Celebrations In Our Parish This Past Week Baptisms: Ivory Kathleen Mulqueeney Patrick James Mulqueeney Mae Katharine Strickland Norah Rose Strickland Thomas David Strickland A Word from the Pastor My formal religious education began with this question: Who made us. And the answer: God made us. This was followed by Who is God, and the answer: God is the Supreme Being, infinitely perfect, who made all things and keeps them in existence. But here is the important question: Why did God make us? And the answer: God made us to show forth his goodness and to share with us His everlasting happiness in heaven. These questions and answers are taken from the Baltimore Catechism, the standard manual for religious education when I was in grade school. I quote it now because these first questions, and answers, got me thinking about the beyond, that there is something more than this world. Though I thought about heaven, I never gave much thought to resurrection; that is, to the fact that I might be body and soul with the Lord. The Easter season focuses on the Resurrection of Jesus, and that Resurrection stirred up my first (mild) crisis of faith. I remember a college theology class in which we were discussing resurrection from the dead, and the professor said that all of us, like Jesus, would experience a bodily resurrection. Though I stated this belief every Sunday in the Creed at Mass, I never really thought about it yes, Jesus rose, but me? So why do we have so much trouble believing in the resurrection? Part of it is a Christian tendency to denigrate the body in favor of the soul. The body is bad and sinful; the soul is pure and good. The Church never said this, but it was the general impression, especially when it came to sexual morality. Those who wonder about bodily resurrection are in good company: philosophers and theologians over the centuries have struggled to come up with an explanation and understanding. One reliable voice in this discussion is St. Thomas Aquinas, the great 13 th century teacher. St. Thomas says that the soul is the life force within us that enables us to be human beings: to love, to give of ourselves, to believe, to hope, to be self-conscious. This life-force is something more than our bodies but it depends on the body to express itself. Thus, the body and the soul, together, make us a person. One cannot be without the other, and each is matched to the other. So when we die, the soul does not simply merge with God and lose its identity. It retains its identity and uniqueness. But it is incomplete. And that is why it needs to be reunited with the body. But here s the twist: the body is not this body; it is the resurrected body. A new body. A new creation. It isn t the old shriveled body that died at 90, nor is it the immature body that died at 15. It is the body fully realized in its perfection, as God created it. And this body will never die again. That is the Easter message, the Good News of Jesus Christ that God showed forth his goodness, sent us his Son, and desires our happiness forever. Msgr. Patrick S. Brennan

Enter from 17th Street. This year marks the 100 th anniversary of Our Lady appearing to three children in Fatima, Portugal. Please join us in celebrating this amazing event with several events of our own a Fatima Movie at 6:15 p.m. on May 10 th in St. Joseph Hall with popcorn and candy, a Mass with Archbishop Sample at 2:30 p.m. on May 13 th and the First Five Saturdays devotion from June to October, complete with Mass, Rosary and confessions.
