1 Advent Reflections Third Sunday of Advent The spirit of the Lord God has been given to me, for the Lord has anointed me. (Isaiah 60:1) Gaudete! Rejoice! In baptism the Lord has chosen you. Through your participation in the Eucharist God sends you to fulfill His mission on earth. Theme Sharing Rejoice Always (The Third Sunday of Advent ) The liturgy of the mass emphasizes on how we should live our daily lives in preparation for the second coming of Christ. The Church encourages us in the Entrance Antiphon to be happy at all times: Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice! For the Lord is near. In the first reading, God spoke through Isaiah, bringing good news to the Israelites. Isaiah proclaimed the year of favour from the Lord, a year of liberty from all kinds of captivity, in which all property forfeited were to be restored to their owners. Today s gospel of John details the testimony of John the Baptist that he was not the Messiah, but only the voice to prepare the way of the Lord as foretold by Isaiah. Bearing witness for Christ, John the Baptist told the Jews that Jesus was the real Messiah who was in fact living in their midst. He declared in all humility that he was not even worthy to untie the thongs of his (Jesus ) sandals. In the second reading, Paul teaches us the proper attitude to live as true Christians: rejoice always, never stop praying, but give thanks to God whatever happens in our lives. Christmas Play This year s Christmas play A Christmas Carol will be held on Christmas Eve December 24 th, 2011 in Upper Hall at 7:00 pm. The play tells the story of Ed, whose selfish and cold-hearted ways have ruined his closest relationships. On Christmas Eve, he falls into a deep sleep with troubling dreams. Will he wake up and change his ways or will it be too late? Participating in the play are the Sunday School, Catholic Family Fellowship, Young Adult Group, Youth Choir, St. Gabriel Choir, and the Mandarin Choir. All parishioners, relatives and friends are welcome to come for a great night! The 50th International Eucharistic Congress & Ireland Pilgrimage The 50 th International Eucharistic Congress would be held in June 2012 in Dublin, Ireland. In response to the call of our Holy Father, Fr. Joseph Nguyen would be the Spiritual Director, leading faithful of our Parish to participate in this international event from June 9 18, 2012, in communion with the universal church unity to pray to the Lord. Pope s World Day of Peace 2012 message Pope Benedict XVI has chosen the following theme for the celebration of the 45th World Day of Peace on January 1, 2012: Educating Young People in Justice and Peace. The theme engages an urgent need in the world today: to listen to and enhance the important role of new generations in the realization of the common good, and in the affirmation of a just and peaceful social order where fundamental human rights can be fully expressed and realized. In fact, there is a duty incumbent upon the present generation to prepare future ones, and creating for them the conditions that will allow these future generations to express freely and responsibly the urgency for a new world. The Church welcomes young people and sees them as the sign of an ever promising springtime, and holds out Jesus to them as the model of love who makes all things new (Ap. 21,5). They seem even to enjoy peace of mind when things happen according to their wish and liking, but if otherwise than they desire, they are soon disturbed and saddened. Differences of feeling and opinion often divide friends and acquaintances, even those who are religious and devout. To Be Continued Advent Know more Advent is a time of grace given us by the Church to prepare our hearts for Jesus coming. Don t miss out on the grace God is waiting to give you this Advent. Use Advent as a time to deepen your relationship with God, to prepare your heart for meeting God when you are called from this life and to prepare your heart for our celebration of Christmas. There is only one gift at Christmas, and that gift is Jesus. The shops are promoting Christmas because they make money out of it. Jesus said, Watch yourselves or your hearts will be coarsened with debauchery and drunkenness and the cares of life Instead Advent is a time to stay awake, praying at all times and to make more and more progress in the kind of life that we are meant to live: the life that God wants I would like to share with you this poem. Take time to think It is the source of power. Take time to read It is the foundation of wisdom. Take time to be quiet It is the opportunity to seek God. Take time to be aware It is the opportunity to help others. Take time to love and be loved It is God s greatest gift. Take time to laugh It is the music of the soul. Take time to be friendly It is the road to happiness. Take time to dream It is what the future is made of. Take time to pray It is the greatest power on earth. Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive all that is going to happen and to stand with confidence before the Son of Man. Stories Faith Sharing A Candy Maker s Witness A candy maker in Indiana wanted to make a candy that would be a witness, so he made the Christmas Candy Cane. He incorporated several symbols for the birth, ministry, and death of Jesus Christ. He began with a stick of pure white hard candy. White to symbolize the Virgin Birth and the sinless nature of Jesus, and hard to symbolize the Solid Rock, the foundation of the Church, and firmness of the promises of God. The candy maker made the candy in the form of a "J" to represent the precious name of Jesus, who came to earth as our Savior. It could also represent the staff of the "Good Shepherd" with which He reaches down into the ditches of the world to lift out the fallen lambs who, like all sheep, have gone astray. Thinking that the candy was somewhat plain, the candy maker stained it with red stripes. He used three small stripes to show the stripes of the scourging Jesus received by which we are healed. The large red stripe was for the blood shed by Christ on the Cross so that we could have the promise of eternal life. Unfortunately, the candy became known as a candy cane a meaningless decoration seen at Christmas time. But the meaning is still there for those who "have eyes P. 4 第 4 頁 to see and ears to hear."
