The leader of the group can start and after opening the minds and hearts of brothers and sisters as directed by the Holy Spirit, then other brothers and sisters will be given opportunity to share as directed by the Holy Spirit. We will follow this path whenever we meet for lectio divina; Reading a passage of scripture (Then together we will slowly reflect and share what the Word of God seems to communicate to us) After reception of God s word, we will dedicate time for silent meditation and contemplation We will follow the meditation with Intercessions We will end with Benediction Please join us on Monday evenings at 7:00pm beginning July 2.
5 LECTIO DIVINA UNDERSTANDING GOD S WORD AND PRAYING WITH IT Fr. Michael Boakye Yeboah Lectio divina is an ancient spiritual exercise promoted by the Benedictine monks around the 6 th century. Lectio divina literally means divine reading and is a method of prayer, study, and meditation. It can be described as the slow contemplative praying of scripture. Lectio divina approaches the study and prayer of scripture as something to be calmly and carefully absorbed and understood. The ultimate goal to this spiritual technique is to spend some time, physically and mentally, with God through His word. Lectio divina teaches us about the God who truly loves us. In lectio divina we dare to believe that our loving Father continues to extend His embrace to us today. And His embrace is real. In His word, we experience ourselves as personally loved by God; as the recipients of a word which He gives uniquely to each of us whenever we turn to Him in the Scriptures. Lectio divina teaches us about ourselves. In lectio divina we discover that there is no place in our hearts, no interior corner or closet that cannot be opened and offered to God. God teaches us in lectio divina what it means to be members of his Church. Though followers of St. Benedict have faithfully practiced Lectio Divina since the 6 th century, it has experienced a revival in the 20 th and 21 st centuries. Pope Paul VI with his document Dei Verbum and the establishment of the Second Vatican Council expressed the importance of this ancient practice in the 20 th century. Even more recently Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI restated the significance of the Lectio Divina in 2005, explaining that Lectio divina should therefore be increasingly encouraged [ ] It should never be forgotten that the Word of God is a lamp for our feet and a light for our path. Lectio divina is divided into different phases: reading/listening, meditation, prayer, and contemplation. The rhythm of the lectio divina is a gentle alteration between action and reception: reading the words and thereby entering a conversation with God. By focusing on a selected scripture, one waits and listens for God s voice. The individual practicing lectio divina is both listening to and speaking with God, united with Him via his words. Lectio is a prayerful process of reading the scriptures in the light of the Holy Spirit. When we prayerfully read the Word of God, the Holy Spirit will lead us to new understanding. The Word of God has this incarnation effect, where Jesus becomes present in the heart that receives His Word. Lectio helps us to develop an openness and receptivity to the Word of God in Scripture, as well as in nature and in events. It helps us to see God everywhere, and hear what God might be saying. We do lectio to align our hearts with the directives of God that come to us through His Word and the Word of God becomes the light for our path. Lectio divina is also among the important exercises, practiced in the atmosphere of silence. The Blessed Virgin Mary is a key example of the Spirituality of lectio divina. When the angel Gabriel brought the word of God to her, she accepted it though she couldn t understand the message. Her response I am the handmaid of the Lord, do unto me as you have said has been the mantra of Christian discipleship and devotion to the Word of God. Mary plays a key role in the mystery of incarnation: she accepted the word of God and allowed it to grow within her. Mary always pondered on the words of God silently and patiently and always allowed the will of the Lord be done in her life. If we are to practice Lectio divina well, then Mary should be our role model. The first step of Lectio Divina is Lectio, or reading. It is not ordinary reading, either as to matter or manner. To begin the exercise of lectio divina, we will try to put ourselves in a silent mode and after a short period of silence, we will say an opening prayer. We will continue with a slow reading of God s Word and in silence we dedicate time for the Word to rest in us. After a brief time, we will read the passage again. After the second reading, a time will be dedicated for pondering on the Word of God and asking the Holy Spirit to illumine our hearts and minds to hear what God instructs us in his Word. Continued on pg 4..
