Scripture Readings for December 2 Jeremiah 33:14-16; 1 Thessalonians 3:12-4:2; Luke 21:25-28, A Word from the Pastor The month of November is a quiet time to remember our beloved dead and all the dead whose faith is known to God alone. We pray for those who have gone before us; and, for those dead who are blessed with eternal life, we ask them to pray for us as we continue ( the church militant ) our journey through life. But there is another theme this November, an important theme, that asks for our attention: the people whose lives have been stolen from them by clerical abuse. This is another form of death, at least according to abuse survivors. I haven t said much publicly since the August Pennsylvania grand jury report; but I will now add my voice to the chorus of voices who are calling for some action on the part of the Church to root out clerical abuse and to bring healing (and life) to survivors. The perception, of course, is that no one is doing anything to solve the problem. This perception was strengthened at the recent meeting of the United States Conference of Catholics Bishops when the president, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, announced that Pope Francis asked the conference to delay votes on proposals to address clergy sexual abuse. This announcement was met with surprise, frustration, disappointment, and many questions. With the bishops under enormous public scrutiny to take action, the lack of voting gave further indication that the Church does not now, nor ever has, taken the abuse crisis seriously. A public relations disaster? Yes. But even worse, another strike at the victims. Still, a balance of opinion is needed here. I have no doubt that Pope Francis takes clergy abuse very seriously. I know that our own archbishop takes clergy abuse very seriously. The pope s request does make some sense. First of all, the proposals of the USCCB that were to be voted on are not adequate to the task. Secondly, two recent announcements by the Vatican indicate that a USCCB vote might be premature. Pope Francis has called for an upcoming February summit of the presidents of the worldwide conferences of bishops to discuss, and to act upon, a plan for the protection of minors and a resolution to the clergy abuse crisis. The result of the summit will put in place an action plan that will be consistent from country to country. In addition, there is new player on the Church s team. On November 13, the Vatican appointed Archbishop Charles Scicluna, Archbishop of Malta, to be the new point man and lead agent in the Church s fight against clerical abuse. Archbishop Scicluna is no stranger to this battle. Most recently, Pope Francis sent Scicluna to Chile, resulting in the removal or resignation of 7 bishops. There is no person in the Vatican more astute than Scicluna when it comes to clergy abuse and clergy malfeasance. This gives me hope. The struggle will continue, but I will not let the lack of a vote at our bishops conference discourage me. The wheels of justice are turning, and they will prevail. Msgr. Patrick S. Brennan

There will be Confessions and the recitation of the Rosary after the 7:30am Mass. 9am Family Mass: We welcome the students of Cathedral School on December 2. They will be greeters, servers and readers for the 9am Mass. The Advent Reconciliation Service will be on Tuesday, December 11 at 7pm with multiple confessors. Baptismal Preparation for Parents of Infants: There will be no class in December. Christmas Mass Schedule: Christmas Eve: 4pm (Family Mass), 6pm and Midnight. Christmas Day: 7:30am, 9am, 11am.; No 5:30pm Mass. We are in need of Readers, Eucharistic Ministers, and Greeters!: If you can give your time and talent to one of our liturgies, it would be a wonderful gift. There is an especially great need at the Saturday, Vigil 5:30pm Mass and Greeters for all the Masses. If you are interested, please contact the parish office. Cathedral School Mark your calendar for Cathedral School s Annual Open House Sunday, January 27, 2019, from 10:00-12:30. All families are invited to stop in to meet our staff and tour the school. Social Services It's that time of year again to fill your calendar with good deeds and what better activity than helping to prepare stuffing for the 550 guests of Temple Beth Israel's Christmas Dinner sponsored by LIFT Urban Portland. Please join the Cathedral cooking squad Friday, December 21st, at 10:am in the Cathedral Center to slice, dice, sauté, and assemble our contribution to the dinner. Bring your cutting board, knife, and apron. Please call Gail if you would like to participate. Reverse Advent Calendar: Social Services is asking Cathedral families and individuals to participate in a new Advent activity: the Reverse Advent Calendar. The concept is simple. Beginning November 21st, place an item a day into a box (or basket) until December 21st when we ask that the "calendars" be delivered to the rectory for distribution to families. Items can include non-perishable food, diapers, hygiene items, warm hats/gloves, toys, games, ponchos, blankets, and towels. This is a great opportunity to share the experience of giving with friends and family. No item is too small or grand to be included! All items must be new and unused If you are interested and can commit to this great project (we need to know how many families we can serve), please call Gail Giving Tree: This Advent, we invite all our parishioners to take an ornament (or more!) from our Giving Tree and bring happiness to individuals and families in need. Items must be NEW and UNWRAPPED (in order to properly match the gift to recipient), and can be placed in the basket in the vestibule or dropped off at the parish office any time before December 21st (the earlier the better to insure delivery). Gifts are distributed to local families and individuals as well as those families in crisis referred to us by Catholic Charities, Refugee Resettlement, Housing Transitions, Cares NW, Veterans Outreach, St. Andre Bessette, Elks, NW Catholic Counseling Center and Pediatric Clinic at OHSU, among others. We are gearing up for our Christmas giving season and would like to enlist all levels of knitters to join the effort to provide warm scarves to those we serve.
