2 The Church of Saint Pascal Baylon l 1757 Conway Street l Saint Paul, Minnesota Dear Friends: Recently I was reading a magazine and came across a full-page "paid editorial," which was an open letter signed by about twenty theologians and church leaders, only one of whom I recognized as Catholic (sadly). It acknowledged a growing tension between the gospel of Jesus Christ and the present exercise of political authority in our country. It began by asserting that "our identity in Christ precedes every other identity," specifically, "nationality, political party, race, ethnicity, gender, geography." It's the kind of prophetic announcement that we ought to be hearing a great deal more of from religious leaders and pastors these days. The heart of the letter was six statements of belief, accompanied by six rejections of what seems to be threatening our public life in the present moment. It made me want to cheer. I'd like to share here the six belief statements and paraphrase the rejection statements (for reasons of space in this column). "We believe each human being is made in God's image and likeness. Racial bigotry is a brutal denial of the image of God in some of the children of God." Here are rejected any activities or speech promoting nationalism, racism, or white supremacy, which must be named as "public sin." "We believe we are one body. In Christ there is to be no oppression based on race, gender, identity, or class." To be rejected here are abuse (sexual and otherwise), mistreatment of women or violent assault against other human beings. "We believe how we treat the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, the stranger, the sick, and the prisoner is how we treat Christ himself." Rejected under this heading are "the language and policies of political leaders who would debase and abandon the most vulnerable children of God," particularly refugees, immigrants, and the poorest citizens of our land. "We believe that truth is morally central to our personal and public lives. Jesus promises, 'You will know the truth and the truth will set you free (Jn. 8:32)'." Here to be rejected is the normalization of lying in our culture, calling this a "profound moral danger to the fabric of society." "We believe that Christ's way of leadership is servanthood, not domination. We support democracy, not because we believe in human perfection but because we do not." Here are rejected attempts at authoritarianism in political leadership. "We believe Jesus when he tells us to go into all nations making disciples. Our churches and our nations are part of an international community whose interests always surpass national boundaries. We in turn should love and serve the world and all its inhabitants rather than to seek first narrow nationalistic prerogatives." Here I will quote directly the rejection part because it is sensitive: "Therefore, we reject 'America first as a theological heresy for followers of Christ. While we share a patriotic love for our country, we reject xenophobic or ethnic nationalism that places one nation over others as a political goal." There is nothing in any of these belief statements that should sound shocking to readers of the bible or worshippers in Christian churches, and we say such things at liturgy all the time. So why do some of the rejection statements sound so jarring or disquieting? It can only be because of a certain disconnect between religion and daily life. That is deadly. And that is the point, I believe, of this letter. Especially at this time of our history, a faith that does not cause us to be unsettled about our public life is a faith that is simply too safe, and too incorrect. Thank God for the prophets among us. Fr. Mike Byron Social Justice and Caring Committee We Care Campaign June 2-3 This weekend, St. Pascal s parish will gather the loose change and bills from the collection and donate them to the three options chosen by the committee for its summer projects: Option 1: Holy Family Surgery Center at Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos Orphanage in Honduras This surgery center is spearheaded by Dr. Peter Daly, an orthopedic surgeon from Minnesota. The center provides same day surgical procedures for underprivileged patients who otherwise could not afford surgery. Option 2: Progressive Baptist Church Fishes and Loaves Food Shelf This food shelf is located within Progressive Baptist Church at 1501 Burns Avenue in St. Paul. It provides emergency food items to anybody in need. No residency or parish memberships are required. Option 3: The Listening House The Listening House is a St. Paul inner-city drop-in center that provides hospitality and practical assistance to disadvantaged, homeless and lonely people. We encourage you to consider making a personal contribution as well, using the envelope provided in the packet of envelopes sent by the parish every other month or found on the tables located by the doors leading into the church. If you prefer to give to one or more of these charities, please indicate this by marking the appropriate option(s) on the envelope and your contributions will be distributed as requested. Any unmarked contributions will be divided equally among the three options. Thank you for your generosity. Julian of Norwich A Message from Sharon Balcom Fr. Mike joins me as I welcome our newest staff member to St. Pascal s. As I move out of the full-time position of music and liturgy, I am so delighted we could find and hire Keri Mader as liturgist. Keri a former student of Fr. Mike's has a great love for the liturgy and brings with her a shared vision of the worshiping community. In other words, I believe she speaks the same language that St. Pascal's has cultivated for its entire history a history I have been privileged to share. In considering this position, Keri has worshiped with us on a few occasions, one of which was Holy Thursday. She expressed how moved she was by the prayer of the community that evening. I look forward to my part-time position as Pastoral Associate for Music and to working with Keri our offices are next door to each other! Sometime during June Keri will be introduced to all of you at our weekend liturgies. WELCOME KERI MADER!
