Celebrations In Our Parish This Past Week Funeral: John Patton A Word from the Pastor I am just back from a pilgrimage to Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Scotland, organized by Oregon Catholic Press. If you have never gone on a pilgrimage with OCP, I would certainly recommend you consider it. The pilgrimage was well-organized, with excellent guides, daily Mass, and a focus on the Catholic faith and our heritage. I would like to share a couple of impressions of my visit to Ireland and Scotland. The history of these countries is long and complicated; but at every step, the Catholic Church was affected. Visitors are usually surprised that Dublin, the capital of Ireland, has no grand and ancient Catholic cathedral. There are two churches in the city with the title cathedral, but they are no longer Catholic (they are administered by the Church of Ireland). Catholics have what is a called a pro-cathedral (a provisional cathedral), an unassuming and out of the way parish church that functions as a cathedral. All of this is the result of a turbulent history involving church and state relations and an effort, in the past, to remove popish trappings from England, Ireland, and Scotland. One might say it all began with Henry VIII s dissolution of the monasteries between 1536 and People wonder why there are so many ruined churches and monasteries in England and Ireland. The answer is that these ancient structures were systematically suppressed and destroyed, with their income and assets appropriated by the Crown. Reformation was in the air, and the destruction of these religious houses moved to Ireland, Wales, and Scotland over the next century. In fact, by the end of the 16 th century, monasticism had almost entirely disappeared from those nations whose rulers adopted Protestant confessions of faith (Ireland being the only major exception). The Reformation in Scotland was largely due to one man, John Knox ( ). Knox started as a Catholic priest, but he soon fell under the sway of church reformers in Scotland. During the reign of Mary Tudor in England, Knox moved to Geneva where he studied under John Calvin, a fiery and radical Protestant reformer. Knox took Calvin s theology back to Scotland as Presbyterianism, or, the Church of Scotland. He stripped St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh of all ornamentation, removed the stained glass, whitewashed the church, destroyed the altar, and put the pulpit center stage. Knox s followers did their best to eliminate Catholicism from the country, and they were fairly successful. Today, about 20% of the population is Catholic. While traveling through Ireland and Scotland, I couldn t help but think of the current troubles of the Catholic Church in the United States. A study of history shows that we have survived the worst possible times. And, as William Faulkner famously said, we shall not merely endure, we shall prevail. Msgr. Patrick S. Brennan

The group will meet 1x/month and will be using a video series lesson from Dynamic Catholic and will be studying the Gospel of John. Altar Server Training: Any student, grades 4 and up, who is interested in becoming an altar server or wanting a refresher, are asked to call the parish office with their name and phone number. Training will be Tuesday, October 30 and Tuesday, November 6. The sessions are from 6:30-8pm in the Cathedral. Students only need attend one session. Parents are encouraged to stay for the training. Children s Liturgy of the Word: We are looking for volunteers to help teach Children s Liturgy of the Word at the 9 am Mass. Leaders are given materials and a teaching guide that makes educating our 4 year olds to fourth graders a rewarding and easy experience! Parish Religious Education Program: Please sign up for the sacramental preparation of your children, Grades 1 & 2: First Reconciliation and First Communion. Registration forms are at the Cathedral entrances. We are in need of more teachers/catechists to partner in teams of two. There are about 25 classes a school year, ending the first Sunday in May. We are gearing up for our Christmas giving season and would like to enlist all levels of knitters to join the effort to provide warm scarves to those we serve.
