3 FEAST of the EXALTATION of the HOLY CROSS EVENING of PENANCE & PRAYER FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 14th ARCHDIOCESE of NEWARK Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, CSsR. invites all the faithful of the Archdiocese of Newark to an Evening of Penance and Prayer on Friday, September 14th at 7:30pm, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Newark, NJ. This evening is in reparation for and healing of all those impacted by the abuse crisis, particularly the victims and all of us that make up the Body of Christ. Cardinal Tobin is asking that we all participate in this evening and is encouraging ALL to make it a day of fast and abstinence. LET S PARTICIPATE as both a PARISH and members of our CATHOLIC FAITH FAMILY!! STIGMATA of SAINT FRANCIS Feast Day Monday September 17th Monday, September 17th is the Feast Day of the Sacred Stigmata of Saint Francis. The Saint Francis of Assisi Order of Secular Franciscans (OFS) invite ALL to a talk focusing on a Franciscan topic on this Feast of the Stigmata, 7pm at St. Francis Church, 308 Jefferson Street...ALL ARE WELCOME!! The EXALTATION of the HOLY CROSS Feast Day Early in the fourth century, Saint Helena, mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine, went to Jerusalem in search of the holy places of Christ s life. She razed the second-century Temple of Aphrodite, which was built over the Savior s tomb, and her son built the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher. During the excavation, workers found three crosses. Legend has it that the one on which Jesus died was identified when its touch healed a dying woman. The cross immediately became an object of veneration. At a Good Friday celebration in Jerusalem toward the end of the fourth century, according to an eyewitness, the wood was taken out of its silver container and placed on a table together with the inscription Pilate ordered placed above Jesus head: Then all the people pass through one by one; all of them bow down, touching the cross and the inscription, first with their foreheads, then with their eyes; and, after kissing the cross, they move on. To this day, the Eastern Churches, Catholic and Orthodox alike, celebrate the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on the September 14 th, the anniversary of the basilica s dedication. The feast entered the Western calendar in the seventh century after Emperor Heraclius recovered the cross from the Persians. According to the story, the emperor intended to carry the cross back into Jerusalem himself, but was unable to move forward until he took off his imperial garb and became a barefoot pilgrim. Ref: Devotion of the Month for September OUR LADY OF SORROWS The Church dedicates the month of September to Our Lady of Sorrows. This devotion recalls the Blessed Virgin Mary s spiritual martyrdom in virtue of her perfect union with the Passion of Christ. This was her role in salvation history and what merited her place as the spiritual Mother of all Christians, symbolically depicted by a single sword or seven swords, piercing Mary's suffering heart, as foretold in Simeon's prophecy. Traditionally the Church meditates on the "Seven Sorrows" of our Blessed Mother: the prophecy of Simeon; the Holy Family's flight into Egypt; the loss of the Child Jesus for three days; the meeting of Mary and Jesus as he carried his cross; Jesus' crucifixion and death; Jesus' sacred body taken down from the cross; and Jesus' burial. The feast of Our Lady of Sorrows is September 15th. Mary most sorrowful, Mother of Christians, pray for us. Virgin most sorrowful, pray for us. Remembering September 11th A time for healing &forgiveness Tuesday marks 17 years since experiencing the twin towers at the World Trade Center fall, the Pentagon burst into flames and an airliner crash into a field in Pennsylvania. The scenes were both heartbreaking and horrific and, yet as terrible, sinful and evil as this attack was (or any attack like it), it is important that we keep in mind the words from Luke s Gospel: Stop judging, and you will not be judged. Stop condemning, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. - Luke 6:37 Sometimes, it s next to impossible to forgive someone, especially in those situations in which a horrible sin has been committed. God s entire relationship with us is based on love and mercy and forgiveness, God will go to the ends of the earth to seek and save the lost. People who can execute something as horrendous as a massive terror attack have lost their way, yet God loves them; He longs to bring them into His kingdom. He yearns for them to turn away from their sins and find the mercy that is open to everyone. Closer to home, we may be struggling to forgive someone who has hurt us. It could be a devastating wound or a minor snub. But no matter how much or how little it hurts, God asks us to do our best to forgive. TODAY, as we remember, let s imitate our heavenly Father. Let s make a list of the relationships in our life that may be wounded or broken, and ask Him for the grace to forgive and for the grace to take one step closer to mercy. Every step counts! Father, help me to let go of my hurts and my resentments. Help me to bring peace and reconciliation where there is hurt and division.
4 SCRIPTURAL REFLECTION September 09, 2018 Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him? (James 2:5) What is more important being rich in faith or rich in possessions? Society teaches us that possessions are most important. God teaches a different lesson. When we are rich in faith, we keep God first in all things and realize that material things really don t matter and that it s more important to share with those who have less.
