However Jesus had no authority in the sense of formal authorisation: he didn t belong to an organization, he hadn t been licensed to preach and minister by the authorities of his day (the opposite in fact), he had no formal or official title. Which means that the authority they recognised came from insight, in-sight, looking beneath the surface, recognising what lay in his depths. It was not authorisation that they recognised, but authenticity. And so the Gospel invites us too to be people of in-sight, people who look within, people who recognise the deep authority of those in our lives, in our world, who in fact are prophets of God even though they don t formally carry that title. 3 3 RICHARD ROHR S DAILY MEDITATION BEARING THE DIVINE FINGERPRINT If you would learn more, ask the cattle, seek information from the birds of the air. The creeping things of earth will give you lessons, and the fishes of the sea will tell you all. There is not a single creature that does not know that everything is of God's making. God holds in power the soul of every living thing, And the breath of every human body. Job 12:7-10 It is strange that we should have to write, assert, or try to prove what should be obvious: everything bears the divine fingerprint, footprint, and "similitude." The people from the three monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam should have been the first to enjoy this shared truth, beauty, and goodness. These are the ones who assert that "there is one Creator God who made all things"! Yet it has usually been the Native religions, the Hindus, the Jains, the Buddhists who have more honoured the other creatures and the natural world. The monotheistic religions (also known as the Religions of the Book), each in their own way, overly intellectualised those very books. They became fodder for scholars and sectarians instead of opening paths to transformation for everybody. We usually gutted them of cosmic significance, reflecting their time in history, and used scriptures to assert our tribal superiority over other religions and certainly over all other creatures, so much so that they could not really see what should have been clear, obvious, and compelling. Some have called it an idolatry of words. Defying any logic or "theologic," many seem to assume that to grant goodness or glory to the creatures was to take away from the glory or goodness of the One who created them! Others think that to grant any conception of soul to creation itself, to animals, or anything beyond human beings, is to lessen our own eternal soul. Yet our very words "animate object" might reveal a deeper intuition: animate comes from the Latin anima, breath or soul. Do wise people not usually intuit the soul of things? In fact, might that be the very nature of wisdom? My guess is that human consciousness was just not ready for it yet, except for the mystics and poets in every group and old souls like Job, whose words you read above. For most of human history we have largely been at a survival level, and thus dealing with an infantile or at best adolescent psyche. A young soul has not yet developed enough empathy, healthy selfcriticism, and self-confidence to see beyond itself as the reference point and the only point of interest--even to God. And if God is not interested or in love with nature, why should we be? (I was told recently that the very word "empathy" was not in English dictionaries till the year We only have words for things that name what we have experienced.) Adapted from Fr Richard Rohr ofm: "Every Creature Is a Word of God," Radical Grace, CATECHISTS FOR OUR STATE SCHOOLS We still have an urgent need for: Secondary School Catechists for Killara High on Friday mornings Classes start next week so please let Sue-Anne know (see p.2) if you can help.

4 A special feast day: Candlemas 4 Our church year is marked by various feasts which each tell the story of God s love in a different way. One of the feasts we would like to celebrate in a special way is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (Candlemas) (2nd February). This ancient feast, commemorating the prophet Simeon s recognition of the child Jesus (at his presentation in the Temple) as the light of God s people, is celebrated 40 days after Christmas. The liturgy begins with the lighting of candles which are brought into the church in joyful procession as Mass begins. MASS (AND THE BLESSING OF CANDLES) will be celebrated at the 9:15am Mass at Holy Family Church at Lindfield this Monday 2nd February (a celebration for the whole parish). Please note that we gather outside the church for the rite of blessing of candles which takes place at the very beginning of the celebration. Mass this Monday will be celebrated at the main altar. We invite everyone to bring along a candle to be blessed. Later during the Mass we will invite you to bring your candle forward to be placed on the altar to burn during the Eucharistic Prayer, reflecting the presence of our Eucharistic Lord as light of the world. At the end of Mass we invite you to take your candle home to be part of your space for prayer in your home over the next twelve months. So that the candle can sit comfortably on the altar can we ask that you bring a candle which has a base at least 5cm (2 ) wide. SYNOD ON THE FAMILY HAVE YOUR SAY In October 2015 the second phase of the Bishops Synod on the Family called by Pope Francis will take place in Rome. Pope Francis has asked for a Church-wide consultation to take place in preparation for the Synod. The Australian Catholic Bishops have provided an online survey so that members of the Church can make their contribution. Please go to to complete the survey. If you don t have access to the internet please contact the Parish Office for a printed copy. Surveys must be completed by 10 February. MONTHLY CHILDREN S MASSES: A reminder that in our parish we have two Children s Masses each month: * on the first Sunday of the month at the 9:15am Mass at Killara (so that s today Sunday 1st February) * on the second Sunday of each month at the 10:15am Mass at Lindfield (next Sunday 8th February). ENROLMENT FOR PREPARATION FOR FIRST RECONCILIATION The (online) enrolment process is open from 2nd-15th February. Please go to the parish website ( and click on Sacraments Children s Sacraments to find the document explaining the enrolment process.

5 A quick word......about words... 5 Henri Nouwen once wrote 1 : We live in a world where words are cheap. Words engulf us. In advertisements, on billboards and traffic signs, in pamphlets, booklets, and books, overhead projectors, flip charts, screens, s and Facebook 2. Words move, flicker, turn around, grow bigger, brighter and fatter. They are presented to us in all sizes and colours but finally we say, Well, they are just words. Increased in number, words have decreased in value. Their main value seems to be informational. Words inform us. We need words in order to know what to do or how to do it, where to go and how to get there. The problem, as Nouwen points out, is that in a world where we re engulfed by words, when we come to the Eucharist we re in a very poor position to encounter the Word of God in any life-giving and life-changing way. We instinctively approach even the Scriptures as words that inform us. (That) tell a story and since we ve heard these words before many times we scarcely pay attention to them. 3 But the Word of God is meant to convey more than information. If we want to know what it s meant to do we could do no better than turn to the famous story of the disciples (unknowingly) encountering the risen Lord as they walked on the road to Emmaus. They were dejected and without purpose but through their encounter with this man and his words their hearts burned within them, they were changed: the Word became flesh for them. Nouwen gives a powerful and illuminating example of how words can do more than merely convey information: When someone says to me, I love you, or I hate you, I am not just receiving some useful information. These words do something in me. They make my blood move, my heart beat, my breathing speed up. They make me feel and think differently...these words have power to heal or destroy me. 4 This is the challenge we face with regard to how we are going to listen to and encounter the words which we believe to be the Word of God, above all as they are proclaimed to us at Mass in the readings. Are they merely stories, information that we ve heard before; or like those disciples on the road to Emmaus do we open ourselves to Jesus walking with us, speaking to us personally; are we open to these perhaps familiar words doing something unfamiliar in us, transforming, changing, unsettling, challenging,us? Will our hearts burn within us or will our minds switch off? In an age of so many words we face the challenge of remembering that the Word of God is not in the first place a book but a person: 1 With Burning Hearts. Orbis Book, NY, 1994, p These last two examples inserted by the editor as they weren t around when Nouwen wrote these words. 3 Nouwen. op. cit., p ibid. p. 58

6 6 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God...the Word became flesh and dwelt amongst us. (John 1:1;14 ) Something which has existed from the beginning, that we have heard, and we have seen with our own eyes; that we have watched, and touched with our hands: the Word, who is life this is our subject. (1 John 1:1) That Word, who was made flesh, changed the lives of the disciples on the road to Emmaus by the words he spoke. And our challenge, when the Word is proclaimed at Mass, is not to hear with the mind familiar and worn out words, but to encounter afresh in our heart Jesus, the Word made flesh. Nouwen reminded us of the heart-thumping power of the words I love you. Our own challenge is to allow the Sunday words of the Scriptures to have the same heartthumping effect on us. And it all depends on whether we listen only with our mind to what may seem old and familiar words, or whether we listen with our hearts to a new and personal Word addressed to us; whether we re only listening for new information, or whether we re listening for a Person who wants to speak to us as we walk along our own road to Emmaus. Fr Colin CAN YOU HELP US? ADVERTISING IN THE PARISH BULLETIN The advertisements in our parish bulletin are an important supplement to our parish income. We currently have a number of vacant advertising spots. Could your business advertise in our bulletin? Or perhaps you could encourage someone you know to do so? Please help us to maintain and even increase - this source of parish finance. If you can help please contact Philita in the Parish Office. EXTRA PARKING FOR THE WEEKEND MASSES AT LINDFIELD A reminder that as you enter the parish grounds from Balfour Lane you can now also turn left into the lower school playground to find additional on-site parking. O that today you would listen to his voice! Harden not your hearts as at Meribah, as on that day at Massah in the desert when your forebears put me to the test; when they tried me, though they saw my work At Masses at which the Psalm is sung the response is: If today, you hear God s voice, harden not your hearts. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (all bow at the following words in bold): and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. 10 10 PARISH RETREATS AT TARRAWARRA ABBEY 2015 What are these retreats? The retreats take place at Tarrawarra Abbey (an Abbey of the Cistercian Order) amidst the beautiful landscape of the Yarra Valley just outside Melbourne. The monks operate a beef farm and the Abbey is set on 2000 acres of rolling countryside. The format of the retreat is a simple one. Its goal is to tap into the richness of the spiritual tradition to be found in monastic life and to take some of that away with us. Each day we join the monks in the abbey church on a number of occasions for the praying of the daily Office, from morning prayer, through the short offices that punctuate the day, to the sunset Office of Vespers and finally the gentle Office of Compline which sends us off to bed. There are two inputs each day, one on prayer, the other on some aspect of the monastic tradition of spirituality that we can tap into for our own life. We try to keep a spirit of silence during the parts of the day when we are not gathering but each evening we have a convivial time as a retreat group for pre-dinner drinks and a good chat over the evening meal. I do hope that you will consider coming. I have run these parish retreats for quite some years and those who take part have always found it a rich and renewing experience. In addition, for those who wish, we also have on-going parish group for those who taken part in these retreats which gathers once per month for prayer, some input and a meal. The retreats for 2015 will be as follows: Wednesday afternoon 8th Tuesday morning 14th April. This retreat is now fully booked. Wednesday afternoon 15th Tuesday morning 21st April. There are spaces available on this retreat. (Easter Sunday falls on 5th April and school holidays run from 3rd April to 20th April). If you are interested please let me know as soon as possible. Fr Colin DATES FOR SACRAMENTAL PROGRAMMES IN 2015 A reminder that the letter giving all the details and dates for our Sacramental Preparation Programmes for First Reconciliation, Confirmation and First Holy Communion in 2015 is available on the parish website ( under Sacraments Children s Sacraments.

11 11 MAKING THE MOST OF OUR PARISH WEBSITE A reminder of several sections to check regularly: * Stop Press/Funeral Details (which can be found under the main tab News and Events ). This section enables us to give details of funerals, parish events, or last minute cancellations of events which were not known at the time of the bulletins publication. Please check this section regularly. * News (which can be found under the main tab News and Events ) contains links to articles of interest. It is updated regularly. * Events/Diary (which can be found under the main tab News and Events ) gives details of upcoming parish events and functions as a parish diary. Events are removed automatically once they take place so that this section remains current. ROSARY A reminder that the weekly Rosary on Wednesdays at Lindfield will now be prayed at 8:50am rather than after Mass. EXPOSITION OF THE EUCHARIST Lindfield resumes this week. for half an hour after the 9:15am Mass on Thursdays at SCHOOL MASS At the 9:15am Mass at Lindfield this Thursday 5th February we welcome the children from our Parish School as they celebrate Mass to begin the new school year. WEEKDAY MASS AT LINDFIELD is now celebrated in our new Lady Chapel, a more intimate space which enables us to gather more closely as a community for the celebration of the Eucharist - the Lord s Supper. Please sit in the chapel for Mass rather than in the seats of the main body of the church so that we can very visibly be the one Body of Christ gathered to celebrate and receive his eucharistic body. Now you together are Christ s body, and his members. It is your mystery which lies on the altar. When you stretch out your hands to receive the Eucharist you hear the words The Body of Christ and you answer Amen. So, be the body of Christ. that your Amen may be true. St Augustine

Why have we allowed ourselves to be convinced that lying on our back on a summer s day in the cool long grass, staring up at the clouds, is a waste of time? Who says that rest is idleness? (From A Thousand Paths to Long Life ) Say it with flowers... We have the very sad situation at Lindfield that we now have only two people on the roster providing flowers for the church. Several other people kindly provide money for flowers. The flowers beautify the church as the place where our community gathers, where the Eucharist is celebrated, where God is worshipped. Surely we can have a full roster for the providing of flowers? (We have sufficient people to arrange the flowers). Also, as you can see, we have two vases in the new Lady Chapel (weekday chapel). We would also like a roster for the provision of some arrangements for these vases to honour Our Lady. If you would be willing either to drop flowers off on a rostered day, or to provide a donation to purchase flowers on a rostered basis, please fill in this form and return it as soon as possible or contact the Parish Office. 13 13 Jesus, Moses, and an old man go golfing. The first one to tee off is Moses. He smashes the ball and it is heading right for the water hazard before the green. Moses raises his club, the water parts, and the ball makes it to the green. Jesus gets up to swing, cranks it out, and it is headed for the water hazard. Jesus closes his eyes and prays. The ball skips across the water and lands on the green two feet from the hole. The old man's turn comes and he drives the ball. The ball looks like it is going to drop directly into the water. A fish jumps from the water hazard swallowing the ball, as an eagle drops from the sky, grabbing the fish. As the eagle flies over the green, a bolt of lightning strikes the eagle, making it drop the fish. As the fish hits the green, it spits out the ball and the ball falls into the hole, making a hole in one. Jesus looks at Moses and says, "I really think I'm leaving Dad at home next time!" 15 15 (continued from page 16 ) group-think, but through deep interiority and prayer inside one s own heart. It is no accident either that Jesus so often warned: Do not be amazed! and that when he looked for guidance he lifted his eyes towards heaven, not towards the crowd. He knew the dynamics of Satan. When crowds are under the grip of amazement there is very thin line between wanting to make someone their King and wanting to crucify that same person. In the novels of Czechoslovakian writer, Milan Kundera, there is invariably one major character, often an artist, whose role it is to resist something Kundera likes to call the great march, namely, a group-think that inflames itself through moral rhetoric and then sets off marching on some kind of crusade. For Kundera there is always something frightening, blind, indeed satanic, in any great march, no matter what the cause. When group energy takes over, he fears, there will soon be a crucifixion done in God s name. Jesus, its seems, agrees. The devil and satan are real. We should not be naive on this score. But the real danger is not little girls writhing on a bed and throwing up mustard. Rather it is our hearts writhing in a paranoia and a jealousy that tears us apart from each other and crowds writhing in a sick energy that wants, in God s name, to spill some blood. Fr Ron Rolheiser (from the Centre for Liturgy, University of St Louis) Please support those supporting us Lord, in Jesus your Son, you restored to us the gift of everlasting life. Grant that life to: Please pray for the repose of the soul of Denise Mohr of our parish who died recently. The Funeral Mass for Denise was celebrated last Thursday at Killara. Please pray for the repose of the soul of Terri Newton of our parish who died during the week. The Funeral Mass for Terri will be celebrated this Wednesday at 10:30am at Killara. Recently deceased: Vilma Roberts. Anniversary: Genevieve Hancock, Mary Hawkins. Please pray for those who are sick: Therese Playoust, Vincent Montano, John Cook, Sue Knight, John Cook, Winslow & Gordon Andrew, Kingsley Dunn, George & Stanley Tan, Peter Barr, C L.Ho, John MacNamara, Adrian Selwyn, Tanya P, Victor Maher, Mathew Dwyer, John and Michael Swan, Che Concepcion, Andrew S, Lyn Chant, Yoan Vargas.

16 16 REFLECTING ON THIS SUNDAY S SCRIPTURES.. Jesus rebuked him and said, "Quiet! Come out of him!" The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him. SATAN AND THE DEVIL We need a healthier theology of satan. Rather a strange thing to say! Can there be a theology of the devil? Perhaps not in the strict sense. Theology after all is meant to be words about God (Theos-God; logos-word). However in the wider sense of the word (theology as a view of something through the prism of faith) we need a theology of the devil. Why? Because for the most part, today, the devil is either naively ignored, as some dark superstition from the past, or is falsely attended to, as some underworld force that can throw little girls into mustard-spitting convulsions, as in the infamous movie, The Exorcist. Indeed, most people today do not even believe in the devil, either as a person or a force. What is to be said about the devil? The gospels name the forces of hell in two ways: Sometimes they speak of the devil (diabolus) and at other times of satan (satanus). Are the terms synonymous? Not exactly: Diabolus means to divide, to tear apart; whereas satanus, most curiously, means almost the opposite, it connotes a frenzied, sick, group-think that accuses somebody or something. In essence what the gospels tell us is that the powers of hell, satan and the devil, work in two ways: Sometimes they work as the devil by dividing us from God, each other, and from what is best within us. Sometimes they work in just the opposite way, as satan. Here they unite us to each other but through the grip of mob-hysteria, envyinduced hype, and the kind of sick unity that makes for gang-rapes and crucifixions. And at the root of both lies the same thing, envy. It is no accident that, among the ten commandments, only envy has two inscriptions against it. Jealousy is the devil s tool and satan s weapon. Through envy, the devil works at dividing us from each other. From envy we get the kind of paranoia, jealousy, sense of btext Box: He, himself, always drew his vision and energy from a deeper source, his Father s will.eing wronged, and bitterness that dissipates families, communities, churches, and whole nations. The devil tears us apart. Satan, using the same weapon, works differently. As satan, envy unites us so as to put us into the frenzied, mad pitch of the lynch mob, the crowd hell-bent on crucifixion. Satan uses envy to pit the crowd against an outsider. Thus, the devil causes us to be distant and distrustful of each other, whereas satan that causes us to be caught up in a sick unity that comes of scape-goating, vicious gossip, and the kind of group-hysteria that leads to bloodletting. The devil is always using envy to divide the house, whereas satan is always using envy to gear the whole house up for a crucifixion. In Jesus we see the opposite. The first word out of his mouth ( metanoia ) is a word uttered against the power of the devil: Be un-paranoid, do not let envy and suspicion divide you from each other, God, and what is highest inside yourself! Everything else Jesus says and does is intended precisely to lead us beyond division, dissipation, and being apart from each other. The kingdom he preaches is about coming together (the opposite of the devil). As well, nearly everything that Jesus says and does is anti-satan. He resists always the amazement of the crowd, group-hysteria, and the type of hype (even when it is in his favour) that wants to over-exult someone and kill someone else. He, himself, always drew his vision and energy from a deeper source, his Father s will; known, not through (continued on page 15 )
