A Message From Fr. Tom Let s Celebrate Our Ministries One of the things I love to do as Pastor here at Holy Cross is celebrate the ministries in our parish. We have longstanding ministries, like our Catholic School and Faith Formation Program. We have new ministries, like the Holy Cross Pilgrimage and Christ Renews His Parish retreats. Parishioners are now stepping up in another new area, a great benefit for our community a group that we call The Holy Cross Heroes. It s a group of volunteer parishioners who gather every Tuesday morning after Mass to help around the parish. In the past, we always had good parishioners step up and do things when they saw a need, but it was never organized. This group gathers to fix things, clean things and work in an organized way. In the past four months, since they began, their small group has already worked over 170 hours. This goes to show that a group working together on a regular basis can do a lot of work. You may have noticed some of their projects. All of our bushes and trees have been trimmed and pruned, and they have worked on some landscaping. If you come into the church at the ramp entrance, I am sure you noticed they painted the railing, cleaned out the years of piled-up leaves and gave it a good cleaning. They even power-washed the carport entrance. They have also done some less visible projects. Using materials they found in our garages, they built shelving units for the garage and for the Oktoberfest space above the stage. At last, we can start to keep things organized! The Heroes cleaned all the cold air return vents in the church and school. You also may have noticed that many of the chairs are missing from the narthex (gathering space). 24 chairs were broken. Rather than paying $300 each for new chairs, the Heroes are fixing and re-upholstering them. This is saving us a lot of money! As I was talking to them today, they were about to paint the front door to the rectory which has needed paint since I came to the parish. I can t list all they ve done so far. I think it s so important to celebrate parishioners who share their time and talent. Not everyone wants to read at Mass or be on a committee. Some know how to fix things and want to share those talents. When I told them I was writing this article, I was told bluntly: Don t use names. We re not doing this for recognition. Some of the Heroes come every Tuesday. Some come every now and then. Others are on a list, so if we need help, the Heroes will call them. If you are available on Tuesday mornings, I would encourage you to come and help. With a few more hands, we could make our parish even more beautiful. Peace. Fr. Tom
