A Word from the Pastor Happy Halloween! For many people children in particular Halloween is their favorite celebration of the year. But should we celebrate Halloween? With its focus on ghosts, goblins, and witches, is it appropriate for Christians? Some associate Halloween with devil worship and satanic cults. And some Christian fundamentalists see Halloween as too closely tied to Catholicism and Catholic feasts and thus reject it outright. I have recounted the history of Halloween before, but maybe it s good to review it again. Catholics, and some other Christians, find themselves caught in the Halloween arguments, not knowing what to believe and wondering whether their children are adversely affected. Let me say at the outset that Halloween is not anti-christian, not rooted in Satanism or demonic worship, and is, in fact, part of our Catholic tradition at least when it is properly understood. First of all, the word Halloween is a contraction of All Hallows Eve ; that is, the eve of All Saints (All Hallows). We use the word hallow (an old English word for saint or holy) in the Lord s Prayer ( hallowed be thy name ), but rarely other than that. All Saints Day, a Catholic feast and Holy Day of Obligation, is November 1 st, and its celebration begins the evening before (October 31 st, the eve of All Hallows). Both the feast and the vigil have been celebrated by Catholics since the eighth century when they were established by Pope Gregory III in Rome and later expanded to the universal Church. There really are no pagan origins to Halloween, despite the claims of fundamentalists. In the latter part of the middle ages there was an attempt to show a connection between Halloween and a Celtic harvest festival, but there is no evidence that Pope Gregory knew anything about an English pagan festival. Nonetheless, elements of this Celtic festival found its way into Halloween celebrations in Ireland and England, even among Catholics, and some of these traditions shorn of their paganism continue today. The Celtic elements of Halloween include lighting bonfires, carving pumpkins (originally turnips!), and going house to house for treats. Oddly, the darker aspects of Halloween e.g., ghosts and demons actually come from our own Catholic tradition. Custom had it that, on certain feasts, the veil that separates this life from the next, or from Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory, was very thin, allowing ghosts from Purgatory (or demons from Hell) to appear. Our custom of Halloween costumes and masks reflects this Christian and Celtic tradition, adding a bit of scariness and fear. Attacks on Halloween today are not the first. The Protestant Reformation would have nothing to do with saints, and thus All Saints Day and Halloween were suppressed. In America, the Puritans outlawed both the celebration of Halloween and Christmas. But the arrival of Irish and German immigrants to this country in the 19 th century revived Halloween and Christmas, and we celebrate them, with joy, today. So enjoy! Msgr. Patrick S. Brennan

The Masses to celebrate this feast day are: 5:30pm, Wednesday, October 31, Thursday, November 1 at 7:30am, 12:15pm and 5:30pm. The Book of Remembrance: November is the month in which we, in a special way, remember those who have died and gone before us. We are invited and encouraged to write the names of the deceased for whom we would like the parish to pray, in the book just outside the Eucharistic Chapel. Also placed in the book will be the names written on the All Souls Day offertory envelopes. All Souls Day Masses Friday, November 2 at Gethsemani Catholic Cemetery at 10am with Bishop Peter Smith and at Mt Calvary Cemetery 2pm with Archbishop Sample. Each year we commemorate the memory of our loved ones who have gone before us to their eternal rest. First Saturday, November 3. There will be Confessions and the recitation of the Rosary after the 7:30am Mass. You are invited to the annual 11am Requiem Mass on Sunday, November 4. The Cathedr al Choir will sing the Requiem of Gabriel Fauré. We welcome all parishioners and visitors to this special celebration as we remember all the faithful departed as well those names listed on the banner. Altar Server Training: Any student, grades 4 and up, who is interested in becoming an altar server or wanting a refresher, are asked to call the parish office with their name and phone number. Training will be November 6. The sessions are from 6:30-8pm in the Cathedral. Students only need attend one session. Parents are encouraged to stay for the training. We are in need of Readers, Eucharistic Ministers, and Greeters!: If you can give your time and talent to one of our liturgies, it would be a wonderful gift. There is an especially great need at the Saturday, Vigil 5:30pm Mass and Greeters for all the Masses. If you are interested, please contact the parish office. Those interested in joining an informal knitting group at the Cathedral please call Gail Kingsley at The Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel Archbishop Sample has asked everyone in the Archdiocese of Portland to pray the St. Michael Prayer, asking God s protection during these difficult times in the Church. In particular, Archbishop Sample states that we find ourselves in very distressing times with continued revelations about the failures of our brother priests and bishops. Given that, the powerful intercession of St. Michael is needed to fight the evil one who is at war with the Mystical Body of Christ.
