A Word from the Pastor I have just returned from a pilgrimage to Ireland and Scotland with a group sponsored by Oregon Catholic Press. My column this week is related to the Sunday Gospel: divorce and remarriage. It seems like a good time to review church teaching on these challenging topics. Let s begin with a basic definition of marriage, taken from church law: marriage is a covenant by which a man and woman establish between themselves a partnership for the whole of life. By its nature this partnership is directed to the good of the spouses and the procreation and nurturing of children. When each spouse is baptized, we call that marriage a sacrament. A sacrament brings about what it signifies. And what does marriage signify? Christ s love for the Church, which is permanent, faithful, and fruitful. When all of this works together, there is no greater gift for a couple. Sadly, it doesn t always work that way, and a marriage might end in divorce. Catholic law permits a couple to seek civil law remedies for the legal issues that surround marriage and divorce. At the same time, the Catholic Church says that civil law has no power to dissolve a marriage; thus, a marriage is presumed valid and binding until proven otherwise. A single divorced Catholic remains a Catholic in good standing and may receive the Eucharist. And if a Catholic wishes to remarry? That s where the challenges arise. Because a divorced Catholic is still married in the eyes of the Church, a second marriage in the Church is not possible without an annulment. Since Vatican II, and the revised Code of Canon Law (1983), the grounds for annulment have increased. This includes psychological grounds which look to a person s capacity for valid consent and marriage. If consent is limited in some way e.g., by pressure, immaturity, a lack of understanding of marriage an annulment may be possible. In addition, if a Catholic is married outside of the Catholic Church, this marriage is not considered valid. In this case, a second marriage after divorce is possible. If you are a divorced and remarried Catholic, I would encourage you to look into an annulment. If you are currently married to a person who has a previous marriage, and you would like to be married in the Church, please give me or Sr. Connie a call. If you are Catholic, were married outside of the Church, and now want to be married in the Church, please contact me. It may come as a surprise to Catholics that divorced non-catholics need an annulment if they wish to marry in the Catholic Church. If you have any questions about a former marriage, and what options are available to you, please give me a call. There is much that can be done to clarify your status in the Catholic Church. And once the issues are settled, the entire family is able to receive the Eucharist and to share in the sacramental life of the Church. Don t wait; take care of it now. Msgr. Patrick S. Brennan

Baptismal Preparation for Parents of Infants: The next session will be on Thursday, October 18 at 7pm in the upper Cathedral Center. Enter from 17th Street. A Beginner Bible Study Available: If you are interested, please contact the office. The group will meet 1x/month and will be using a video series lesson from Dynamic Catholic and will be studying the Gospel of John. Altar Server Training: Any student, grades 4 and up, who is interested in becoming an altar server or wanting a refresher, are asked to call the parish office with their name and phone number. Training will be Tuesday, October 30 and Tuesday, November 6. The sessions are from 6:30-8pm in the Cathedral. Students only need attend one session. Parents are encouraged to stay for the training. Children s Liturgy of the Word: We are looking for volunteers to help teach Children s Liturgy of the Word at the 9 am Mass. Leaders are given materials and a teaching guide that makes educating our 4 year olds to fourth graders a rewarding and easy experience! Parish Religious Education Program: Please sign up for the sacramental preparation of your children, Grades 1 & 2: First Reconciliation and First Communion. Registration forms are at the Cathedral entrances. We are in need of more teachers/catechists to partner in teams of two. There are about 25 classes a school year, ending the first Sunday in May.
