4 Parish Life St. Barnabas Catholic Church Arden, NC July 2, 2017 Our Prayers Bookstore & Gi Shop Schedule The store, located on the C Hall, will be open a er all English Masses the weekend of July 7/8 and 22/23. July 4 th is Independence Day Among the things which concern the good of the Church and indeed the welfare of society here on earth things therefore which are always and everywhere to be kept secure and defended against all injury this certainly is preeminent, namely, that the Church should enjoy that full measure of freedom which her care for salvation of men requires. This freedom is sacred, because the only-begotten Son endowed with it the Church which He purchased with His blood. It is so much the property of the Church that to act against it is to act against the will of God. The freedom of the Church is the fundamental principle in what concerns the relations between the Church and governments and the whole civil order. Bethlehem Olive Wood Carvings Sale Next Weekend Today, more than 600 Chris an families, mostly Catholic, living in Bethlehem, rely completely on the hand carved olive wood figures to make their livings. The Recent clashes in the Middle East have caused most serious harm to those families, forcing them to flee their homeland. So we are sent in a mission to market some of the beau ful religious handcra s made by these poor families. We would like to encourage all of you to take a look at the display and see if there is something you would like to purchase from us. This would be a very special gi especially for Christmas. Remember, by doing so, you are helping to protect the many Chris ans in the holy land and ge ng piece of art work from the land of Christ. Romans 6:11 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION I t s Independence Day week, and there is a link worth tracing between the Declara on of Independence and the language of liturgy. One of the signers of the Declara on on that July 4 long ago was Charles Carroll, probably the wealthiest man in the colonies and one of the few Catholics on the poli cal scene. As a flourish to his signature, he sought to dis nguish himself from other prominent ci zens bearing the same name by penning Charles Carroll of Carrolltown a defiant come and get me if you dare postscript aimed at the Bri sh. Carroll s brother John was a priest and patriot who in 1789 was given the task of organizing the Catholic Church in this country. By 1791 he had assembled a synod, or assembly of delegates, to launch that task formally. Archbishop Carroll wanted to gain acceptance of our faith by American people who mistrusted our customs and could not comprehend our liturgy. He made the amazing proposal to Rome that our liturgy should be prayed not in La n, but in the vernacular, English. His wish was denied, but one hundred sixty years later, his deep desire helped the American bishops and scholars at the Second Va can Council to win the vote in favor of the vernacular not just for the United States, but for the Church throughout the world. They teach us to be thankful and kind. We learn that we need li le and yet, want much. We learn humility. We learn that charity is love. The pure are so much more resilient than we than we can ever imagine. Their faith is tested daily, yet they give us a smile and a hug. They are so grateful for the food we give, the bills we pay, and the advise we offer. Thank you to our clients. You teach us daily. Thank you to our donors. You generously allow us to help others. Please consider being part of the Parish Life Commission. For the last couple of years our Parish Life Commission has been ably steered by Jo Landreth and Bridget Babcock. Both Jo and Bridget now need to step down and hand the reins to others, as family and career obliga ons have increased for them. We are very grateful for their enthusiasm and exper se in planning and execu ng Parish Life events here at St. Barnabas Catholic Church. What is the purpose of a Parish Life Commission? In short, according to the Diocese of Charlo e: This commission is concerned with those ma ers that build an internal parish family spirit and improve Chris an life in the community of the faith. What does that mean in a prac cal manner? We come to Mass each Sunday to hear God's Word, receive the Eucharist, and have fellowship with our parish family. But our focus at Mass is on God, and not on each other, so opportunity for really ge ng to know people and engage in fellowship is somewhat limited. We are fortunate to have a social hall where people can gather a er Mass and visit with each other. This has truly helped us become a parish family. Our Parish Life ac vi es take that a step further, and help us to get to know each other be er in a familial and recrea ve manner. We have fun. We eat meals, play games, have quiz nights, a end baseball games, and enjoy other ac vi es that give us pleasure in a God centered atmosphere. Can it get any be er than that? Some ac vi es the Parish Life Commission hosts each year are: St. Barnabas night at an Asheville Tourists game (scheduled for Aug. 1 st this year) Parish Picnic (typically in late summer/early fall) Recep ons a er Veteran's Day Mass, Easter Vigil Mass So back to the needing help part! Jo and Bridget have compiled instruc ons and lists for these events. They will be passing down an instruc on manual, if you will. No one will have to start from scratch not knowing what to do. And, the staff (par cularly Suzanne as liaison) is here to assist and support you. Volunteers also step forward to assist with each of these events. What we need is someone, and preferably a team of two or more, to be our next Jo and Bridget, to organize and plan events using available resources, but also adding your own new ideas just as Jo and Bridget did. Wouldn't it be disappoin ng if we had to curtail our Parish Life ac vi es for lack of interest? If you (and perhaps a buddy) think you would like to help in this area, please speak to Father Adrian or Suzanne. You will gain new friends, influence people, and the fringe benefits of this posi on are Divine! These are some pictures from past events hosted by the Parish Life Commission. Will there be pictures of future events??
