5 What is the meaning of Christmas? Our watching, waiting and wondering is almost over! What are we waiting for? When will it get here? And will we know when it happens? Even the Grinch wondered. He wondered how Christmas can happen, and happen, and happen, each and every year, no matter the circumstances. He had no answers, so he took matters into his own hands and decided to put a stop to Christmas once and for all. After 53 years, he finally realized: Imagine that; The Grinch, of all people, had it right! It came without ribbons! It came without Tags! It came without packages, boxes or bags! And he puzzled, till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn t before! Maybe Christmas doesn t come from a store. Maybe Christmas... perhaps.. means a little bit more? At this time of year those catchy signs saying Keep the Christ in Christmas and Jesus is the Reason for the Season are everywhere. Radio stations are in a rush to be the first to play Christmas music and I think the stores had their Christmas decorations up as soon as they took down the back-to-school displays. Everyone seems in a hurry for the party to happen. The need to buy and wrap presents, make all those yummy cookies, and start wearing the new red and green outfits overshadows everything else. Unfortunately, in the rush of buying, wrapping and baking the reason for the celebration often becomes an afterthought. As Catholics, we have just finished Advent (well, almost) which as we know is a time of watching and waiting. The 4 P s that were the central theme in Fr. Peter s Advent homilies: Prayer, Patience, Penance, and of course, Perseverance! Those along with Purple, and you have the perfect setting for Advent. However, in our world of instant gratification, we want the whole story; and we want it NOW! We know what we are waiting for, and we watch for it, for Him, in every person we meet, around every corner, and in every moment of our day. From the songs we sang at Mass, the liturgical color of purple, and the readings we heard, we have been reflecting, knowing that Advent is merely a foreshadowing of great things to come. In stark contrast to the tone of Advent, soon, the colors will change and flowers will make a re-appearance on the Altar! The contemplative purple will be replaced with pure, joyous white. We will once again say; and even sing The Gloria, bells and trumpets will be heard from the organ loft, and our watching and waiting will magically morph from anticipation to wonder, and ultimately to awe! Charles M. Schulz helped his character Linus show the gang the true meaning of Christmas. The Christmas Pagent that Charlie Brown and his gang performed came from humble beginnings as did our Lord. They were able to make something beautiful out of nothing, and I m sure we ve all heard or made reference to a Charlie Brown Christmas Tree. In the final scene in A Charlie Brown Christmas sums it all up perfectly when we see Linus standing on stage alone and we hear him say: For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord. [Luke 2:11-12].That s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown! Merry Christmas all!
