also provides medita ons you can use on all the other days of Lent. Sign ups con nue the week of ruary 18 19, Members of the Educa on Commission will be there to answer ques ons and assist you with the sign up process.
