Scripture Readings for November 18 Daniel 12:1-3; Hebrews 10:11-14,18; Mark 13:24-32 A Word from the Pastor The archdiocese asked me if I could be present at an interfaith and healing service at Neveh Shalom Synagogue in southwest Portland. I told them that I would be happy to represent our Catholic tradition at the service, especially since I was unable to attend a service at our neighbor, Beth Israel. I remember when the new Neveh Shalom Synagogue was built just off Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway in 1964, the large tablets of the law rising on what is now Peaceful Lane. I had never been in the synagogue until this event, and I looked forward to meeting the rabbis and the congregation. I was greeted by Carol Isaac, the wife of Rabbi-Emeritus Daniel Isaac. Carol had been active in the Catholic-Jewish dialogue that took place in Portland under the direction of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon and our former chancellor, Mary Jo Tully. Carol remembers fondly the many interfaith events in the post-vatican II era. Today, the synagogue was under heavy security, and Carol apologized for the measures that had to be taken because of the recent events at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. We slipped into the back of the smaller synagogue hall where the Shabbat Service was just concluding. The congregants would then move into the larger sanctuary next door where the interfaith healing service would take place. Entering the large hall, almost all of the seats were taken. At the door I met Rabbi David Kosak, the senior rabbi of Neveh Shalom, who welcomed me and thanked me for coming. Aside from Rabbi David, there were four other speakers: Rabbi Eve Posen, assistant rabbi; Shahriar Ahmad, from the Beaverton Bilal Mosque; a representative of the Lithuanian Lutheran Community; and myself. I began by noting that I was the youngster here our tradition going back only 2000 years. We are that little shoot sprung from the stump of Jesse, and we look fondly upon our elder brothers and sisters. As Pope Francis recently said to a Jewish group, We share the same roots. In light of this, we share the pain of our Jewish neighbors and friends following the tragic events of Pittsburgh. I went on to share, at their invitation, what our Catholic Tradition has to offer in times of trial and tribulation. Our first reaction, I said, is the same as theirs: to gather together for support, to pray for an end of violence and persecution, and to commit ourselves to action. As a Catholic, I mentioned the two large umbrellas which form the context of everything we do in good times and bad. The first is Jesus Christ, Lord and Savior and healer. The ministry of Jesus was one of healing the sick, the marginalized, the stranger. In Jesus, the hope of eternal life is offered to all. The second umbrella is the Kingdom, now in seed form, which one day will fill the earth with peace, justice, and love. All that we do in these difficult times find their context here. And this gives us hope, that the sufferings we now endure are nothing compared with the glory that awaits us. Shalom Alechem. Msgr. Patrick S. Brennan
3 Worship Prayer Faith Formation Veterans Day is Sunday: Monday, November 12, is a holiday. Masses will be at the regular times, 7:30am & 5:30pm. The office will be closed. The Book of Remembrance: November is the month in which we, in a special way, remember those who have died and gone before us. We are invited and encouraged to write the names of the deceased for whom we would like the parish to pray, in the book just outside the Eucharistic Chapel. Also placed in the book will be the names written on the All Souls Day offertory envelopes. The November Banner: The names of those whose Funeral or Memorial Mass was held in St. Mary s Cathedral this past year are on the banner by the statue of the Sacred Heart. Baptismal Preparation for Parents of Infants: The next session will be on Thursday, November 15 at 7pm in the upper Cathedral Center. Enter from 17th Street. There will be no class in December. We are in need of Readers, Eucharistic Ministers, and Greeters!: If you can give your time and talent to one of our liturgies, it would be a wonderful gift. There is an especially great need at the Saturday, Vigil 5:30pm Mass and Greeters for all the Masses. If you are interested, please contact the parish office. Catholic Campaign for Human Development: Next week, our second collection will be for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. Over 43 Million people in the United States live in poverty. This collection supports programs to empower people to identify and address the obstacles they face as they work to bring permanent and positive change to their communities. Learn more about the CCHD at Checks for the Second/Special Collections and Social Services: The bank is no longer accepting checks that are not specifically made out to St. Mary s Cathedral. Those checks will be returned to us. So please make ALL checks out to St. Mary s Cathedral with a note in the memo line indicating the collection to which you are donating. Social Services Reverse Advent Calendar: Social Services is asking Cathedral families and individuals to participate in a new Advent activity: the Reverse Advent Calendar. The concept is simple. Beginning November 21st, place an item a day into a box (or basket) until December 21st when we ask that the "calendars" be delivered to the rectory for distribution to families. Items can include nonperishable food, diapers, hygiene items, warm hats/gloves, toys, games, ponchos, blankets, and towels. This is a great opportunity to share the experience of giving with friends and family. No item is too small or grand to be included! All items must be new and unused If you are interested and can commit to this great project (we need to know how many families we can serve), please call Gail Calling all knitters! We are gearing up for our Christmas giving season and would like to enlist all levels of knitters to join the effort to provide warm scarves to those we serve. We can provide the yarn, if needed, and you supply the talent. Those interested in joining an informal knitting group at the Cathedral please call Gail at Other Items of Interest Are you looking for a class, retreat or event to attend? Cathedral School Mark your calendar for Cathedral School s Annual Open House Sunday, January 27, 2019, from 10:00-12:30. All families are invited to stop in to meet our staff and tour the school.
