3 , SCRIPTURAL REFLECTION June 10, 2018 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. - Mark 3:25 Do our parish ministries complement each other or do they compete against each other? Is our parish One Body of Christ or a bunch of little, separate ministries controlled by human ego? The goal of all parish ministries is to bring people to Christ. All of our parish work IS TO BE for the GLORY of GOD S Name, not our own name. When I am involved in a ministry, is it for my ego, for the attention or for my Lord? PRAYER for VOCATIONS God, the source of creation and love, You invite each of us to serve You through this life which is Your gift. May Your grace encourage men and women to heights of holiness through service to the church as Priests, Sisters, Brothers and Lay Ministers. Make me an instrument to encourage others to give of themselves and challenge me to do the same. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 4 SAINT ANTHONY of PADUA FEAST DAY JUNE 13th Mass with the Blessing & Distribution of Saint Anthony Bread at 7am and 7pm Masses A light reception will follow the 7pm Mass in the dining room honoring Saint Anthony!! Saint Anthony of Padua is often seen holding in his arms the child Jesus, who appeared to Saint Anthony and spoke to him while sitting on his arm; with a lily, a symbol of purity and special healing benefits for the sick and a book, as he is a great orator and Doctor of the Church. The list of human concerns for which Saint Anthony is the patron are amazingly varied. The wonders attributed to Saint Anthony, in story and legend, are equally astounding. For instance, Saint Anthony was in two places at the same time. At his prayer, a donkey knelt before the Blessed Sacrament and after a dare by an unbeliever and after bored believers turned away, fishes lifted their heads above the water to listen as Saint Anthony preached to them. In his presence, a foot, severed by an ax, was rejoined to its leg. As a Franciscan, Saint Anthony is known for helping the poor. At his encouragement, Padua passed a law in 1231 to help debtors who couldn't pay their debts. Saint Anthony Bread is a term used for offerings made in thanksgiving to God for blessings received through the invocation and prayers of Saint Anthony. Different legends or stories account for this term of donation. By at least one account, it goes back to 1263, when it is said a child drowned near the Basilica of Saint Anthony, as it was being built. His mother promised that if the child was restored to her, she would give to the poor the amount of corn equal to the child s weight. Her prayer and promise were rewarded with the boy s return to life. This is why parents make a gift to the poor after placing a newborn child under the protection of Saint Anthony. At St Ann s, we honor the tradition of Saint Anthony Bread. Small loaves of bread are prepared and blessed then distributed at Mass. It is also a practice to donate to the Church or a religious Order in the honor of Saint Anthony. On Tuesday, June 13th, Saint Anthony s Feast Day, join us in praying for our Capuchin Franciscan Friars Province of the Stigmata of Saint Francis they journey in the footsteps of Saint Francis for it was Saint Francis whom Saint Anthony modeled his life. ACTIONS speak louder than words; let your words teach and your actions speak. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED... We are HELPING HOMELESS FAMILIES in HUDSON COUNTY this summer!! SAINT ANN CATHOLIC CHURCH is partnering with FAMILY PROMISE of Hudson County as a HOST CONGREGATION to PROVIDE SHELTER to HOMELESS FAMILIES JUNE 17th thru JULY 15th Family Promise provides emergency places to shelter and helps homeless families from Hudson County. The families will be staying in makeshift living quarters in the Hoboken Catholic Academy Gym. Currently, we are seeking volunteers to assist in the following areas: - Setting up/break-down the gym for families - Welcoming Families - Preparing Food nightly - Spending time after dinner mingling with the families and children playing with children - Overnighter to stay with families in gym - Floaters...people available to help when and where needed! Who Is Family Promise: Family Promise of Hudson County is a non-profit that shelters homeless families within Hudson County. What Do They Do: They provide emergency places of shelter as well as case management and connection to resources. Their goal is to help families find sustainable and successful housing solutions. Why Do They Do It: Currently, there is no other emergency shelter in Hudson County that houses the whole family. In many locations, fathers are not allowed to stay with the family. Currently, our area has no way to keep them together. A mother raising an adult son with disabilities would be separated because on paper, they are single adults. Family Promise of Hudson County will be able to keep these families together and can work with them to find a sustainable way back on their feet. We Need You! Volunteers are an integral part of the Family Promise model. Volunteers are needed for shifts of cooking dinner to eating dinner with our guests, activities time and even sleeping over! There are options for all types of volunteers. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer either during our Summer Hosting Event or directly for Family Promise, contact the Parish Office: THANKS to all who have signed-up to help us! More volunteers are needed...please pray on it... It is in giving that we receive...!
5 MISSION APPEAL WEEKEND: June 23rd/24th The second collection on the weekend of June 23 rd /24 th will be for the 2018 Missionary Cooperative Plan as presented by Rev Francis Perry Azah. Please take a few minutes to read about Rev Francis Perry Azah, his background and how our faith community can help the people of his Diocese at home. Rev. Francis Perry Azah who will be carrying out this year s Missionary Cooperation Plan. His Seminary Formation was in his home country Ghana, in St. Peter s Regional Seminary, Pedu, Cape Coast. Fr. Perry was ordained on July 19, 1997 for the Diocese of Ho, Ghana. He worked in various parishes in the Ho Diocese for nine years. Out of the nine years, he was a pastor for five years and also a youth chaplain before coming to the USA. In 2006, he came to the Archdiocese of New York and worked from that 2006 to 2016 as an Associate Pastor in various parishes. From 2016 to date he has been working in the Archdiocese of Newark; first in Our Lady of Fatima Parish in North Bergen, and currently, as a Chaplain in Hackensack University Medical Center. Here is a brief background of the Diocese of Ho, including its activities: The Catholic Diocese of Ho, Ghana, West Africa, was founded in 1994 when it was carved from the former Keta-Ho Diocese. The Diocese covers an area of 5,893sq km2. Most of it is situated in poor rural areas, where most of the people are peasant farmers. These areas have lagged behind the rest of the country in education, health and basic infrastructure. Because of this situation, the Diocese, when it was created, decided to make social development a major part of and tool for evangelization of the people. The Faith is relatively young. The faithful are mainly first and second generation Christians. In many areas, we preach the Word for the first time and the people are learning about Christ for the first time. Fortunately, response to the Faith is tremendously encouraging. The people are flocking to the Church. Some of the older people tend to remain in the Traditional Religion, but the young are converting to the faith. Thus, our congregation is mainly composed of young people. We have over 300,000 baptized in the Diocese. The challenges of the diocese are many, but we are determined to solve them. We focus on key areas: providing quality Catholic education, healthcare delivery and access to clean safe drinking water in the rural communities in our diocese. We do so because we believe in the holistic development of the human person. We have, therefore, made it part of our mission to provide these basic social projects to improve the standard of living in our rural communities. Thus, in addition to preaching the gospel and focusing on the New Evangelization, we also try to find a solution to this perennial water problem and its concomitant diseases by drilling boreholes (water wells) in our most affected communities to provide clean safe drinking water. The funds raised this year will be used in serving the folks in our communities. Participating in the 2018 MCP at Saint Ann Faith Community is very crucial in meeting our set goals. Our major source of funds for our missionary activities and for meeting the abovementioned goals is through the generosity of friends, participation in Mission Appeals and subsidy we receive from the Holy See. We express our deepest gratitude, in advance, for your generous support for our 2018 Missionary Cooperative Plan!
