Zion Alliance Retreat Page 1 Retreat Sermon 3 Land to Get ( 要得之地 ) 1. Zion Alliance, Oct Scripture: Joshua 14: Now the men of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea about you and me. 7 I was forty years old.. 10 Now then, just as the LORD promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the desert. So here I am today, eighty-five years old! 11 I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then. 12 Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the LORD helping me, I will drive them out just as he said. 13 Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as his inheritance. 1.1 Introduction These two days, as we ponder on A New Horizon for Zion, we look at three trick bags from God: dealing with the not-yet, accepting the no-share, winning the to-get. ( 處理未得, 接納不得, 爭取要得 ). This morning, we come to the third kind of land, land to get. ( 要得之地 ) 1.2 A balanced and comprehensive perspective Life is multi-dimensional. Maturity is the ability to handle the multi-dimensional nature of life. In this retreat, we look at three dimensions of maturity. We look at each dimension individually. But that is only the starting point; we can t stop there. We must also understand their interaction. First, there is the land already but not yet. This is what God has definitely promised us, though it seems you haven t had it yet. Examples are victory in Christ, power over sin, and a life pleasing to God. Hold fast to such promise and live out that promise with joy and hope. God will give you strength to go through your temporary imperfection, and help you to strive towards the goal of perfection. Then there is land no-share. This is what God has not promised you, though we may want it very much, for example, advantages in life, in physical and intellectual ability. Accept what God has given you. Live in faith that He will make up for any disadvantages, and know He has a higher purpose for it. This will give you the patience to accept the impossible and you will not frustrate yourself in striving for something that is not for you.
Zion Alliance Retreat Page Danger of mis-applying 錯誤應用的危險 After understand these two dimensions individually, we need to understand their interaction and relationship. If not, we will run into two dangers. First, the danger of mis-applying. ( 錯誤應用的危險 ) For me, the issue of my height as I shared with you in the second talk is an issue of no-share. If I mistake it for an issue of already but not yet, I am in big trouble. Many issues in real life are not as obvious as my issue of height. They could be very subtle and their natures get easily mixed up. That is why we have that wise saying, God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, 欣然去接納那不可改變的 The courage to change the things I can. 勇氣去改變那可改變 And the wisdom to know the difference. 智慧去分別兩者 I would say in life, 30% of the test is on the first two, and 70% is on the last, the wisdom to know what I cannot change and what I can change. To gain this wisdom, there is no short-cut, but practice, practice, and practice, then God s grace, God s grace, and God s grace Danger of over-applying 過份應用的危險 Then there is the danger of over-applying. 過份應用的危險. Since it is already, I ll let Christ to take care of everything. Since it is no share, I should not do anything. So in either case, I won t do anything. Unknowingly, I start to escape and to avoid issues in life. This third piece of land that I will share with you this morning, the land to get, is to get us back on the balance and to complete the perspective. It is already, but it is also not yet, so there is still land to get. There are lands no share, but there are also lands God has a share for me. So there is still land to get. And we should ask God for those lands, then launch out to capture them. 1.3 Land to Get Jos 14:12 Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the LORD helping me, I will drive them out just as he said. 求你將耶和華那日應許我的這山地給我. 那裡有亞衲族人 並寬大堅固的城 你也曾聽見了. 或者耶和華照他所應許的與我同在 我就把他們趕出去 Normally, it should take the Israelites a few weeks to travel from Egypt to the Canaan border. It ended up 40 years because of the incidence at Kadesh-Barnia as recorded in Num At Kadesh-Barnia, the Israelites sent twelve spies to explore Canaan. After 40 days, the spies came back with a 10-to-2 majority report: Yes, the land is good but the people there is a big problem. They are huge, we can t fight them. The Israelites, upon hearing the report, rebelled against God, and God punished them. They would wander in the desert, 1 year for 1 day. So, 40 days means 40 years in the desert. Only those under the
Zion Alliance Retreat Page 3 age of 20 would enter Canaan, all others would die in the desert, except Caleb and Joshua, the two in the minority party who encouraged the people not to be afraid. (Num 13:30) Forty-five years later, Caleb came forward and asked Joshua, Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day. 1.4 To fight the Anakites Asking to fight against the Anakites is an difficult task. For they are giants. In Nu 13, when the 12 spies returned and reported, they said, We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them. Then there is the hill country, large fortified cities. It would be an uphill battle against very tough enemies The Spirit of Caleb. Christianity is not fatalism What a spirit of Caleb! To win the impassable. 迦勒的精神 : 跨越那崎嶇難越的 People who know Christianity partly, after hearing my first two sermons, may draw the wrong conclusion that Christian faith is escapism, fatalism, spirit of Ah-Q, and opiate of the people. No, not at all. The Christian faith fully acknowledges the fragility of human being as well as the power of God. With that power, there is always another battle to win, and another mountain to claim. In the Christian faith is the spirit to win the impassable in life, to fight for the land to-get. 1.5 The Anakites within I admire Caleb, not only because of the Anakites in the large fortified cities. Even more so is how he faced the Anakites inside him. (1) Fear. 恐懼的亞衲族人 Fear of the enemy. How not to be afraid of such enemies? Yet Caleb overcame the Anakite of Fear (2) Self-doubt. 無自信的亞衲族人 Caleb was now 85, 15 years older than Joshua. Since all other men of age over 60 had died in the desert, Caleb is the oldest among the few millions of Israelites. I am old. Can I really do it? Caleb overcame the Anakite of self-doubt. (3) Complacency. 貪圖安逸的亞衲族人 I m the oldest. By seniority, by past contribution, I am fully and most qualified for retirement and full pension. If a person is close to retirement in a company, what job does he or she pick? Easy job. So, why bother with such a difficult task. Caleb overcame the Anakite of complacency. (4) Passionless. 不再興奮的亞衲族人 I have fight all battles. The excitement of the first battle 45 years ago has long gone. All
Zion Alliance Retreat Page 4 battles will be the same. The excitement of the young Caleb has long faded away? Not at all. Caleb overcame the passionless Anakite. Not just to Caleb, indeed to all of us too. Isn t it true in many life crises, the Anakites outside are far less fearful than the Anakites inside: fear, self-doubt, complacency, and passionless. We have to deal with these Anakites for all of us and for Zion to move forward. We are blessed because we have Christ as our general, and the Holy Spirit as our power pack. 1.6 External Anakites for Zion For Zion Alliance, we for sure have our Anakites from without: Winning people for Christ, capturing human mind and thinking, and get them to submit to Christ are not easy. We are fighting the principalities of darkness. (Eph 6) We are competing with Hollywood, Hockey Night Canada, and the Rolling Stones for people s attention and interest. We are competing with Sunlife, ManualLife, Bay Street, and Wall Street to offer people security and assurance. We are competing with tour companies ( 康泰旅遊 ), Caribbean cruise, Florida vacation to offer people comfort and rest. How can we fight these competitions? No way. But we will fight them by the power of the Holy Spirit. Check Roman Internal Anakites of Zion But frankly, it is the inner Anakites in Zion that we should pay attention to. If we take care of these internal Anakites, God will take care of the external Anakites for us. (1) Fear. Fear of change. Growth means change, and change means risk. The way out is not to avoid change, but to ask for courage and due-diligence. 勇氣和謹慎 So as we venture into new ministry opportunities, new facility, and etc., we have to face change. Change means multiple possibilities and one decision. Multiple possibilities mean multiple opinions, which is good and necessary. But one decision means risk: risk of making the wrong decision and risk of disagreement. For the former, we ll ask God for courage and protection. For the latter, we ll ask God for maturity and grace. For both, we ask God to kill the Anakite of Fear in us. (2) Self-doubt. Zion Alliance is small. We have set back in the past. We have people leaving us. If Caleb decided not to take on the Anakates, he had all the valid reasons, so do we. Did Caleb know he was old? Of course. He did not ignore his old age, but he did not let his old age stop him either. We won t ignore our weakness, but we won t let them stop us either. We will hold tight to the not yet, yet already for a church. We are not yet, so we have weaknesses like the Philippian church. We are already, so we are all saints and the glorious body of Christ. (Rom 8:30) So we won t give up easily and just walk away. Christ has a glorious expectation on this body. So we won t serve with frustration. We won t serve like Jonah, grumbling all the way as he served. Rather we have a high view of this glorious body of Christ, and we serve with joy and thanksgiving.
Zion Alliance Retreat Page 5 Almost 10 years ago, when my children were about to enter university, my family bought one of those College Guide book. As a Chinese father, I can t stop myself looking up Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Princeton, top-notched universities, first class professors, tens of thousands of students. I have long forgot how these big schools were introduced in the book. But I remember one small college, a 460-student college by the name St John s, Santa Fe, New Mexico, a small no-body college that none of us here ever heard of. Yet I read these lines by a sophomore of this school, Our school is timeless and deathless. Its kingdom will have no end. It partakes most fully of being. Most schools just seem, our school is. What impresses me is the high view of the school by this student. It doesn t matter how small other people think of us. I have a high view of myself. If a student could have such a high view of his small school, shouldn t we, who are the glorious body of Christ, have a much more high view of ourselves. In fact, we do have many things to give thanks for this Church. For the good spread of young people, families, seniors among us. (A pastor was very impressed with this when he visited us one Sunday.) For the desire of the Word of God. For the many self-initiatives in serving each other, Let s kill the Anakite of Self-doubt, and hold tight to the No yet, yet already of the glorious church of Jesus Christ. (3) Complacency. We are warm, let s don t disturb the group. Growth means opening ourselves for new people. That means adapting to each other. It will disturb the warm environment, but it is our responsibility and also for our benefits, to accept new friends. (4) Passionless. What is a big challenge to a church? Keep the people excited in serving the Lord as days go by. I ve served in all departments and in all roles. I ve done many things more than once. They are all the same now to me. Let the new people do it. Keeping the old generals meaningfully employed is important. A test of character is if we can do an old job with fresh meaning and new excitement. We serve not because of fun ( 新鮮感 ), but because of a sense of mission and conviction ( 使命感 ). Let s kill the passionless Anakites. May the Lord grant us the spirit of Caleb, not for a week, but for many years to come. Though our Anakites are fierce, we will hold tight to the divine promise of not yet, yet already. We have inadequacy, but Christ has overcome. 1.8 Final conclusion These two days, we look at three aspects of maturity and growth. Land not yet, dealing with the imperfect, Land no share, dealing with the impossible, Land to get, dealing with the impassable.
Zion Alliance Retreat Page 6 But this is only a beginning, a very small beginning. The journey is yet to come. Before we part, let s remember: Maturity and growth is a life-long process. Let s be patient. Maturity and growth requires practice. Let s be diligent. Maturity and growth requires God s grace. Let s be humble.
