3 (Sunday) Devotion Title: [To Love Well, Get Emotionally Recharged] When your emotional tank is empty, you re unable to keep on loving people. You just give up! You are overwhelmed and feel inadequate. You tend to get angry with the ones you love the most. You try to avoid people, and you see them as problems. You dream of getting away. David had this problem. He said, If only I had wings like a dove I would fly away and find rest (Psalm 55:6 GW). To keep on loving people, you have to keep your emotional tank full, because when it gets low, it s going to make a difference in your relationships. The Bible has three suggestions for recharging emotionally: Solitude. You need time alone. Today s verse tells us Jesus frequently withdrew from crowds when he needed to recharge himself emotionally. In this case there was so much hustle and bustle, Jesus told the disciples to come apart for a while (Mark 6:31 KJV). You either come apart or you will come apart. You need times of solitude. Recreation. There are certain things that recreate energy and enthusiasm for life. For you it may be hobbies, a sport, a craft, or games. Experiment, find out what recharges you emotionally, and then make time for it. One of my favorite verses says, The Son of Man came, enjoying life (Matthew 11:19 Phillips). Jesus was the most intensive, ministryoriented person that ever lived, but he enjoyed life. Whatever your job is when you re giving out to others, it costs and exhausts. You need play time. Laughter. Being cheerful keeps you healthy (Proverbs 17:22 TEV). Studies prove that when you laugh, it increases the number of T-cells, which raises your immunity level, which produces endorphins in your brain. Humor has beneficial effects! 2

4 God has given us the gift of laughter, and we need to learn how to laugh. I ve talked to couples that were in serious conflict in their marriage. They would say, Someday we ll look back at this and laugh. I say, Why wait? Why not just laugh at it right now? Laughter is a load lightener, an emotional recharger, and a love rebuilder. Talk It Over What will have to change about your schedule or routine so that you can consistently experience solitude? What kind of recreation gives you more energy? How can you make it a regular part of your life? In what ways can you model a cheerful lifestyle for your family? 3

7 (Monday) Devotion Title: [You Can t Love Well When You re Exhausted] Have you ever felt like you don t have any more love to give? Love is exhausting. It s work to really love. Most people don t understand that their physical condition has a strong impact on their relationships and ability to love. It takes physical energy to listen to people, to put their needs first. Have you ever tried to appear like you re interested in your child when you re dead tired? You re not listening because it takes energy to listen. What happens to your relationships when you re run down? Little issues become big problems when you re tired. You re cranky, defensive, and critical when you re physically low. On Monday mornings I m usually drained, so my family knows Dad s cranky until I get my Monday nap, then I m back to my normal, sensitive, compassionate self! It s not a spiritual problem. I m just tired! What are some habits that physically refresh you? The Bible is full of them. Here are a few: Rest. It is senseless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, fearing you will starve to death; for God wants his loved ones to get their proper rest (Psalm 127:2 TLB). Rest is so important that God put it in the Ten Commandments: Every seventh day, you are to rest. If you re not taking a day off every week, you re breaking one of his commandments. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is get some rest. It s amazing how much better things look after a good night s sleep! Balanced diet. You made my body, Lord; now give me sense to heed your laws (Psalm 119:73 TLB). It s a no-brainer, but choosing fruits and vegetables over chips and cookies will give us more sustained energy. We know what to do. We just need to do it. 6

8 Regular exercise. Honor God with your bodies (1 Corinthians 6:20b NIV). Our bodies were made for activity. In Bible times they didn t have to exercise because they walked everywhere and did physical work. But today, in our sedentary culture, you really only have two choices: fatigue or fitness. If you choose fitness, it has to involve regular exercise. Talk It Over Why do your emotions so strongly affect the amount of physical energy you have, and vice versa? How can you create margin in your life so that you are getting more rest? Think of some ways that your family can get healthier together. Why is it easier to get healthier when you do it with other people? 7

9 ( 週一 ) 靈修題目 : [ 筋疲力盡時你不能好好去愛 ] 你有沒有覺得你沒有更多的愛可以給予? 愛是令人筋疲力盡的 真心去愛需要努力 大多數人不明白, 他們的身體狀況對他們的關係和愛的能力有很大的影響 需要體力來傾聽人們的意見, 把他們的需求放在第一位 當你疲 惫不堪的時候, 你有沒有嘗試過显得對你的孩子感興趣? 你没有在聽, 因為需要精力去傾聽 當你勞累過度時, 你的人際關係會發生什麼? 當你累了, 小問題就成了大麻煩 當你累了時, 你會變得暴躁, 有戒備心和挑剔 星期一早上我常常筋疲力盡, 所以我的家人知道爸爸易怒, 直到週一午睡以後, 我才可以回復正常, 敏銳, 富有同情心的我! 這不是靈命的問題, 我只是累了! 有什麼習慣能讓你神清氣爽? 聖經裡提到許多 舉例以下 : 休息 你們清晨早起, 夜晚安歇, 吃勞碌得來的飯, 本是枉然 ; 惟有耶和華所親愛的, 必叫他安然睡覺 ( 詩篇 127:2) 休息是如此重要, 上帝把它放在十誡中 : 每逢第七天, 你要休息 如果你不是每週休息一天, 那你就違背了祂的一條誡命 有時你能做的最屬靈的事情就是休息一下 夜晚好好睡一覺, 你 會發現許多事情都更容易处理了! 均衡飲食 你的手建立我 求你賜我悟性, 可以學習你的律令 ( 詩篇 119:73) 想吃薯片和餅乾的時候就選擇水果和蔬菜, 這將為我們提供更持久的能量 這是明擺著的道理 我們知道該怎麼做, 只要行出來就是了 8

11 (Tuesday) Devotion Title: [Loving Well Requires You to Be Spiritually Fit] It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:7-8a NIV). You cannot love people the way God loves you without God s power in your life, because human love runs out. But if you feel that nothing seems to be worth the effort, life seems to be futile or purposeless, or you find yourself blaming God for your problems, these are warning signs of spiritual burnout. You cannot love well when you are spiritually burned out. The Bible says in 1 Timothy 4:7, Take time and trouble to keep yourself spiritually fit (Phillips). How do you stay spiritually fit so you can love people? By building habits into your life that keep you spiritually renewed. Here are three habits to get you started: A daily quiet time. This is the reason why we never collapse. The outward man does indeed suffer wear and tear, but every day the inward man receives fresh strength (2 Corinthians 4:16 Phillips). Outwardly our body suffers wear and tear, but inwardly we can be spiritually renewed every day by spending time alone with God. I don t know what could help your life more than to begin the habit of a daily time with God. Start out with just 10 minutes a day. Find a place where you can be by yourself: the car, your bedroom or living room, the backyard, or even your office. Then pick a book of the Bible, and read a chapter a day. Read it, think about what you ve read, maybe write some things down. That s a habit that will keep you spiritually renewed. 10

12 Small group. A Christian without a small group is an orphan. You need a small group! The Bible says, Encourage one another daily (Hebrews 3:13a NIV). You need to get together in a small group at least weekly where you can share needs and problems, pray for each other, and develop friendships. Worship. Praise renews and rejuvenates. It builds up. Psalm 59:16 says, I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble (NIV). You need the emotional release and recharging that comes from singing. Put on some Christian music, and sing along. Then, watch how God restores your soul! Talk It Over Why is it hard to love others well when you are spiritually burned out? Make a plan right now for your quiet time: Where will you meet with God? What time of day? For how long? What will you read? What do you need besides your Bible? How might God want you to worship if you think you are not a good singer? 11

13 ( 週二 ) 靈修題目 : [ 好好去愛需要你在靈裡健康 ] 凡事包容, 凡事相信, 凡事盼望, 凡事忍耐 愛是永不止息 ( 哥林多前書 13:7-8 上 ) 如果沒有上帝在你生命中的力量, 你就無法以上帝愛你的方式去愛人, 因為人的愛終會枯竭 但如果你覺得似乎沒有什麼值得付出努力, 生活似乎是徒勞或無目的, 或者你發現自己因為自身的問題而責備上帝, 這些都是靈裡枯竭的警示信號 當你靈裡枯乾時, 你無法很好地去愛 提摩太前書四章七節中說 : 在敬虔上操練自己 你如何保持靈裡的健康, 從而能夠去愛他人呢? 答案就是要在生活中養成一些能夠讓你在靈命上不斷更新的好習慣 有三個習慣可以幫助你開始 : 每天安靜的時間 所以我們不喪膽 外體雖然毀壞, 內心卻一天新似一天 ( 哥林多後書 4:16) 從表面看, 我們的身體在毀壞, 但在內心, 我們每天都可以與上帝獨處使靈命得到更新 如果不是開始每天與上帝同行的習慣, 我不知道還有什麼可以幫助你的生活 從每天十分鐘開始 找一個可以獨處的地方 : 車裡, 臥室或起居室, 後院, 甚至辦公室 然後選一本聖經裡的一卷書, 每天閱讀一章 讀經, 想想你讀過的東西, 也許還可以做些筆記 這種習慣, 會讓你在靈命上不斷更新 小組或團契聚會 沒有小組的基督徒如同孤兒 你需要一個小組! 聖經說 : 天天彼此相勸 ( 希伯來書 3:13 上 ) 你需要在一個小組或團契裡面, 至少每週一次聚在一起, 分享你的需求和問題, 彼此代禱, 發展友誼 12

14 敬拜 讚美能夠更新和恢復活力, 帶來屬靈的益處 詩篇第五十九篇十六節說 : 我要歌頌你的力量, 早晨我要高唱你的慈愛 ; 因為你作過我的高台, 在我急難的日子, 作過我的避難所 你需要藉著唱詩讚美獲得情感上的釋放和充電 播放一些讚美詩, 跟著唱, 然後看看神如何在靈裡再次挑旺你! 生命反思 為什麼你在靈裡枯乾時很難愛別人? 現在為你的安靜時間做一個計劃 : 你將在哪裡與上帝見面? 一 天的什麼時間? 哪個時段? 你會讀什麼? 除了聖經, 你還需要 什麼? 如果你認為自己唱得不好, 上帝會如何要你敬拜? 靈修筆記 13

15 (Wednesday) Devotion Title: [Spiritual Growth Requires a Plan] Millions of Christians have grown older without ever growing up; they act as though spiritual growth is automatic. They may have a plan to save for retirement. They may have a plan for sending their kids to college. But they don t have a strategy for enriching their souls. They leave the single most important facet of human existence to chance! But a soul doesn t automatically grow to maturity any more than a baby automatically grows to physical maturity. You need to have a plan for feeding, exercise, education and especially potty training! if a child is going to grow up healthy, strong, and mature. A baby left on its own withers and dies. The same thing is true of your soul. Our world is full of people who have grown older but are still babies when it comes to spiritual maturity. Spiritual growth is not automatic, even for people who have opened their hearts to Christ. The writer of Hebrews sadly noted, You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn t know how to do what is right. Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong (Hebrews 5:12-14 NLT, second edition). Spiritual growth doesn t just happen. You have to have a plan! Talk It Over Where do you want to be a year from now spiritually? What is your plan for reaching that goal? What is the next step you need to take in your spiritual growth? How can you start using your gifts to serve the Body of Christ? 14

16 ( 週三 ) 靈修題目 : [ 靈命成長需要一個計劃 ] 很多基督徒在屬靈上還沒有長大就變老了 ; 他們生活行動, 就像是把靈性成長當作自然而然發生的一樣 他們有退休儲蓄計劃, 有讓孩子接受高等教育的計劃, 但他們沒有一個讓自己靈命豐盛起來的策略 在人類生存最重要的一個方面, 他們隨隨便便輕忽了! 然而靈命不會自動成長到成熟, 如同嬰兒不會自然成長到身體成熟 如果你想要自己的小孩長大以後能夠健康, 強壯, 成熟, 那麼你需要在餵養, 鍛鍊, 教育等方面有個計劃, 尤其是便盆訓練! 一個嬰兒沒有人照顧, 就會衰弱甚至死亡 你的靈魂也是如此 論到靈命的成熟, 我們的世界充滿了年齡越來越大但靈性仍然是嬰兒的人 即使是那些向基督敞開心門的人, 屬靈的成長也不是自動的 希伯來書遺憾地指出 : 看你們學習的工夫, 本該作師傅, 誰知還得有人將神聖言小學的開端教導你們, 並且成了那必須吃奶, 不能吃乾糧的人 凡只能吃奶的, 都不熟練仁義的道理, 因為他是嬰孩 ; 惟獨長大成人的才能吃乾糧, 他們的心竅習練得通達, 就能分辨好歹了 ( 希伯來書 5:12-14) 靈命成長不會自動發生 你必須有一個計劃! 生命反思 從現在開始的一年中, 你靈命成長的目標是什麼? 你實現這一目標的計劃是什麼? 你需要在靈性成長中採取的下一步措施是什麼? 你怎麼能開始用你的恩賜來服侍主和祂的教會呢? 15

18 (Thursday) Devotion Title: [Spiritual Growth Must Be Intentional] Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose (Philippians 2:12b-13 NIV). Growth in the human soul requires a commitment to grow. A person must want to grow, decide to grow, and make an effort to grow. Spiritual growth begins with a decision. It doesn t have to be a complex decision, but it does have to be sincere. When Jesus followers decided to choose his way, they didn t understand all the implications of their decision. They simply expressed a desire to follow him, and that was the beginning of an exciting journey of the soul. Jesus took that simple but sincere decision and built on it. In Philippians 2:12b-13, Paul offers insight into spiritual growth while speaking to people who already believe: Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose (NIV). Notice that it says work out not work on your salvation. There is nothing you can do to save yourself spiritually; Christ took care of that by his life, death, and Resurrection. The important thing to note is that God has a part in our growth but so do we. We must make an intentional effort to grow. Talk It Over What does it mean to work out your salvation? In what specific ways are you making an intentional effort to grow spiritually? What else might you do this year? Why do you think God requires effort on our part for spiritual growth? 17

19 ( 週四 ) 靈修題目 : [ 靈命成長必須是刻意的操練 ] 就當恐懼戰兢, 作成你們得救的工夫 因為你們立志行事, 都是神在你們心裡運行, 為要成就他的美意 ( 腓立比書 2:12 下 - 13) 一個人要想有靈命的成長, 就要在成長上面作出承諾 他必須渴望成長, 決心成長, 並付出努力追求成長 靈命成長始於決定 它不一定是一個複雜的決定, 但它必須是真誠的 當耶穌的門徒決定跟隨祂時, 他們並不了解這個決定的所有含義 他們只是表達了追隨祂的願望, 而這就是精彩的靈魂之旅的開始 耶穌接受了這個簡單但真誠的決定, 並以此為基礎建造他們 在腓立比書二章十二節下到十三節, 保羅向那些已經信主的人說 話時提供了對屬靈成長的洞察 : 就當恐懼戰兢, 作成你們得救的工夫 因為你們立志行事, 都是神在你們心裡運行, 為要成就他的美意 請注意, 是 行出並證明有效, 而不是 致力於並試圖影響 你的救贖 你沒有什麼可以在靈性上拯救自己 ; 基督通過祂的生, 祂的死和祂的復活成就了你的救恩 需要注意的要點是, 上帝固然有份於我們的成長, 我們也是有份於自身的成長 我們必須有意識地努力成長 生命反思 行出 work out 你的救贖意味著什麼? 你以何種具體方式操練靈命的成長? 你今年還能做些什麼? 在你看來, 上帝為什麼需要我們為靈命成長付出努力? 18

21 (Friday) Devotion Title: [You Can t Grow Spiritually in Isolation] Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near (Hebrews 10:24-25 NLT, second edition). Some of us hesitate to commit ourselves to developing an intentional plan of growth that requires accountability or relationship with others because we believe spiritual growth is a personal and private matter. We choose to believe each person develops in his or her own way at his or her own rate. This is an aberration from the truth. The idolatry of individualism has influenced even the way we think about spiritual growth. So much of the teaching on spiritual formation is self-centered and self-focused without any reference to our relationship to other Christians. This is completely unbiblical and ignores much of the New Testament. Christians need relationships to grow. We don t grow in isolation from others. We develop in the context of fellowship. Over and over again in the New Testament we find this basic truth: Believers need relationships with each other to grow! Hebrews 10:24-25 says, Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near (NLT, second edition). God intends for us to grow up in a family. Talk It Over Where in the Bible do you see people modeling authentic biblical community? How does accountability help you grow spiritually? What do you need from your spiritual family? What do you have to offer your spiritual family? 20

22 ( 週五 ) 靈修題目 : [ 你不能在隔離中成長 ] 又要彼此相顧, 激發愛心, 勉勵行善 你們不可停止聚會, 好像那些停止慣了的人, 倒要彼此勸勉 ; 既知道那日子臨近, 就更當如此 ( 希伯來書 10:24-25) 我們常以為靈命成長是個人的私事 因此我們中的一些人, 不願意致力於製定一個有意識的成長計劃, 而製定這樣的計劃需要負起責任或與他人建立關係 我們寧願相信每個人都按自己的情形成長 這偏離了真道 個人主義的偶像崇拜甚至影響了我們看待靈命成長的方式 關於靈命形成的教導很多都是以自我為中心和自我專注, 這些教導認為我們與其他基督徒無關 這完全不符合聖經, 也忽略了新約的大部分內容 基督徒需要關係來成長 我們不會孤立於別人而成長 我們在屬靈的團契中進步 在新約聖經中我們一遍又一遍地發現這個基本事實 : 信徒們需要彼此建立關係才能成長! 希伯來書十章二十四到二十五節說 : 又要彼此相顧, 激發愛心, 勉勵行善 你們不可停止聚會, 好像那些停止慣了的人, 倒要彼此勸勉 ; 既知道那日子臨近, 就更當如此 上帝特意讓我們在一個屬靈的家中成長 生命反思 在聖經中的哪些部分, 你看到人們模造真實的聖約共同體? 要負起責任, 這樣做會如何幫助你在靈命上成長? 從你屬靈的家中你需要得到哪些供應? 你又能為你屬靈的家提供什麼呢? 21

24 (Saturday) Devotion Title: [Repentance: How to Change Your Autopilot] Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think (Romans 12:2b NLT, second edition). Imagine riding in a speedboat on a lake with an automatic pilot set to go east. If you decide to reverse and head west, you have two possible ways to change the boat s direction. One way is to grab the steering wheel and physically force it to head in the opposite direction from where the autopilot is programmed to go. By sheer willpower you could overcome the autopilot, but you would feel constant resistance. Your arms would eventually tire of the stress, you d let go of the steering wheel, and the boat would instantly head back east, the way it was internally programmed. This is what happens when you try to change your life with willpower: You say, I ll force myself to eat less... I ll exercise more... I ll quit being disorganized and late. Yes, willpower can produce short-term change, but it also creates constant internal stress because you haven t dealt with the root cause. The change doesn t feel natural, so eventually you give up and quickly revert to your old patterns. There is a better and easier way: Change your autopilot. Change the way you think! The Bible says, Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think (Romans 12:2b NLT, second edition). The New Testament calls this mental shift repentance, which in Greek literally means to change your mind. You repent whenever you change the way you think by adopting how God thinks: about yourself, sin, God, other people, life, your future, and everything else. You take on Christ s outlook and perspective. 23

25 Talk It Over What has been the result in your life of trying to make changes on your own power? How can you take on new habits that will help you think more like God does? What is different between how God thinks about the things in your life you need to change and the way you think about them? 24

26 ( 週六 ) 靈修題目 : [ 悔改 : 如何改變你的自動駕駛儀 ] 只要心意更新而變化 ( 羅馬書 12:2 下 ) 想像一下, 你在湖上的快艇上, 將自動駕駛儀設置好準備向東行駛 如果你決定倒轉方向向西行駛, 你有兩種可能的方法來改變船的航向 一種方法是抓住方向盤, 用體力盡量地將其推向與自動駕駛儀設定要去的相反的方向 完全靠意志力, 你可以轉變自動駕駛, 但你會感受到持續不斷的阻力 你的手臂最終會因壓力而疲倦, 你放開方向盤, 船就會立即回頭朝東, 就是原已設定好的方向 當你試圖用意志力改變你的生活時, 就會發生這種情況 --- 你說 : 我會強迫自己少吃 我會多運動 我會改掉紊亂和遲到的壞習慣 是的, 靠意志力可以產生短期的變化, 但它也會帶來持續的內部壓力, 因為你沒有解決根本問題 這種改變並不自然, 所以最終你會放棄並迅速回到原來的模式 有一種更好更簡單的方法 : 更改自動駕駛儀的設置 就是改變你的思維方式! 經上說 : 讓上帝通過改變你的想法把你變成一個新人 ( 羅馬書 12:2 下 NLT 第二版直譯 ) 新約聖經稱這種心思的轉變為悔改, 這在希臘語中的字面意思是 改變你的心意 無論何時, 只要你接納上帝的意念, 改變你的思維方式, 你就是在悔改 : 在有關你自己, 罪, 上帝, 他人, 生命, 你的未來和其它一切的事情上面 你就會穿上基督, 接受基督的觀念和視角 25
