But a gentle light, an inviting light: a light that beckons, rather than the searching, scrutinising, burning light of a lighthouse. We lead by example, not by pushing; we lead by inviting, not coercing. We are to be a light like the light of dawn described in the first reading, a gentle light, not the scorching heat and light of the noonday sun. Fr Colin

3 3 RICHARD ROHR S MEDITATION: AT HOME IN MYSTERY Discernment (1 Corinthians 12:10), rightly understood, is not choosing between a total good and a total evil. Authentic wisdom is found at a much more subtle and nondualistic level. It is choosing between two partial goods. If you hold both sides seriously, within this space you can grow morally and begin to understand what really matters. That is the space in which you can go deep and learn mystery which is endlessly knowable. The source of spiritual wisdom is to hold questions and contradictions patiently, much more than to find quick certitudes, to rush to closure or judgment, as the ego and dualistic mind want to do. The ego wants to know it is right. It wants to stand on its own self-created solid ground not the mysterious solid ground of the abyss. This is why so much religion remains immature and is a hiding place for many control freaks instead of people trained in giving up control to a Loving Presence. A mature spiritual director will teach you how to negotiate the darkness, how to wait it out, how to hold on, how to live in liminal or threshold space. The dualistic mind just doesn t know how to do that. The dualistic mind cannot deal with paradox, but the nondual mind can. In fact, it almost relishes and revels in mystery. Nondual consciousness is at home inside of the abyss. I invite you to offer a simple, full-hearted Yes to the moment as it is, into the whole field, the full horizon of God and future. Choose every now in its wholeness. Whenever you choose or allow or surrender to the now, you can hold it in its entirety the good and bad, the satisfying and unsatisfying, both what fulfils and what disappoints you. Saying yes to paradox positions you in a place that is bigger than your pain, bigger than your own thoughts. Here the Divine Friendship holds you. This is nondual consciousness. PARISH FINANCE COMMITTEE newly refurbished hall at Killara. meets this Tuesday 7th February at 7:30pm in the Now that the hall is refurbished our various committees will alternate their meetings between our Lindfield and Killara venues, reflecting that we are one parish embracing two worshipping communities. 4 4 WHAT IS FUSION? We are a safe place for teens to socialise with each other on a Friday night, learning about their faith in a relevant, fun way. We share a meal together, play some games and talk about the things that matter to them. Our first meeting for 2017 will be on Friday 10th February in the Shirley Wallace Parish Centre above the Lindfield church. New members ALWAYS welcome. If you are in year 7 or 8 we meet from 5.30 to 7.30 pm. Students in years 9-12 meet from 7 pm to 9 pm. Future Meeting Dates for your diary: Friday 24th February Friday 10 March Friday 24th March Sunday 2 April (6-9pm) : Our last meeting of the term will be on a Sunday with Mass together at 6 pm and a games/trivia night (with dinner of course!) following Mass until 9 pm. PARENTS In last week s bulletin we talked about the 5 reasons why your child should attend youth group: 1. Teenagers need role models and mentors. 2. Teenagers need community. 3. Teenagers need mission: a sense of purpose. 4. Teenagers need to learn about their faith from each other. 5. Teenagers need a safe place to confess & confide about the troubles in their lives. This week we explore reason #2: Teenagers need community In an age of bullying, gossip, slander and hatefulness (which can destroy a teenager's self-identity), young people need other young people who can lift them up, encourage them and challenge them in all the right ways. Youth group brings together teens, forming a safe community to talk about life s challenges and see the benefits of their faith through service and commitment. PARISH YOUNG ADULTS GROUP The first gathering for the year takes place TODAY Sunday 5th February immediately following the 6pm Mass and will be held in the lounge in the Shirley Wallace Parish Centre on the first floor of Lindfield church. All young adults welcome a relaxed and informal time (including dinner). All young adults welcome. Gatherings generally take place every alternate Sunday night the full schedule of dates can be found on the parish website under Groups and Ministries Young Adults.

7 7 USA CATHOLIC BISHOPS REAFFIRM CATHOLIC POSITION IN RESPONSE TO LAST WEEK S PRESIDENTIAL ORDER ON IMMIGRATION Cardinal Blase Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago: "This weekend proved to be a dark moment in US history. The executive order to turn away refugees and to close our nation to those, particularly Muslims, fleeing violence, oppression and persecution is contrary to both Catholic and American values. "Have we not repeated the disastrous decisions of those in the past who turned away other people fleeing violence, leaving certain ethnicities and religions marginalised and excluded? We Catholics know that history well, for, like others, we have been on the other side of such decisions. Their design and implementation have been rushed, chaotic, cruel and oblivious to the realities that will produce enduring security for the United States." Bishop Robert W. McElroy of San Diego said the executive action was "the introduction into law of campaign sloganeering rooted in xenophobia and religious prejudice. Its devastating consequences are already apparent for those suffering most in our world, for our standing among nations, and for the imperative of rebuilding unity within our country rather than tearing us further apart. "This week the Statue of Liberty lowered its torch in a presidential action which repudiates our national heritage and ignores the reality that Our Lord and the Holy Family were themselves Middle Eastern refugees fleeing government oppression. We cannot and will not stand silent." Bishop Joe Vásquez of Austin, Texas, chair of the US Bishops Committee on Migration: "We strongly disagree with the Executive Order's halting refugee admissions. We believe that now more than ever, welcoming newcomers and refugees is an act of love and hope. We will continue to engage the new administration, as we have all administrations for the duration of the current refugee program, now almost forty years. We will work vigorously to ensure that refugees are humanely welcomed in collaboration with Catholic Charities without sacrificing our security or our core values as Americans, and to ensure that families may be reunified with their loved ones. "The United States has long provided leadership in resettling refugees. We believe in assisting all those who are vulnerable and fleeing persecution, regardless of their religion. This includes Christians, as well as Yazidis and Shia Muslims from Syria, Rohingyas from Burma, and other religious minorities. However, we need to protect all our brothers and sisters of all faiths, including Muslims, who have lost family, home, and country. They are children of God and are entitled to be treated with human dignity. We believe that by helping to resettle the most vulnerable, we are living out our Christian faith as Jesus has challenged us to do."

11 GREAT NEWS ABOUT OUR HALL AT KILLARA 11 The renovation of the hall is now complete. The first two events to christen the hall will be the morning tea following our first Healing Mass of the year this Friday 10th February (which therefore now returns to Killara as its venue) and the first meeting of the Parish Pastoral Council for the year on Tuesday 14th February. Amongst other things the hall is now air-conditioned and so will be a comfortable gathering space in both hot and cold weather. Regrettably we had no offers to cover the cost of new chairs for the hall. A reminder of our Masses for February: OUR MONTHLY CHILDREN S MASSES * on the first Sunday of the month (today, Sunday 5th February) at the 9:15am Mass at Killara * on the second Sunday of the month (next Sunday 12th February) at the 10:15am Mass at Lindfield. WE DESPERATELY NEED YOUR HELP AS A CATECHIST FOR OUR STATE SCHOOLS: Because a few of our Catechists have found full time work, we are looking for a few more Catechists. Please contact Sue-Anne (sue-anne@lindfieldkillara.org.au). Making our two churches beautiful for the celebration of the liturgy - - providing/arranging flowers for the altar KILLARA: Each week, Killara Church has numerous generous volunteers who arrange flowers and clean the candles. We need more helpers to continue this tradition. No special skills or training is needed. Also, you may be able provide flowers on one or two rostered Sundays per year from your own garden. Or you may be able to donate the cost of the flowers for a given week. If you can help in any of these ways please or ring Mary Hor (marymhor@gmail.com or ). LINDFIELD: would you be able to provide flowers on one or two rostered Sundays per year from your own garden. Or could you donate the cost of the flowers for a given week Or would you be willing to be on a roster to arrange the donated flowers If you can help in any of these ways please Betty Harris (betty@honeypotmarketing.com.au)

12 12 Getting into the Mind and Heart of Pope Francis: Those who today always look for disciplinarian solutions, those who long for an exaggerated doctrinal 'security,' those who stubbornly try to recover a past that no longer exists - they have a static and inward-directed view of things. In this way, faith becomes an ideology among other ideologies. It is true that going out on to the street implies the risk of accidents happening, as they would to any ordinary man or woman. But if the Church stays wrapped up in itself, it will age. And if I had to choose between a wounded Church that goes out on to the streets and a sick, withdrawn Church, I would definitely choose the first one. We need to avoid the spiritual sickness of a Church that is wrapped up in its own world: when a Church becomes like this, it grows sick. If one has the answers to all the questions - that is the proof that God is not with him. It means that he is a false prophet using religion for himself. The great leaders of the people of God, like Moses, have always left room for doubt. You must leave room for the Lord, not for our certainties; we must be humble. I have a dogmatic certainty: God is in every person's life. God is in everyone's life. Even if the life of a person has been a disaster, even if it is destroyed by vices, drugs or anything else - God is in this person's life. You can-you must-try to seek God in every human life. Perhaps I can say I am a bit astute, that I can adapt to circumstances, but it s also true that I m a bit naive. Yes, but the best summary, the one that comes more from the inside & I feel most true is this: I am a sinner whom the Lord has looked upon. The thing the Church needs most today is the ability to heal wounds & to warm the hearts of the faithful; it needs nearness, proximity. I see the Church as a field hospital after battle. It is useless to ask a seriously injured person if he has high cholesterol & about the level of his blood sugars! You have to heal his wounds. Then we can talk about everything else. Heal the wounds...and you have to start from the ground up. I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security Nevertheless men & women are sacrificed to the idols of profit & consumption: it is the culture of waste. If a computer breaks it is a tragedy, but poverty, the needs & dramas of so many people end up being considered normal. If on a winter's night, here on the Via Ottaviano for example someone dies, that is not news. If there are children in so many parts of the world who have nothing to eat, that is not news, it seems normal. It cannot be so! And yet these things enter into normality: that some homeless people should freeze to death on the street this doesn t make news. On the contrary, when the stock market drops 10 points in some cities, it constitutes a tragedy. Someone who dies is not news, but lowering income by 10 points is a tragedy! In this way people are thrown aside as if they were trash.

15 15 (continued from page 16 ) : We see the same message, consistent and repeated, in the social doctrine of the Catholic Church. From Pope Leo XIII s Rerum Novarum in 1891 to Pope Francis recent Evangelii Gaudium, we hear the same refrain: While we have a moral right to own private property, that right is not absolute and is mitigated by a number of things, namely, we only have a right to surplus when everyone else has the necessities for life. Hence, we must always be looking towards the poor in terms of dealing with our surplus. Moreover, Catholic social doctrine tells us too that the earth was given by God for everyone and that truth too limits how we define what is really ours as a possession. Properly speaking, we are stewards of our possessions rather than owners of them. Implicit in all of this, of course, is the implication that we can be moral and healthy only when we view private ownership in a larger picture that includes the poor. We need, always, to be giving some of our possessions away in order to be healthy. The poor do need us, but we also need them. They are, as Jesus puts it so clearly when he tells us we will be judged by how we gave to the poor, our passports to heaven. And they are also our passports to health. Our health depends upon sharing our riches. 16 16 REFLECTING ON THIS SUNDAY S SCRIPTURES.. Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own. OUR NEED TO SHARE OUR RICHES WITH THE POOR We need to give away some of our own possessions in order to be healthy. Wealth that is hoarded always corrupts those who possess it. Any gift that is not shared turns sour. If we are not generous with our gifts we will be bitterly envied and will eventually turn bitter and envious ourselves. These are all axioms with the same warning, we can only be healthy if we are giving away some of our riches to others. Among other things, this should remind us that we need to give to the poor, not simply because they need it, though they do, but because unless we give to the poor we cannot be healthy ourselves. When we give to the poor both charity and justice are served, but some healthy self-interest is served as well, namely, we cannot be healthy or happy unless we share our riches, of every kind, with the poor. That truth is written inside human experience and inside every authentic ethical and faith tradition. For example: We know from experience that when we give of ourselves to others we experience a certain joy in our lives, just as when we selfishly hoard or protect what is ours we grow anxious and paranoid. Native American cultures have forever enshrined this in their concept of Potlatch, namely, their belief that, while everyone has a right to private property, there are real limits to how much someone may own. Once our wealth reaches a certain point we need to begin to give some of it away not because others need it but because our own health and happiness will begin to deteriorate if we hoard all of those possessions for ourselves. Jewish spirituality shares the same idea: Again and again in the Jewish scriptures, we see that when a religious leader or prophet tells the Jewish community that they are the chosen people, a nation specially blessed, that affirmation comes with the admonition that this blessing is not for them alone, but that, through them, all the nations of the earth might be blessed. In Jewish spirituality, blessing is always intended to flow through the person receiving it so as to enrich others. Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic spiritualities, each in their own way, also affirms this, namely that it is only in giving away some of our gifts that we ourselves can remain healthy. Jesus and the Gospels, of course, teach this repeatedly and without compromise: For instance, the Gospel of Luke, a Gospel within which Jesus warns us that it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of Heaven, nevertheless praises the rich who are generous, condemning only the rich who are stingy. For Luke, generosity is the key to health and heaven. In the Gospel of Matthew, when Jesus reveals what will be great test for the final judgment, his single set of criteria have entirely to do with how we gave to the poor: did you feed the hungry? Give drink to the thirsty? Cloth the naked? Finally, even more strongly, in the story of the widow who gives her last two pennies away, Jesus challenges us to not only give of our surplus to the poor, but to also give away some of what we need to live on. The Gospels, and the rest of the Christian scriptures, strongly challenge us to give to the poor not because they need our charity, though they do, but because our giving to them is the only way we can stay healthy.
