3 SCRIPTURAL REFLECTION September 30, 2018 Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward. (Mark 9:41) Does your life reflect the life of Jesus? Remember, we were made in His image. We tend to forget this. When others see you, do they see the face of Jesus? When you look at others, do you see the face of Jesus In them? Remembering that we will be judged by what we do for the least among us, may we give generously and joyfully to support all those in need. PRAYER for VOCATIONS Almighty and eternal God, in Your unfailing love You provide ministers for Your Church. We pray for those whom You call to serve Saint Ann Church as Priests. Inspire in them a generous response. Grant them courage and vision to serve Your people. May their lives and service call Your people to respond to the presence of Your Spirit among us that, faithful to the Gospel and hope of Jesus the Christ, we may: announce glad tidings to the poor proclaim liberty to captives, set prisoners free and renew the face of the earth. Amen. PRAYERS for an INCREASE in VOCATIONS Please PRAY one OUR FATHER, one HAIL MARY and one GLORY BE for an increase in vocations for the Capuchin Franciscan Friars of the Province of the Sacred Stigmata of Saint Francis and to the Archdiocese of Newark. For more information, please visit or TAIZE PRAYER SERVICE Tuesday October 16th 7:30pm in the Church TAIZE is very powerful and beautiful prayer experience that includes simple chants, scripture and periods of silence and reflection with the altar illuminated with candles... it is a very powerful moving of the Spirit A great way to regroup and refocus during the change of seasons. Taizé music is very contemplative in nature, creating a peaceful and meditative experience of prayer unlike no other! We hope to see you there...bring A FRIEND! Go to for more details! The Secular Franciscans of Saint Conrad will sponsor a bi-lingual TRANSITUS PRAYER SERVICE, Wednesday October 3rd at 8pm, in church after the 7pm Mass. What is TRANSITUS? TRANSITUS is the annual celebration by Franciscans throughout the world of Saint Francis passing over from this life to the glory of heaven. The word "transitus" comes from the Latin, meaning passage or crossing. Saint Francis Feast Day Mass, Thursday October 4th 7pm Mass in Church All are invited to attend Mass on Thursday October 4 th at 7pm to commemorate the life of Saint Francis as we celebrate the Eucharist and join in praying for our Capuchin Franciscan Friars who have committed to walk in the path of Saint Francis, trusting in God s providence. During this month the faithful venerate the Blessed Virgin Mary especially under her title of Our Lady of the Rosary and make special effort to honor the Holy Rosary with group recitations and rosary processions. Saint Dominic de Guzman, the founder of the Order of Preachers, is the saint to whom Our Lady famously appeared and gave the prayers of the Holy Rosary to assist him as a spiritual weapon to combat heresy and lead souls back to the One, True Catholic Faith. To learn how to pray the Rosary, please go to: All are invited to join us every Wednesday at 6pm in the Church to pray both the Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.

4 VOCATION PRAYER CHALICE Dedicate one week to pray for Vocations to the Priesthood & Religious Life! We have begun a beautiful ministry of prayer for vocations: Vocation Prayer Chalice. Each Sunday at the end of Mass, a family or individual is presented with the Vocation Prayer Chalice, a candle, and a booklet with prayers for each day of the week. When we take the Prayer Chalice, we commit to pray each day on behalf of our parish for vocations. May our prayers help inspire those with a calling to religious life be attentive to the movement of the Holy Spirit within them, to step forward in faith and with generous hearts to wherever the Spirit leads them! It is a wonderful opportunity of prayer...prayerfully consider making it part of your Faith journey! The Holy Spirit works through us. To volunteer to pray with the Vocation Prayer Chalice, please call the parish office: or see Staci Zegler, Catechist after the 10:30am Mass or Fr Remo and your name will be placed on the schedule. 5 FEAST of the GUARDIAN ANGELS October 2nd The Story of the Feast of the Guardian Angels Perhaps no aspect of Catholic piety is as comforting to parents as the belief that an angel protects their little ones from dangers real and imagined. Yet guardian angels are not only for children. Their role is to represent individuals before God, to watch over them always, to aid their prayer, and to present their souls to God at death. The concept of an angel assigned to guide and nurture each human being is a development of Catholic doctrine and piety based on Scripture but not directly drawn from it. Jesus words in Matthew 18:10 best support the belief: See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father. Devotion to the angels began to develop with the birth of the monastic tradition. Saint Benedict gave it impetus and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, the great 12th-century reformer, was such an eloquent spokesman for the Guardian Angels that angelic devotion assumed its current form in his day. A feast in honor of the guardian angels was first observed in the 16th century. In 1615, Pope Paul V added it to the Roman calendar. Reflection: Devotion to the angels is, at base, an expression of faith in God s enduring love and providential care extended to each person day in and day out. Ref: Prayer to My Guardian Angel Angel of God, my guardian dear, To whom God's love commits me here, Ever this day, be at my side, To light and guard, Rule and guide. Amen. In the Parish Office!! BON APPETITO!! Key Moments of the Life of Saint Francis Francis Receives the Stigmata Today the Chapel of the Stigmata sits on the same sheer precipice where Saint Francis stood two years before his death. There he was swept up into the mystery of God s overwhelming love for him and for humanity. Saint Bonaventure, an early Franciscan leader and theologian, in his Life of Saint Francis, describes Francis as being more inflamed than usual with the love of God as he began a special time of solitary prayer on Mount La Verna in September Francis unquenchable fire of love for the good Jesus, Bonaventure writes, was fanned into such a blaze of flames that many waters could not quench so powerful a love (see Song of Songs 8:6-7). Saint Bonaventure goes on: While Francis was praying on the mountainside, he saw a Seraph, with six fiery and shining wings, descend from the height of heaven. And when in swift flight the Seraph had reached a spot in the air near the man of God, there appeared between the wings the figure of a man crucified, with his hands and feet extended in the form of a cross and fastened to a cross. Two of the wings were lifted above his head, two were extended for flight and two covered his whole body. When Francis saw this, he was overwhelmed and his heart was flooded with a mixture of joy and sorrow. He rejoiced because of the gracious way Christ looked upon him under the appearance of a seraph, but the fact that he was fastened to a cross pierced his soul with a sword of compassionate sorrow (Luke 2:35). When the vision disappeared, writes Bonaventure, imprinted on his body were markings that were no less marvelous. These markings were the stigmata the five wounds of Christ. What did Saint Francis experience? The simple servant of God had suddenly understood in a flash the unimaginable love of God, a love that holds nothing back from us not even God s only Son. Many religious thinkers see this as the secret of Saint Francis spirituality, namely, Francis profound appreciation for the overflowing love of God! His name was Francis He used to praise God the Artist in every one of God s works. Whatever joy he found in things made he referred to their maker. He rejoiced in all the works of God s hands. Everything cried out to him, He who made us is infinitely good! He called animals brother or sister, and he exhorted them to praise God. He would go through the streets, inviting everyone to sing with him. And one time when he came upon an almond tree, he said, Brother Almond, speak to me of God, and the almond tree blossomed. That is what Saint Francis of Assisi did and that is what he does for us once we are caught up in his life and teachings. He makes us blossom, wherever and whoever we are. We blossom because we see in Francis what could happen to us if we were to embrace the overflowing goodness of God revealed in everything that exists, and let that embrace change us.
