KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS KINGSVILLE 8233 October County Rd. 20 P.O. Box 401, Kingsville, ON, N9Y 1G1 (519) Dear Brother Knights, A FEW WORDS FROM OUR CHAPLAIN As a longtime subscriber to Leaves from the Mariannhill Fathers, I recently read an article on the background to the Marian prayer, the Angelus. As we begin the month of October, dedicated to our Blessed Mother Mary, I thought I would share with you what Bro. John M. Samaha, S.M., has written. You no doubt will recall, when you were in Catholic grade school, the practice of praying the Angelus, specifically at noontime. The Angelus is a prayer practice rich in doctrine and devotion. It honours the Annunciation of the Lord and commemorates the mystery of the Incarnation: the Son of God becoming the Son of Mary for our salvation, the union of the divine nature with human nature. The Angelus takes its name from the first word in the Latin version of the prayer: Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariae. In praying the Angelus, we recall the dialog between the Archangel Gabriel and Mary by reciting three verses and responses with a Hail Mary after each set, another versicle and response, and then a concluding prayer. Traditionally, this was done while the local church bells tolled at 6 AM, 12 noon, and 6 PM. The Angelus traces its beginnings to the 13 th century. In that era bells were often inscribed with the Angelic Salutation. Although the origin of the Angelus is obscure, it is certain that the morning, midday, and evening practice of praying the Angelus did not develop simultaneously, but by the 16 th century the various customs were unified. The prayer was recited in the morning to commemorate Christ s resurrection, at noon His passion, and in the evening His Incarnation since St. Bonaventure taught that Gabriel s visit to Mary came in the evening. Since the 15 th century, the Angelus has been recommended by many popes. In our time St. John XXIII began to recite the Angelus each Sunday at noon as a Christian family prayer with the pilgrims and Romans gathered below his residence window in St. Peter s Square. This continues today. The renowned painting by Jean-Francois Millet entitled The Angelus depicts a young man and a young woman standing in a field. They are farmers. He holds his cap reverently as he stands with his head bowed. She, in a white cap and long blue apron over her dress, clasps her hands as a prayerful look sets her face. They pause in prayer near the end of the workday. This famous painting can probably be found in many of your homes, and if you are ever in Paris, France, you will find it in the Musée D Orsay, where it resides today.

Why not pray the Angelus sometime throughout the month of October in honour of Mary? V. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary. R. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. HAIL MARY V Behold the handmaid of the Lord. R. Be it done unto me according to thy word. HAIL MARY V. And the Word was made flesh. R. And dwelt among us. HAIL MARY V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection. Through the same Christ, our Lord. Amen

GRAND KNIGHT S REPORT Brothers, we are starting to become more active, but the need for your participation is still great. We have events being planned, but without new people stepping up, they will have to be cancelled; sadly, that is the truth. We need some Knights to help out with the meals at the church for the new Alpha Program, to coordinate volunteers preparing a light meal for 4 evenings. This is to help our church and strengthen our church community. We have a bottle drive for Special Olympics being chaired by Danny Dumont; he will need helpers. Our Deceased Members Memorial Service will take place at GreenHill Cemetery at 2:00PM on Sunday, October 14; it would be nice to see more Knights out, as last year there were only two of us. Finally, you can help with our Members Banquet on Nov. 10. As always, if you d like to help with any of the above, call me at (519) , text me or me at gkmarshall8233@gmail.com, or contact any member of our executive. Please help us help our council succeed. GK Marshall Worthy Brothers, DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT S REPORT As fall approaches, there are several events I would like to make you aware of: 1 Saturday, October 13 Bottle Drive for Special Olympics. Drop off your empty beer cans and bottles, and liquor and wine bottles to our Brothers right next door to the Beer Store. We will collect them and return them. All proceeds will go to the Special Olympics. Hot Dogs and Hamburgs will be sold as well. Please see Dan Dumont if you wish to help. TELL YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS TO SAVE THEIR EMPTIES FOR THIS DAY!!! 2 Sunday, October 14 Our Deceased Members Ceremony at GreenHill Cemetery. Time to be determined. Please come out and say a prayer for those Brothers who have passed and for those who have been left behind. 3 Saturday November 10 Our Members Banquet

Come to the Lakeside Park Pavilion in Kingsville on Saturday, November 10. Doors open at 5PM and dinner is served at 6PM: pasta, salad, buns, Colasanti's broasted chicken, and cake for dessert. Complimentary wine has been graciously donated by Oxley Estate Winery, and the cash bar will be at break-even prices! Cost of Tickets - ONLY $10 PER PERSON! ($5 for kids under 13) Help make this a night to remember! DGK Paul Johnson Paul.johnson@publicboard.ca (519) DISTRICT DEPUTY S REPORT Brothers, again I ask you all, where has the time gone? We will now be into council banquet season and before you know it, Christmas will be upon us - YES, I said Christmas! With Christmas comes the Keep Christ in Christmas initiative, and last year the new signs proved to be a big success; hopefully, we can outdo last year s efforts. I have asked each grand knight and financial secretary to obtain recruitment kits for their respective Councils. If there were any problems they were to inform me; I assume that all is well and that each Council has done so and is able to get a kit, because no one has called me. WE NEED THESE KITS IF WE WISH TO HOLD CHURCH DRIVES. I am also hoping that by now each grand knight has been able to secure a date for a church drive with his pastor. I had assigned dates for each parish and council. EACH COUNCIL NEEDS TO RECRUIT AND WE ALL NEED NEW MEMBERS THE SOONER, THE BETTER. As district deputy and captain of the 1 st degree team, I have scheduled degrees for September 18 (cancelled due to lack of candidates), October 18, November 20, December 18, and January 15. There are other dates, but we have conflicts and I am working on correcting these. The above dates will have admission and formation degrees and will be held in Kingsville. LET US TRY TO HAVE AT LEAST ONE CANDIDATE FROM EACH COUNCIL FOR EACH DATE. I am hoping that each council will be holding a new Coats for Kids program because with the new Faith in Action program, each council will be able to use two credits in the community section of the Columbian Award. As I have mentioned many times before, I have been and will be here for you if you have any problems. Remember that we have a chain of command; PLEASE do not by-pass me when

you have an issue because when questions are asked and I have not been involved, what am I to say? Finally, Diane and I would like to wish each and every one of you and your families a Happy Thanksgiving filled with family, faith and food. We ALL have so much to be thankful for! Vivat Jesus Dan Orawski, District Deputy District 21 FINANCIAL SECRETARY S REPORT Brothers: The monies have been deposited. The Fry Hut funds have been turned in from the flea market and festival of cars, thanks to Art Brunet. Membership cards for 2019 are in and signed by our Worthy Grand Knight Dues are $ If you have any questions, me at council8233fs@gmail.com, or phone me at Fraternally Bob Phaneuf, Financial Secretary A LITTLE HUMOUR The Grandmaisons were shown into the dentist's office, where Toni made it clear she was in a big hurry. "No fancy stuff, Doctor," she ordered. "No gas or needles or any of that stuff. Just pull the tooth and get it over with." "I wish more of my patients were as tough as you," said the dentist admiringly. "Now, which tooth is it? Toni turned to Lloyd: "Show him, Dear.

CHANCELLOR S REPORT Lord, this month, when we celebrate and give thanks for all the blessings we enjoy as a nation, we offer prayers for the souls in purgatory and ask the souls in heaven to intercede for us. We pray and offer sacrifice in reparation for our sins, the sins of those working in the church and those who would seek to do evil against us. We ask, dear Lord, for your mercy, grace, and forgiveness as we do our best to allow You to take the lead in our lives. Thank You for the Knights of Columbus organization that has drawn us together in this fraternity. May we never be too busy to lend a hand to those in need. Brothers, Please pray for these members of our council: LARRY HEIL, JOHN WARMENHOVEN, FR. RICK JANISSE, STAN BALAKOWSKI, RICHARD AMLIN, VERN RIEMER, ANTHONY REBKOWEC, and DANNY NELSON. Please also keep in your prayers members of our extended families. Steve Benson's mother PHYLLIS BENSON and his Father-in-law ALEX JACKSON continue their courageous battle against cancer, as do MICHAEL and ADALINO MEDIEROS. SAMANTHA STYCUK, my older brother JOHN BOUTROS, and my nephew KEVIN CAMPAGNA can all use our prayers. Especially pray for those whose names you do not see on this list, because they struggle just the same. And as always, if you know of a brother Knight or his family member who is sick, injured, or just needs our collective prayers, please pass it on to me or any executive member.
